Apparently Milwaukee isn't all beer and Sausage Races. Eric Ellis, guitarist for Boston hardcore denizens Bury Your Dead, was held at gunpoint there after a show while being attacked with hammers by teens who were apparently being initiated into a gang. Ellis needed 18 staples to close a gash in his head, but the band is going to continue on with their tour. In a statement they said, "It will take more than this to......

It's a day that happens only in Boston, as far as we know. Maybe they do it in Milwaukee and Kansas City, but we doubt it; only Red Sox fans are maniacal enough to go out on a cold morning to watch some boxes be loaded in a truck. That's right, it's Truck Day - the day when the Sox equipment heads south for Fort Myers and Spring Training. It's the day when dozens of......

Roger Clemens is an unhappy man today. At least, his lawyer is. Attorney Rusty Hardin responded to Roger's prominence in the Mitchell Report by saying, "He is left with no meaningful way to combat what he strongly contends are false allegations." We remember something in the report about Mitchell requesting an interview with Clemens and being turned down. Perhaps that was a mistake. For Clemens and the rest of the names on the list, it's......

Summer had officially come to Fenwarts, but the mood was anything but cheery. Professor Schillbedore was still missing and presumed in rehab. Harry Potter still dreaded his potions class, but now wasn't pleased with Defense Against the Dark Arts, either. The new teacher, Professor Matsuzaka, started the term with much promise, but lately had struggled in class, unable to cast even a simple Chicagous spell to stop a pair of animated white socks. And Voldemort......

There's an old saying in baseball...well, there are a lot, like "Take two and hit to right", or "Don't bunt to break up a no-hitter", but there's an old theory that when you get lots of men on base, it's in your best interest to drive them in. A little crazy, to be sure, but it's a piece of wisdom that the Red Sox have been ignoring for some time. Not last night. The Sox......

The complete game is a dying art in the States. In the age of relief specialists, managers tied to pitch counts, and Papelbon, there aren't a lot of occasions when a manager wants to leave his starter in any longer than necessary. And last night, in fact, Papelbon was warming up when the Sox blew the game open in the 8th, taking a 7-1 lead and giving Terry Francona an excuse to leave Daisuke in......

Not much gets said about the restorative effects of a vacation to Canada, but the Red Sox' stay in Toronto has been nothing but beneficial. The Blue Jays are falling apart at the seams, and the Sox are more than happy to take advantage of their hospitality. Last night's 9-3 win was just the latest example. Daisuke Matsuzaka, who had won his last two decisions despite looking surprisingly average, was back in form last night,......

Things were looking bleak in Canada yesterday. Leonard Cohen bleak. Down 3-1 after seven innings, the Sox looked like the "feast or famine" roller coaster was about to take another big dip. Then Manny homered to tie it. He's finally off the schnide, and only one behind Miracle Mirabelli now. Then in the bottom of the eighth, Alex Cora survived a tough slide by the Jays' Lyle Overbay to turn a rally-killing double play. Cora,......

Adam at Universal Hub first brought this to our attention, then we heard it on WBZ in the car: it's a brilliant Gil Santos mashup in which he simultaneously announces the opening day games of all four of our local teams. That Zdeko Brady Matsuzaka is a hell of an athlete, leading the league in assists, RBIs, and completion percentage. The Red Sox joined the growing number of MLB teams who've had to cancel games......

-- Red Sox fans got their first real regular-season glimpse of their $147 million team on Wednesday night, as Boston handed Kansas City a 7-1 loss at Kauffman Stadium. Jason Varitek got his first hit of the regular season with a single in the fourth, JD Drew's stepping up, Kevin Youkilis hit the team's first home run in the seventh and Josh Beckett (five innings, two hits, five strikeouts, four walks) put in a decent......

There's two ways to handle a loss. Even if that loss is an utterly flat performance against an utterly forgettable K.C. team that made Gil Meche look like Christy Mathewson and Mark Grudzielanek look like Rogers Hornsby. The first way to approach it is, hey, it's only one game. Even the best teams in history lose more than fifty times a season. And Pedro lost Opening Day in 2004, and we know how that turned......

So, the Celtics have been drooling over Kevin Durant, but, if they play badly enough, they might have another juicy prospect option - Glen "Big Baby" Davis of LSU is foregoing his senior year to join the pros. "Big Baby" is big indeed and sends visions of Shaq dancing in coaches heads. Danny Ainge may have put himself under house arrest to make sure he doesn't get too close to Davis' mother. Danny Ainge also......

The Celtics had a chance to win last night. The Minnesota Timberwolves lost to the Memphis Grizzlies, for crying out loud. They could have taken this one. And they almost did, were it not for sloppy play in the last moments that put the ball in the hands of former Celtic Ricky Davis, who nailed a shot with 0.2 seconds left and helped the T-Wolves beat the Celtics 109 to 107, continuing the Celtics' 18-game......

In case you didn’t hear the big news last week: Boston has once again risen to the top of a Forbes list and we’re not too sure this one is a good thing. It seems that Boston was rated fourth nationwide in America’s Drunkest Cities 2006 poll. While Bostonist often rolls out of bed with a headache, questioning why we decided to have that last Grey Goose at 1:30a.m., we assumed we were just......
