The extreme heat warning was extended to 8 p.m. as it's still extremely hot out there. Logan Airport recorded a temperature of 103 degrees, matching the temperature from this date in 1926, the National Weather Service said. People who tried to beat the heat at beaches in Lynn, Nahant, and Revere Beach learned parts of all three were closed due to high bacteria levels. In another heat-related fiasco, passengers on a five-hour bus ride to New York had no air conditioning. To deal with the record-setting heat, Boston EMS workers walked the streets to assist anyone in distress. Remember to follow Bostonist on Twitter and like us on Facebook. more ›

Meet this week's special adoptee, Nubbins! (ID A220407) The first six days of January saw 82 animals being surrendered to the MSPCA Animal Care and Adoption Center: a huge spike! As a result, the MSPCA is currently caring for more than 200 homeless animals. One of the many now available for adoption is a very special kitten named Nubbins, so named for his quirky physicality: he was born without hind feet. Despite his impairment, Nubbins is a surprisingly playful kitten. He needs to be in a loving home that is fully carpeted (hardwood floors would do a number on those un-padded hind legs) and preferably without stairs. more ›

A rough economy and rainy summer have conspired to make it particularly difficult for many people to provide for their animals this year. The MSPCA received twice as many kittens as usual in August (more than 300), and the organization is currently hosting a record number of horses (59 surrendered so far this year) as well. Because of their size and status as livestock animals (despite how much people may try to make them “pets”), horses need more involved care than most animals, including space to roam, shelter, and feed that you can't get at the grocery store. As a result, there are far fewer eligible homes for horses in need than for kittens in crises. more ›

There is a pressing issue occupying "minds" on Beacon Hill: Jobs, taxes, budget cuts, infrastructure, healthcare, crime, global warming, killing zoo animals Dogs. Our elected officials want to create a dangerous dog database, or registry, that lists pooches with bad intentions and records of mischief. The MSPCA opposes the bill, sponsored by Stephen J. Buoniconti (D-West Springfield), which would post pictures of dogs and explain their reckless acts. The MSPCA wants to increase spaying and neutering of shelter dogs, training for animal control officers and define "dangerous dog" properly. The legislature is also considering a bill to allow cities and towns to ban specific breeds of canines. Certainly, caution should be exercised when dealing with any animal, even those that appear safe. However, the summer of 2009 presents us with a full plate of issues that push laws of this nature down on the list of priorities. more ›
