General John Allen, the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said the Taliban insurgents responsible for shooting down the military helicopter carrying 38 American and Afghan personnel on Saturday, and killing all of them, were tracked down and killed by the U.S. and NATO on Monday in an airstrike involving at least one F-16. Taliban leader Mullah Mohibullah and the insurgent who apparently fired the rocket-propelled grenade were killed. Former Barnstable High School graduate and Navy SEAL Kevin Houston was killed on that helicopter. A memorial service for Houston is scheduled for Thursday in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at the Atlantic Shores Baptist Church. more ›

Barnstable native Kevin Houston, 36, of Chesapeake, Virginia was one of the 30 Americans killed Saturday in Afghanistan when a military helicopter was shot down. Two sailors from New Hampshire are serving on the USS Carl Vinson, the aircraft carrier from which Osama bin Laden was buried at sea after he was killed in Pakistan. Greg Getchell and Stephen Getchell, both Salem High School graduates, enlisted in the Navy in 2005 and are spending a seven-month tour on the USS Carl Vinson. more ›

Navy SEALs shot down three Somali pirates to rescue Captain Richard Phillips, who had been held hostage since his boat, the Maersk Alabama, was attacked on Wednesday. Phillips gave himself up in return for his crew's safety. After an aborted escape attempt on Friday, the Navy was finally able to secure Phillips' safety. Phillips is being hailed as a hero, and rightly so, but the pirates still have control of more than 200 other hostages. Let's hope their safe return can be negotiated. more ›
