OK. The five-year-old kid delivering Herb Brooks' speech at Fenway, and telling a national audience "screw [the Yankees]". Great moment, or greatest moment ever? Discuss.
It's been a Fenway fixture for years, but rumors out of RedSoxLand indicate the days when "Sweet Caroline" pumps up Sox crowds in the eighth inning may be over.
We wondered for a bit whether the Brooklyn born Neil Diamond had a problem with the fact that "Sweet Caroline" now has a permanent place in the Boston scene. But when Diamond performed at Fenway Park last year, playing the song three times over the course of the evening, we figured that he'd finally accepted his honorary Bostonian status.
Each week Bostonist brings you the most viral of Boston-based videos. Ah... ahhhh... ahhhhhh...CHOOO!
Ever heard Eddie Vedder sing Neil Diamond? That alone is reason to check out Song Sung Blue, an alternately hilarious and heartwrenching documentary that screened at IFF Boston. The movie follows the ups and downs of a husband-and-wife Neil Diamond cover band called Lightning and Thunder. Vedder joined the "America's Singing Sweethearts" on stage at Milwaukee's Summerfest in 1995 for a rousing rendition of "Forever In Blue Jeans," a Diamond classic that Vedder needed a cheat sheet to sing. The performance was certainly a highlight of Lightning and Thunder's career, but there's much more to the duo than their on-stage personas. Song Sung Blue traces the pair's dramatic tale from the duo's beginning to the present, infusing the experience with plenty of Diamond tunes and some flashes back to the past.
Well, Bostonist was thinking Bon Jovi, but Fenway Park delivered something quite different, smooth crooner Neil Diamond.
Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline," the song near and dear to any Red Sox fan's heart, always sounded like a love song. Diamond certainly sang it like a love song, and it was easy to imagine a mystery Caroline who made Diamond's blood run hot. Imagine our surprise when Diamond revealed the inspiration behind his classic--an image of Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg. A very young Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg. Diamond said, "It was a picture of a little...
As it gets closer to Halloween for LAist, a contributer recollects her tale of staring down the serial killer, Richard Ramirez, otherwise known as the Night Stalker. Must think happy thoughts -- okay, free organic chocolate chip cookies for Los Angeles -- now that's a happy thought. Other happy Los Angeles thoughts include an interview with Jack Kehler of The Big Lebowski (he was the Dude's landlord), a beautiful and magical photographic moment in Venice...
There is a lot to love about the MBTA. Its mascot is a man who began a nightmarish lifelong captivity 'neath the streets of Boston when he tried to take the T to Jamaica Plain. It offers Bostonians spontaneous trust exercises. It grants importance to our geographically inclined citizens. And, let's face it, it gets us to work. But America's oldest subway is poised to become America's most annoying. The concept is T-Radio, and it...
The Red Sox are back in action. Fenway Park is only days away from the home opener (and scratch tickets) for the 2006 season. What’s it all mean? Time for some Neil Diamond. It’s the eighth inning and the music comes up, the crowd is engaged, Sweet Caroline comes back for a visit – each and every time. We’re not sure but we think that pretty soon this might take over as the song kids think of when they’re singing songs of Baseball. We know Neil Diamond is cool and we’re going to keep singing along each and every time we hear the song, especially on our next trip to Fenway.
Bostonist has been infatuated with China lately. It all started when baby Shanghaiist came into the family and started using a English vocabulary in a way that made us jealous. In July they took us on a trip to audio wonderland featuring the top 25 albums so far in ought-five. Today (even though they posted it today when today was still in our yesterday) Shanghaiist lays the beat down for the top 25 albums at the end of the year. Bostonist is pretty impressed and jealous once again. That bunch of ex-pats and natives has assembled a list we’ll file under “da shiznit 05” playlist. Well, that is if we had the funds to grab all those tunes, we’re sure they’re picking up CD’s with cover art and everything for under $2 a pop, Newbury Comics will sell you a Neil Diamond cassette for that price.
Touching me, touching youBostonist had a little fling with Neil Diamond this summer, but in her investigation Susan didn’t ask us. After interviewing fans, tour guides and the current Fenway DJ, Megan Kaiser, Bostonist was sure we’d heard the truth to the origins of the Sweet Caroline rendition at Fenway. Alas, we were wrong. The theories about JFK’s daughter, daughters of Fenway Park DJ’s past, and existential explanations the truth came from the originator. Amy, the Fenway DJ before Megan Kaiser took over, put on Sweet Caroline 8 years ago at a game. The crowd loved it. That's it, Amy liked it and Red Sox Nation just happen to like it too. Now Megan plays it every game, eighth inning, and all Bostonist can say is:
sweet Caroline, good times never seem so good (so good, so good, so good...)
A couple weeks ago Bostonist added a new feature to the site. We gave our readers a list of upcoming.org’s listings for the Boston and Cambridge area. We decided not to include Somerville and Watertown as the listings were, well, shall we say, not to hearty. We’ve been watching the content of the little include and notice today that the first of June marks a very special engagement. Apparently in Somerville’s Union Square Krasik will be feeding the pigeons at the benches. Bostonist likes upcoming because anyone can add events. If you're feeding the pigeons or planning a protest.
Enter Bostonist's new contest to win Neil Diamond concert tickets. The man of many classics is coming to the hub this summer on his world tour, and the countdown to the ticket sale is on. Each pair of tickets (good for a winner and guest)...
