Boston Blotter: Ultraviolence in New Bedford Leaves one Dead

-- What began as your run-of-the-mill New Bedford fistfight ended in a smashed truck and death. A fight broke out early Wednesday morning between James Donnelly and, 20 of New Bedford, and Michael Raposo, 26 of Dartmouth, outside of a New Bedford Chinese joint. Raposo allegedly attacked Donnelly with a crowbar during the altercation, which did little good against the presumably gifted pugilist, who absconded with Raposo's keys and his pickup truck. Not to be outdone, Raposo allegedly leaped into the back of the truck, crowbar flying, as Donnelly sped away. Raposo's crowbar attack proved to be a suicidally fatal distraction when Donnelly lost control of the pickup, which flipped over, throwing Raposo to the pavement and killing him.

The police report quotes Santiago as admitting that she and her four alleged accomplices planned to "rob Noons of all his drugs and his money," an interesting twist that might explain why the man had $18,000 in cash, but police have made no allegations that Noons possessed drugs. • -- An independent panel released a report today that accuses the Boston Police Department of shoddy police work, when it comes to policing itself. The panel ruled that five police misconduct cases out of 19 that it reviewed had been mishandled. Witnesses had been intimidated or ignored and leaps of logic had been used to clear cops in those cases, which the panel recommends be reexamined. The panel was formed after a 2004 incident in which a cop shot a college student to death outside of Fenway Park. The panel's findings validate some of the concerns of citizen groups who believe that police misconduct goes unpunished in Boston. [Globe]

Bostonist was at the New Bedford Summerfest this weekend, enjoying the refreshingly non-ironic sounds and earnest lyrics of several musicians who appeared to have actually studied their instruments as instruments rather than chick-getting-devices. There was also crowd participation, fried food, and an overwhelming array of nautical crafts for sale. We ended up being suckers for the glass whales and the blowfish. Scrimshaw was briefly considered, but judged both too expensive and too morally questionable. But the festival was about the music, not the accessories. Red Molly, Eileen Ivers, Lucy Kaplansky, Beaucoup Blue, Women in Docs, Mike and Ruthy, and The Kennedys put on some wonderful shows. More details and a photo gallery after the jump.

Police say they had stopped Craig on the suspicion that he had outstanding warrants. At some point during the chase, Craig aimed a pellet gun designed to look like a semi-automatic handgun at an officer, who shot Craig once, in the shoulder. Craig was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries and faces charges of unlawful possession with intent to distribute a Class B substance, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and being armed while wanted.
