Oh, it seems like just two years ago we mentioned Record Store Day before forgetting about it last year. And it was! Fortunately, we turned up the volume on our RSD reminder this year, its third anniversary, and can offer you both a link to locations in MA that offer free in-store performances on Record Store Day, which celebrates independent music stores. We can also offer a promise to cover our friends in RIBS as they play with Circa Survive and Riff Cannon tomorrow in Norwood. There's also a full list of performance at other Newbury stores; featured bands include the Morning Benders, Taxpayer, Dead Rabbits, and Miniature Tigers. Some of these we've heard of. Some we haven't. But that's the spirit of the independent record store: discovering new bands, sometimes even without Pitchfork preapproval. So head out to a record shop tomorrow and hit on (as in "find," not actually hit on, though you could do that too) a new musical crush. We think you'll be glad you did.

Boston, you did Kimya Dawson right on Thursday night. So right, in fact, that we can't even tell you about it.
Kimya Dawson has long been one of those buried indie-rock treasures, at least until the release of Juno. The former member of the Moldy Peaches and avid livejournal diarist contributes a large part of the soundtrack, and stars Ellen Page and Michael Cera cover one of her songs, "Anyone Else But You." In fact, Page suggested that Dawson be on the soundtrack since she felt Juno would be a Moldy Peaches fan.
While it might not seem possible judging from the creaky antics of bands like the Rolling Stones, there are some rock musicians who age well. Exhibit A would be Mission of Burma. Exhibit B would be Kristin Hersh, who will be performing at Newbury Comics on Newbury Street at 6:00 pm tonight. Hersh's new record, Learn to Sing Like a Star, out on Yep Roc, is the latest in her 20-year career. Hersh, along with...
In case you haven't heard the next week promises to show us the winter we've been missing out – only minus the snow. Cold temperatures (below freezing every day!) will be the rule according to the current outlook. Perfect time to head out to your favorite music venue. There's no better way we can think of to stay warm. This week you'll find the old, the new, the nerd, and some classical among the...
Even though yesterday was November 1, Halloween lasted an extra day on Newbury Street as teens and college kids gathered dressed as rap-icon-turned-reality-tv-star Flavor Flav. Flav, who is known for wearing Viking horns, outlandish shades, and a clock around his neck, was scheduled to visit Newbury Comics to sign autographs and promote his new solo record, Hollywood. These days, more people know Flav for his hot-tub shenanigans on VH1's Flavor of Love than for his...
Okay, like Bostonist, you’ve seen a few of the recent Boston performances by Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Radio 4, and/or !!!/Out Hud, and love most of the post-punk revival bands, right? (If not, we’ll forgive you for skipping over this post). And as for the early ‘80s groups whose angular, dance rock sound today’s bands are reviving (or sometimes merely deriving), well, damn, you can name check with the best of ‘em. Gang of Four,...
Bostonist has been infatuated with China lately. It all started when baby Shanghaiist came into the family and started using a English vocabulary in a way that made us jealous. In July they took us on a trip to audio wonderland featuring the top 25 albums so far in ought-five. Today (even though they posted it today when today was still in our yesterday) Shanghaiist lays the beat down for the top 25 albums at the end of the year. Bostonist is pretty impressed and jealous once again. That bunch of ex-pats and natives has assembled a list we’ll file under “da shiznit 05” playlist. Well, that is if we had the funds to grab all those tunes, we’re sure they’re picking up CD’s with cover art and everything for under $2 a pop, Newbury Comics will sell you a Neil Diamond cassette for that price.
Native Canadians The Dears are coming to Boston and will perform live at The Paradise on June 12, 2005. Bostonist wants you, dear reader, to get into the show free! Ok, you and a guest. A pair of passes will be awarded to the winner. Follow this link to enter.
Admittedly, Bostonist should tell you about tonight's Kathleen Edwards show at the Paradise. She's a Canadian variation of the venerable Lucinda Williams and she has a knack for writing hard-luck songs--Bostonist's personal favorite, "Westby", is a scathing Lolita track with a snotty chorus: "If you weren't so old I'd probably keep you/ If you weren't so old I'd tell my friends/ But I don't think your wife would like my friends." Catty! She's country,...
