Sports Redux: Brady Suits NFL

Fans of American Football in London won't see a textbook example of the sport when the New England Patriots play the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. If the game on display isn't something the league really wants on display - unless the NFL loves potentially one-sided games - then that leaves this year's London game as a means to promote the league through its stars. In other words, Tom Brady. That's what Mike Reiss theory is, and he believes Brady has embraced that theory, too. That would explain the sight of Brady in a suit surrounded by teammates in their casual team gear. It might explain more detailed, emphatic answers to media inquiries instead of the usual Belichick-speak we are treated to.

Sports Redux: Bite Size Edition

  • The early action in ALDS Game Three favors the Red Sox. A 5-1 lead thanks, in part, to Dustin Pedroia finally proving the Sox can score runs against the Angels. J.D Drew homered, too. Clay Buchholz leads Boston's potential last stand and needed 152 pitches to complete the first two innings versus the LAA.
  • The New England Patriots face another key test today against Josh McDaniels and the Denver Broncos. Denver is 4-0 thanks to a stout defense worthy of Belichick.
  • The Boston Bruins were thoroughly outplayed by the recently dreadful New York Islanders for most of Saturday's game, and looked headed for a third bad loss in four games. The Bruins ended with a memorable comeback featuring two Marc Savard scores, including the game-winner in a shoot-out.
  • No need to wory about a third straight ACC title game forBoston College as the Eagles lost to #5 Virginia Tech, 48-14.

The Globe reports that anonymous sources have said that Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo has a sprained medial collateral ligament, which he sustained during the first quarter of last night's game. He may miss as many as eight weeks, but one source said "that the timetable 'was not that bad.'" [Boston.com]

Ty Law is in touch with his inner Brett Favre. Law, who is a member of the Patriots 50th Anniversary Team and is in town to be honored as such at halftime of tonight’s game, talked to the Herald about playing again at 35-years old. He's been training in Florida, and says he'd gladly re-join the Patriots again. ”This is always the right team. This is home."

Pats Extra: Who Isn't Ready For Football?

With a day left before the New England Patriots suit up for real, Bostonist can't get enough news on the team. Two issues to focus on: Tom Brady is first and the new-look defense is second. Everyone knows by now that Brady spoke to ESPN and confirmed the baby news. He expressed complete confidence in his rebuilt knee in his chat with Chris Berman, and also dropped some Bill Belichick philosophy on us by saying he has to prove himself at every game and practice. "You got to earn it every week." That the video clip from ESPN includes a Dos Equis Most Interesting Man In The World ad is purely coincidental and not an endorsement of Brady as more interesting than the Dos Equis guy.

The New England Patriots traded defensive lineman Richard Seymour to the Raiders for a 2011 first-round draft choice. The Globe' Mike Reiss credited ESPN's Adam Schefter with the scoop. Is Bill Belichick up to something else? Signing Vince?

A Perfect Player: Bruschi Announces Retirement

Tedy Bruschi, the beloved New England Patriots linebacker who has served as the team's heart and backbone over the course of 13 seasons, announced his retirement from football during a Gillette Stadium press conference a short time ago.

Sports Redux: Byrd on Birds Action

The pitchers wing of the geriatric baseball hospital must have been unusually ebullient when the Sox shut out the Blue Jays, 7-0, yesterday afternoon. Paul Byrd, Billy Wagner, and Takashi Saito, ages 38, 38, and 39, respectively, gave a new meaning to the phrase "old-timer's day," combining for 8 innings of scoreless ball. (Spring chicken Manny Delcarmen pitched the seventh innning.)

Sports Redux: Brady Looks Sharp; Beckett, not so much

Two of Boston's best pro athletes were on display on Friday with mixed results. Preseason 2009 for the New England Patriots can be summed up in two words: Tom Brady. Is he ready to play after missing the entire 2008 season? Is he risking injury by playing too much in games that don't count? We'll get back to the injurry question.

Sports Redux: Found Their Legs

Tazawa's arm, Youk's bat keys to victory The day after a historically bad pitching performance overwhelmed a more-than-adequate offense, the Red Sox pitching and hitting came together for a rout of their own as they dominated the Yankees, 14-1, in an important win for the team.

Bite Size News, August 11: Eunice Kennedy Shriver Memorial Edition

The leading news story of the day is the death of Eunice Kennedy Shriver at the age of 88. Earlier today, Shriver's body was moved to the Kennedy's Hyannis Port compound where a family wake will take place. Funeral plans are not yet known. Reaction to her death and remembrances of her extraordinary life are continuing all day. Her brother, Senator Edward M. Kennedy, issued a touching statement in her honor, as did her son-in-law California Gov. Arnold Schwarzeneggerand Cardinal O'Malley. The JFK Library posted two condolence books today.

Sox-Less Sports Update

The Sox are in the Bronx and appear to be in a bit of turmoil. There is plenty of non-Sox news out there to occupy your mind. Glen "Big Baby" Davis is living down to his nickname. He is lingering in restricted free agent limbo and it's taking a toll on the amiable big guy. He dropped some mercenary lingo on WEEI on Monday. He actually told Jeff Goodman "I’m going wherever someone wants to pay for my services," which is realistic and, frankly, necessary in the 21st century NBA, but not something loyal Celtics fans want to hear.

Does Sarah Palin really have any significant impact on Boston? Fortunately, no. Governor Community Organizer/Private citizen Palin just quit as Alaska's leader after a rambling sharply focused public statement.

Sports Redux: Confidence Game For Buchholz

Clay Buchholz told NESN that he's in a game where confidence is key. He's got it now and has to keep it to be successful in the MLB. Buchholz solidified his self-confidence and the organization's confidence in him on Friday by pitching 5.2 innings and giving up just one run on four hits as the Red Sox beat the Blue Jays, 4-1. And now, he goes back to Pawtucket. So watch out all you AAA punks.

Bite Size News, July 17: Lost In Space Edition

  • With the 40th Anniversary of the first moonwalk looming on Monday, Museum of Science has an updated exhibit on display. Maybe that can explain how NASA taped over that footage? [Boston Globe]
  • The 35-year old father hit by a car on Wednesday in Brighton died last night at Mass. General. [Boston Herald]

Bite Size News, July 14: Millions and Millions Edition

  • Since 2002, Boston has been unable to collect $66 million in fines from parking tickets.[Boston Herald]
  • Massachusetts has lost a lot of millionaires - Who hasn't? - since 2008. We are still well ahead of Mississippi. We rock! [Boston Business Journal]

Sports Redux: Beckett, Ortiz Power Sox by Braves

When Josh Beckett stomped off the mound after the fourth inning, he sure looked mad about something. Perhaps Beckett was realizing that he is done pitching against Atlanta for the balance of the 2009 season. Beckett (9-3) stopped the Braves cold, again, this time with seven shutout innings, six hits and six strikeouts as the Red Sox beat the Braves, 8-2. Beckett pitched 16 scoreless innings against Atlanta this year. Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Paplebon closed the game out. Both were adequate, at best, as Paplebon served up a home run to someone named David Ross, who exists and played eight games for Boston in 2008.

Did Tom Make Another Baby?

Tom Brady owns two Super Bowl MVP trophies from the three Super Bowls won by the New England Patriots. Could he soon have as many children as he does Super Bowl MVP? The Internets have confirmed Gisele Bundchen may or may not possibly be slightly pregnant. Both the Boston Globe and Boston Herald credit something called RadarOnline.com with scooping, well, everyone on the conception.

Patriots News, Gossip and Rumors

Has everyone recovered from either or both of the humbling playoff losses inflicted upon us by the Bruins and Celtics? Well, if you have, or haven't, it's time to prepare for Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots.

The Patriots just won today's game against the Bills. According to the flowchart, that means that the AFC East is New England's... if the Jets beat the Dolphins today. Grab some markers and a green shirt, design a makeshift Brett Favre jersey, and stay tuned.

If Sox fans were looking for something to get out of bed for this morning, a pair of our other local teams were ready to provide plenty of reason to go on. Monday Night Football! Bruins home opener! Who needs a World Series?

BlackHole%20by%20NASA.jpgFangela has had quite enough news about the New England Patriots' linebacker Tom Brady's torn ACL from NPR during her morning and afternoon commute, thank you very much. And because WBUR's recent focus on "local programming" basically translates to "recycling the same news a whole lot," they'll make sure to update us every ten minutes on the lack of a change in status in the ACL tomorrow. That is, if the world still exists tomorrow.

Prior to last night’s game, the Red Sox were a game and a half behind the first place Devil Rays and a sweep would put the Red Sox back at the top of the division. In previous years, it was the Yankees the Sox were fighting for the top spot – the laundry might have changed, but the battle is still there. Last night, Jon Lester and the Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 3-0.

As if you didn't know already, Tom Brady was hurt early on in today's win over the Chiefs. It had nothing to do with the right ankle injury that kept him from playing in the preseason; instead, his left knee gave out after a hard hit from Brandon Pollard. Brady limped away and soon enough KC quarterback Brodie Croyle was injured too (right shoulder). Matt Cassel prevailed over Damon Huard int he battle of the backup QBs. More details in tomorrow morning's Sports Redux.

In one of the few chances he might ever have to make an interception, our golden boy Tom Brady has shown he may have a career as a linebacker. By selling three Back Bay condos he bought two years ago, Brady intercepted a cool $8 million--paltry in comparison to his salary, but big bucks to us little folks. The condos went to Andronico Luksic, vice chairman of Banco de Chile. Of course, Tom also spent a ton of money renovating the condos and recently paid $11 million for property in L.A., so that sort of negates the cash he earned from the condo sale. Brady's Manhattan apartment is on the market for a sensational $19 million, which might help fund the building of that Brady-Bundchen mansion in Los Angeles. We support Tom's real estate hobby, but hope he focuses on football this fall. At least a little bit.

The NFL season is set to open Thursday, September 4th, but for millions of people around the world, the season has already begun. We're talking about fantasy football, of course, and the beginning of the fantasy season begins with the draft. Talking to a fantasy football aficionado about the draft is like talking to a six-year-old about ice cream. Eyes light up. Palms start to sweat. It is the one moment in your season when you can control your own destiny, and your own insights can make or break your season. You can ridicule your friends in online drafting rooms, or hold a live draft party with full plates of food and plenty of Madden '09 on Xbox. But before engaging in your own fantasy football draft, there are a few things you should know.

New England Patriot offensive lineman Nicholas Kaczur was busted for buying oxycontin in April. On the spectrum of sports shenanigans, that's fairly minor. But what makes this story especially impressive is that Kaczur turned in his suppliers to the cops, and the news of the arrest just got out today.

The woman who filed a temporary restraining order against Randy Moss just before the Super Bowl dropped the order and asked for the case to be closed.

From satire by the Upright Citizens Brigade (see video above) to Bob Ryan to editorials in the Boston Globe magazine, the media appears to be wailing on Patriots coach Bill Belichick after Spygate and the Super Bowl loss.
