People Magazine is reporting that the former five hardest working kids in show business might just become the five hardest working middle-aged men in show biz. That's right - New Kids on the Block are reportedly planning to follow in Extreme's footsteps as the latest former Boston glory band returning to the spotlight.
Perhaps it's because people from Massachusetts are larger-than-life. This television season has more than a few ties to the upcoming crop of reality-show debuts. Here a few notables from the upcoming schedule: Tim Urban, from Newton, will be on The Apprentice and runs the risk of sleeping in a tent outdoors if he doesn't impress The Donald. He's a pianist, he runs a tutoring company, and he is a Harvard grad. The Globe profiled Urban...
Given that VH1 is kicking off a new season of "Celebreality," featuring ex-child star Danny Bonaduce running amok all over LA, we at Bostonist would like to check up on our own city's most famous boybanders to see if they have matured into responsible citizens.
New Edition and New Kids on the Block arrived on the scene about the same time as MTV, or after the music video station had already become engrained in pop culture. Other Boston bands had been around a lot longer than the music television station. Aerosmith found new success in a younger market when they released Get A Grip. It surged in radio play and with the wild popularity of the music videos. Crazy, Amazing, and Cryin, three videos made from singles off that album, starred Alicia Silverstone (before she was Clueless). They may have been the first set of videos that we remember being overplayed on MTV. But we haven't seen them for a while, until today. We'll wrap up this homage to twenty-five years of MTV by dropping Aerosmith's Amazing below. Be on the look out for the CD caddy used and when the screen flashes "cyberspace entered," young geeks at home wishing their VR set up was that, um, amazing. If you're in the mood for some ass-kicking Alicia watch Cryin. For hot schoolgirl Silverstone check out Crazy.
Today we continue on our video theme for the week, bringing videos out of the YouTube vault as our way of saying happy birthday to the new quarter-centenarian on the block, MTV. Yesterday was New Kids, today is New Edition. Choosing between a solo Bobby Brown and the entire Boston-bred crew of New Edition was actually more difficult than we thought. Bobby's got a certain presence we find hard to turn away from – since...
In celebration of 25 years of MTV we're digging around in the archives of music videos that we can find on YouTube. There are almost too many to choose from, so we've decided to go with the group synonymous with break out boy band and Boston. Back when they were still the New Kids on the Block (before the NKOTB refresh), Jonnie, Joey, Jordan, Donnie, and Danny made a musical breakthrough using a whistle in a pop song.
Let Bostonist assure you that no one can ever accuse The Streets of being a bad host. Last night The Streets played at the Avalon with Lady Sovereign opening, but it really felt more like a massive house party and Mike Skinner was the host with the most.
When we were a little Bostonist and would come to the city with our folks, we'd always beg them to let us stop in Tower Records on the corner of Newbury and Mass. Ave. We'd spend our sweet time among the cassettes before selecting something really good (most likely a classic album by the New Kids on the Block). Tower Records stayed strong and remained at that location until we came back from college in 2002 and realized that billionaire Richard Branson bought out the place and inserted a Virgin Megastore instead. Bostonist accepted it since it still sold music and after a trip to London on Virgin Airlines, we were a fan of the brand.
Nothing can ever go off without a twist of irony in this city, can it? It seems that there is some issue with the tree lighting ceremony scheduled for this Thursday night at the Boston Common. For the last 63 years, the city of Boston has lit a big Christmas tree in the city and for the last 34 years, the white spruce has been sent as a gift from our friends in Nova Scotia....
Bostonist recently came across two articles about those Bostonians we love to hate here in the Hub. From politicians to athletes to the handful of Hollywood stars, both lists give a good idea of who residents have heard enough about. Sure, we celebrate like no other city, but we bond best when joining in a group hatred for a Boston personality, don't we? After seeing the New York Press' "50 Most Loathsome New Yorkers" list,...
