Bostonist first came across Jodi Picoult’s book The Pact on a bus ride home from New York City; after four hours on the Greyhound, we were hooked on this tale of two teenagers with love, suicide, and suspense. So like most books we get our hands on, we read it, forget about it and start reading some other author. Picoult’s work came back to us recently when My Sister’s Keeper was selected as our monthly book club’s selection (yes, Bostonist is in a book club…okay we were in one.) This was another suspenseful story of two sisters, one who was conceived in hopes of keeping the other healthy as she fights leukemia. Although it sounds pretty heavy, Picoult is able to keep it lighter than one would expect and extremely realistic and dramatic ("a page turner" if you will). So when we read that Jodi Picoult is in town tonight to promote her latest novel, The Tenth Circle, we were excited for this reading. And like her previous works, this book sounds like another one that we’ll tear through. A man, who has a past of stealing, drinking, and anger, reinvents himself to become a caring father. Yet once he learns of his daughter being date raped, the old him starts to struggle with his new self.

After all the attention over James Frey’s “memoir” scandal last week, Bostonist was ready to throw in the towel and just concentrate on reality television. But then we started reading about some upcoming author events and remembered that we do in fact, like to read. So, in honor of finding the joy of reading again, we’ve decided to help you all get back on the book wagon again with a Bostonist contest.

There are quite a few author readings and events going on tonight around the city and there seems to be a bit of something for everyone. So why not Tivo that episode of "The O.C." (Bostonist knows it's one of your guilty pleasures) and introduce some literature into your night. If feminism, comedy, and just blatant, hilarious honesty, is your interest, head over to see Jill Soloway (pictured) in her "Tiny Ladies Extravaganza" at 8p.m....

If this description of a book doesn't intrigue you, you have to be dead: Rachel Dewoskin went to China to work for an American PR firm and ended up as a Chinese soap opera star. She was the sexy American vixen on Foreign Babes In Beijing, the subject of her new book. Please ignore the very Sex and The City-aping cover; Columbia grad Ms. Dewoskin is an assistant poetry editor for BU's literary magazine AGNI and a writer, and the book's going to be interesting, funny, and sociological! Come see her read tonight at 7PM at the BU Bookstore below the Citgo sign. If your tastes lean more towards ye olde Victorian novels of intrigue and ambiguous sexuality, have tons of fun with songwriter Wesley Stace, nee John Wesley Harding, a British hottie of sound mind and song who's written a well reviewed first novel, Misfortune. You can drink with him at 7PM at Newtonville Books' venerable Books and Brew series, and hey, if you get him talking, maybe there'll be singing too! Get your knowledge on and meet some attractive writers. (Bostonist feels the need to mention that fact if it will get you out of the house!)
