The days are getting longer. The nights are getting shorter. Layers of clothing are slowly coming off and you're getting thirsty.

In the past, Bostonist has risen to the defense of Boston drivers - perhaps more out of regional chauvinism than reason, but still - and we tend to think that their selfishness is actually a good thing, because it makes them, if nothing else, hyper-alert for a chance to get ahead. But last night, we witnessed the downside of automotive self-interest, in a classic example of what philosophers call the Collective Action Problem - everyone was trying to get ahead, and everyone ended up getting screwed. It made us shake our head at how dumb people can be, and our only hope is that some of the people doing this dumb thing on Route 3 last night will read this post and change their foolish ways.
We first came across the phenomenon of decorated fiberglass city cows on a trip out to Chicago in 1999. That year, over 300 cow statues were placed all around the city to bring delight to tourists and locals alike. After displaying them for the summer, the cows were then taken away and only to be seen again in miniature form in gift shops. The first cow parade was in Zurich in 1998 and the cow craze has been featured all over the world, including New Zealand, Belgium, South Africa, and now Boston starting this week. CowParade Boston kicked off this morning with over 100 cows being placed throughout the city. Through September 5, happy tourists together with jaded Bostonians can enjoy the quirky bovines all summer. Once the exhibition ends, 50 cows will be auctioned off at the Marriott Copley Place on September 21, with the rest of the cows then being herded and sold online. All proceeds from the CowParade Boston will go to the Jimmy Fund.
The first series of the season is in the books and the Red Sox are on their way to Baltimore with a 2-1 record after last night's 2-1 victory over the Texas Rangers. Of the last two games there were only a few bright spots to showcase, Jonathan Papelbon's performance being one, Josh Becket's being another. Monday's game was an all-around impressive display of offense - Mike Lowell's bat is slow...what? - and pitching. Thank the baseball gods that the Curt Schilling is pitching like Curt Schilling. We missed you last year, big guy.
