The name of the heroic MBTA operator who stopped a train in time to save a woman's life on the Orange Line this weekend has been released. Charice Lewis, we thank you for your quick response in this scary situation, and wish all MBTA operators were so attentive. A word of appreciation also goes out to the bystanders at North Station who brought the fallen woman to Lewis's attention. In the future, we hope that all MBTA operators, staff, and passengers will remember these upstanding individuals as model citizens and follow their lead in looking out for others in all situations, not just the most dire.

     

The Orange Line operator and inspector who managed to stop an Orange Line train just inches away from killing a passenger who had fallen on the tracks were honored today at the MBTA board meeting. The operator, whose name was not released, had been hospitalized for stress following the incident, according to the Herald, but has reportedly returned to work.

Last night, leaving the Celtics game, we saw a woman come an inch away from death. It was on the inbound Orange Line platform at North Station. We had missed a train and had to wait an interminable 15 minutes before the next train arrived, so we were relieved when the Worflike voice of the T announced "The next Orange Line train to Forest Hills is now approaching." The lights of the oncoming train shined through the tunnel.

Simple has become the theme this week quite by accident but today's photo continues in the genre with North Station by sw_awesometown. This shot has both symmetry and conflict. The silver columns, escalators, and overhead sign all add to the feeling of equality of the two sides in the photo. But the left side is composed of orange and black and a darker background while the right side is green and white with a light background, all of which contributes to a well capture photo.

Turns out Green Line service is down between Government Center and Lechmere. Here's the T Alert that was sent out:

Something wicked, wicked gross has been going on at North Station for the past week: every time a Green or Orange Line car heads into the station, the little people on the platforms are blasted with a powerful, cold gust of pure stink.

According the MBTA inspector we stalked into the Dunkin' Donuts at Haymarket Station, the Orange Line was shut down from Back Bay to North Station all morning because "a car tipped over at Chinatown." Maybe it's the Michael Jackson soundtrack, maybe it's the break-dancing, but there's something about this video that urges for the uncovering of some acid wash jeans and a red leather jacket to come out of the back of the closet. North Station might be new and clean(er than other stations) but it still isn't the type of place to go dragging your body all over the floor. If this were a full on subway dancing competition, or sometime in the eighties anyway, someone would have pulled out a flattened cardboard box "dance floor" and a boombox. The eighties may be full on in the past, but it's good to know that impromptu break-dancing still happens in the subway. The judgment seems biased in the eyes of the videographer/producer – though he well executed Worm does deserve bonus points. Remember using words like spic and chino isn't good for anyone.

Perhaps not a huge fan of Clay, Bostonist is a fan of the contest. We, and we think you, like free stuff and that feeling of being special. We were reminded today of the Bon Jovi show that we gave away a pair of tickets to back in mid-October (congrats Pyng, enjoy the show!). The concert sold out for the Garden pretty quickly, but looking out the window today we think there may be a few no shows and some scalpers with tickets discarded by North Shore Bon Jovi fans who will make the wise decision not to make it into the city for the show. The rain has stopped beating down on the window outside work, but that doesn’t mean you’re safe. Weather reports still have Bostonist on our toes. Not just the weather reports mind you, also those enormous puddles that have been cropping up all over the city today. With a last chance look at the MBTA website before figuring out the best way to embark on the commute it’s probably going to be the commuter boat service they’ve added today in Porter Square. Sarcasm aside, check your route home. Reports of street closures and temporary rerouting have been coming in since the first trip to the water cooler this morning well into the afternoon.
