Music Tuesday: Bostonist Music Picks for the Week

Tonight Of Montreal will freak out at the Paradise. Tickets are sold out, but it's definitely worth scalping/selling limbs on the black market for. Reports from last night’s show compare the festivities to ingesting mass amounts of elicit drugs. 7 PM, SOLD OUT, 18+

Bostonist would like to congratulate Heather for winning our contest for two free tickets to the Revenge of the Book Eaters show at the Berklee Performance Center.

Revenge of the Book Eaters will take place on Wednesday, September 26th, at the Berklee Performance Center. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. For ticket info, visit 826 Boston's website.

This week has seen finally-blooming trees, an uncharacteristically shining sun, and Bostonians emerging from their long grey coats—just in time for some jaunty indiepop. With some help from the kindly gaylords at Total Gaylord Records, the Student Council is bringing sixteen bands' worth of twee to town for the first (Bostonist hope it's "first annual") Cream of the Pop festival, commencing this evening and continuing through Saturday.

After the total lunar eclipse spiced up the night sky this past weekend we've got enough of the visuals. This week we're committed not to go see live music but to go hear live music. This week we're welcoming a few new contributors to the list, have a listen, will ya? Monday 3/5 Badly Drawn Boy It's okay to admit to liking British singer-songwriter Damon Gough, aka Badly Drawn Boy. He may write lyrics...

LAist tracks an award-winning TV writer who worked on Good Times to a homeless shelter and sees a Little Old Lady get a jaywalking ticket because she can't get across fast enough (in the same post!). Poets invade Metro and an LAist contributor's new book asks WWJB.

Don't forget Saturday is the Bostonist Anniversary Party at the Kinsale. In the interim please feel free to rev yourselves up with some of the great music rolling down the pike. Monday 3/20: Editors Neo-post-punk brits Editors (a la Joy Division & Bloc Party) with appropriately asterisked Stellastarr*. Roxy. Editors: Myspace | All Sparks.ram | purchase Tuesday 3/21: The English Beat, Westbound Train, The Sterns, and DJ Ford E. Buxworth More than just a...

SFist hit on Of Montreal’s aesthetic nicely when they interviewed Kevin Barnes back in January, as the singer acknowledged part of his band’s appeal: “we’re naturally inclined to let the freak flag fly.” This penchant for flamboyant originality materialized itself on Oscar night, as Kevin appeared onstage in full-bridal regalia, marrying himself to the sold-out crowd. And it never let up, as the 5-piece OM went off on a drum-themed tangent enlisting help from (excellent opener) The M’s Josh Chicione, played up “The Final Countdown,” and made decreasingly sensible costume changes. (Kevin opted for a gold lamé shirt with huge shoulder pads and then a vinyl slicker despite rising Middle East Downstairs temperatures.)

Lent, what a time to give something up. Over here at Bostonist Headquarters we're thinking hard what we're going to drop come Wednesday. It won't be our MP3 player and it won't be live music. Maybe with this, week four of the now weekly music pick running on Monday we're going to be able to give up our lack of coverage of the local music scene. With fingers crossed we're raising a pint to forty days and forty nights with local music somewhere on the agenda.

Kevin Barnes has taken his band, Of Montreal, on a quest of original expression through rock music, provoking individuality in all who stand in his path and show up to music clubs around the world. Of Montreal’s last tour, in support of Bostonist 2005 fave The Sunlandic Twins, brought Barnes and company through Cambridge twice last year. These shows were so successful, Of Montreal return to the Middle East on March 5. Bostonist caught up with Kevin by phone shortly after the band kicked off the latest leg of a tour marked by hysteria, harmonies, and plenty of dancing.

If it weren’t for the type of constant touring that makes cities seem like a blur upon memory, Dr. Dog would probably have as much to say about Mark Sandman Square as many of the scenesters grabbing slices at HiFi. This corner of Brookline St and Mass. Ave in Cambridge’s Central Square has become an epicenter for hipsters, artists, belly dancers, and touring bands thanks to The Middle East and TT the Bear’s Place. In...

We live in an iTunes nation. It's easy to pull a track down to your pod for under a buck. Bostonist still longs for cover art, liner notes, and that masterwork that is a multi-track collection of songs we call an album. Listed here is our much discussed, unbiased by payola, top 25 albums of 2005. After the jump you'll find where some of us stand individually on the subject of the years best. (Apparently...

Bostonist fully plans to go out tonight after the new episode of Veronica Mars at 9PM on UPN. After meeting the cast on Friday, naturally, Bostonist is convinced of their beauty and purity and is happy to support them by watching the show. However, there are plenty of options tonight music-wise, and you could run around the whole city trying to take in the culture. Let's start of the Boston side of the river....
