Back in March, when we first discovered that the Roomba robot vacuum was hackable we thought it was clever watching an animatronic monkey head roam the floor atop the device. We had no vision and forethought about what could come from hacking the iRobot (the Burlington based corporation making cleaning tools and sniper robots) vacuum. We're sad to report that this wasn't a contest held at some MIT performance center but rather on the other coast – in San Francisco. On May 9th Nerd Salon held a Roomba cockfight. Geek Entertainment Television was on hand and brings a video report to the masses. Can't sit through five minutes of a vacuum cockfight? Just want pictures? Flickr plays host to a whole set – which is part of the larger group all tagged with RoombaCockfight.

Back in January Bostonist was watching a story about four Chinese Nationals that were reportedly headed for Boston. The sky seemed to be falling and the terror threat level was on the verge of breaching orange. There had been reports of people wondering the city with Geiger counters making Bostonians feel as though there may be some kind of nuclear threat they weren’t telling us about. Mitt Romney even flew back from DC, missing out on the pomp and circumstance of the second inaugural celebrations. On May 12 the mystery of the chatter seems to have been revealed with the sentencing of Christian Delgado Gomez. In a story coming to Bostonist from San Antonio the four undocumented Chinese Nationals may have been those on board a Cessna piloted by Gomez. Gomez was arrested on January 24 and pled guilty a month later to one count of transporting an illegal immigrant, an additional three counts were dropped for his plea. He was sentenced to six months in jail and a $500 fine.

In his 12 years of service to the people of Boston, Mayor Tom Menino has made technological advancement a cornerstone of his administration. Under his leadership Boston became the first U.S. city to completely wire every public classroom, and was one of the first to introduce free internet access in public libraries. On May 19th, Menino and City Councilor John Tobin are leading a public summit to:

Bostonist spent all our money this weekend when we hit the newish Cold Stone store at the Fenway AMC and then caught a "The Interpreter" for an evening show. Incidentally, the ice cream was much more satisfying. Today a press release hit the wire announcing the increasingly ubiquitous gourmet ice cream chain’s plans for expansion. What grabbed our attention was not that they were going to be adding stores in and around Boson, not that there were going to be 40 more opened in Massachusetts within five years, but that we could own one of our very own. Then we'd get all the free ice cream we wanted.

The month of May marks the kickoff of "Boston 375," the name for the four-month long celebration in the city to celebrate its 375th birthday in 2005. Mayor Menino has decided that numerous events over the course of the summer will truly get Bostonians excited about it. While the final itinerary has not been distributed yet, the city does have some things on the agenda so far.
