Books Author Jami Attenberg, whom Bostonist had the pleasure of interviewing recently, is breaking out the big guns for her reading of her latest novel, The Kept Man. Kickass Cupcakes will provide food, and Ryan Walsh of Hallelujah the Hills will bring music. And it's free! Brookline Booksmith, 7:00 pm. Hot Dates SpeedDate.com is holding an online event tonight. Speed dating helped get a lot of dating crap out of the way, and it's even......

A year ago, this particular Bostonist tore into Hot Stove, Cool Music with a ferocity most often seen perhaps in rabid dogs. An event billed as top-notch synergy between Boston's sports and music circles left us wondering if we'd missed the tabletop covered with Kool-Aid in Dixie cups, because we viewed the night as a musical an uninspired, over-hyped musical event. We refuse to believe that we've mellowed in a mere year's time, but it's......

Google Street View has been available in several cities but has now made its debut in Boston, according to the Globe. The process allows you to take a 360 view of an address. If you want to use it, just go to Google Maps, type in a Boston address, and click on the little yellow man that pops up at the address. A new window will appear with a street-level image of the area. You......

Tim Blane Gregory Douglass Paradise Lounge Tonight, 9 p.m. doors, 18+, $10 MySpace Boston singer-songwriter Tim Blane isn't just the kind of musician who goes out of his way to talk about his music, he's the kind who will take a phone call when he's enjoying a day off in Florida - on his birthday. He won't mention this to a caller until the interview is already underway and laughs when the secret is revealed.......

Julian Velard with Jordan Carp Paradise Lounge Tonight, 7 p.m. 18+, $10 website The baseball fates are smiling upon Julian Velard today. The New York-based singer-songwriter told Bostonist recently that he was looking forward to performing in Boston tonight, with a show at the Paradise Lounge that serves as a brief escape to live performance during an intensely busy recording process. But Velard knew that trying to compete against the Red Sox in Boston is......

Paris is in jail, the Red Sox are on their way to California, Mitt is still running for president, but we're bringing it back to the clubs. Well, the clubs and urban outfitters. Some folks that seem like they've been around forever (dinosaur jr.) and those who legitimately have been around forever (Lee "scratch" Perry) come and visit the nontraditional and traditional venues, respectively, as part of this weeks music picks. Tuesday 6/5 The......

He started snapping photos of religious icons while taking his son out for walks in the stroller near their Somerville home. Josh Michtom, an amateur photographer, public defender, and one of Bostonist's own, found the project to be addictive. His iconography of Somerville's Madonna statues (and other religious lawn ornaments) expanded his set of images into a 234 image set on Flickr, and last November the Somerville Madonna shop was born on the Internet. Note......

After a weekend of rain where all we heard was disgruntled Bostonians complaining, because that's what we do best, about the weather we rock into the week. Miraculously the Red Sox managed to play all their games this past weekend making us furiously check the forecast for WBOS' 14th annual EarthFest coming up this weekend. For us it marks the first of many outdoor events that will happen this summer, and it's Memorial Day......

As the saying goes April showers bring May flowers. We're willing to subscribe with that theory. April looks to be a bit soggy for us in the beginning, especially considering the current seven day forecast. That means that frolicking in the outdoors will be limited and heading into the haven of the local rock haunts will be plentiful. Lucky this week provides a host of great shows around the Boston area. Included this week......

Berklee and Essence have teamed up again this year to bring the best young talent out to compete in the Hip Hop Songwriting Contest. If you are, or know, an eligible teen (unsigned and between 15 and 18) the time is nigh. Deadline for submission is March 9. It's all for a good cause, helping to balance the message in hip hop music and giving young songwriters a stage and training, not to mention......

All of a sudden we've got winter. The bonus prize is that it came late enough that when we leave work at 5 o'clock there's still natural light – soon enough it will still be light when we reemerge from the commute home underground on the T. Until the next few weeks pass and we can taste the summer concert and festival season in the spring air we'll continue to keep jamming through the......

Exploit Boston has toyed with the format of Game Night they began collecting games to play. It was in Ball Square for a little while, The Paradise Lounge on occasion, then camped out at Common Ground in Allston for a while. But the Common Ground just didn't seem to be the right fit for Game Night. So Sooz ventured out down Harvard Ave and found a new soul for the more-or-less monthly get together. Tonight......

IPO might still elicit thoughts of Initial Public Offering for many around Boston. This week it stands for International Pop Overthrow. About a thousand bands each take stage for a short set at the Paradise Lounge before the next act gets up. Ok, so it's not a thousand, but there are at least 40. The festival kicks off on Wednesday with Bostonist favs Anuska Pop and play all week. Each show is $10 and......

Why ramble? We've got shows to get out and see. We could put up a whole narrative about the state we were left in after NEMO and BeanTown Jazz swept through this weekend. But not now. They've been with Warner Bros. for what seems......

Fall seems to have set in, at least for now. the temperatures are dropping and people all over the metro have been forced to put their flip-flops away for some more sensible footwear. At least until it gets warm again in another week. Or so we hope. Music abounds again this week and we're listening. Tomorrow night, July 11, is the Exploit Boston Game Night at Common Ground in Allston. The evening has grown from it's humble beginnings at True Ground in Somerville to a still modest collection at the Paradise Lounge to the current incarnation of nearly 40 games to choose from at Common Ground in Allston. From 7 to 11 pm the cardboard lids will be removed, childhood memories relived, and good wholesome fun (and beer) will......

Time to hit the gym. Time to work off the 19 hot dogs and 12 hamburgers ingested over the last four days. Well, maybe the gym isn't going to do it. We'll call it hit or miss. Some weeks are totally on and our agenda's are filled to the brim with great stuff. Lent, what a time to give something up. Over here at Bostonist Headquarters we're thinking hard what we're going to drop come Wednesday. It won't be our MP3 player and it won't be live music. Forecast is for sun to out during the day most days this week. The temperature may be dipping a bit. Clear skies in February usually mean cold nights. Bostonist will be keeping warm with other music fans at some great shows this week. Phil (the groundhog) may have seen his shadow, making for 6 more weeks of winter, but these six weeks should sizzle with sound. More good shows coming up from now through March.......

After justified criticism that Bostonist hasn’t been paying enough attention to local bands we’re looking fondly at the Exploit Boston concert tonight. It’s the first event they’ve been sole sponsor and it’s brimming full of local act goodness. There’ll be time enough to get surly playing your favorite State of the Union drinking game and still make it to the headliner. Only problem with that plan is you’ll miss out on the free drinks. Yep,......

Bostonist’s little cousin unwrapped his toys on Christmas morning. We watched; longing for the days when it was socially acceptable for us to drop marbles onto a structure we’d put together, watching them twist, turn, and spin some wheels before plunking into a cup at the bottom. Sooz and the ExploitBoston team have made it socially acceptable again. Pairing alcohol with board games makes it both acceptable to play and reduces motor skills just enough......

This week Boston University announced that their Center for Digital Imaging Arts will now offer a 9 month (two semesters) program to receive a Certificate in Recording Arts. It will take a little more than completion of the program to become the next big producer. A little more like a stack of cash. But the Boston University program will offer a certificate to those completing the training in music, audio, and video production techniques. Bostonist......
