Paul posted a detailed description of his experiences as one of the evacuees during last night's Longfellow Bridge Fire, which shut down the bridge, the MBTA Red Line, Charles-MGH station, and Storrow Drive. By the way, Red Line service is back up now. Here's what Paul had to say (paragraph breaks and boldface emphasis are ours): I was one of the evacuees on the outbound red line train entering Charles/MGH on May 1st. It's difficult... more ›

After the total lunar eclipse spiced up the night sky this past weekend we've got enough of the visuals. This week we're committed not to go see live music but to go hear live music. This week we're welcoming a few new contributors to the list, have a listen, will ya? Monday 3/5 Badly Drawn Boy It's okay to admit to liking British singer-songwriter Damon Gough, aka Badly Drawn Boy. He may write lyrics... more ›

Governor Romney, only weeks away from being a lame duck, announced that the MBTA would resume random bag searches of transit system passengers. We thought at first they'd be riffling through our bags trying to find any tokens we still have in our possession, though really they are indeed looking for bombs. The announced plan will deploy portable machines outside of stations that will test baggage for bomb residue, and, with probable cause, police can... more ›

The last helping of gefilte fish and horseradish has been consumed; three boxes of Peeps lay empty on the floor; by the time the alarm goes off tomorrow morning a battle will have been reenacted on the Lexington green – So we’re thinking about tomorrow and where we’ll be. We know that not everyone enjoys the benefits of a state holiday so some folks will actually be working as thousands travel the 26.2 from Hopkinton to Boston. We know, from experience, that Marathon Monday can be a good use of a vacation day. How will Bostonist watch the marathon? Read on… more ›

Ok, so it’s not exactly viral video, but it’s worth a watch. There’s a big chunk of the middle of this video that might exclude it from a top-notch rating, but Bostonist is still digging a different take on a view we see everyday. Self-described as an experiment in people-watching on the T, the video departs from Park St. It’s mostly Red Line but there’s also a glimpse of the Green Line mess upstairs for a minute. The editing highlights focal points Bostonist usually misses, accompanied by a buckster soundtrack. Way to go, Joe. more ›

These days everyone seems to be mapping this or that with their new found geek tool: Google maps. Bostonist has been fascinated with the Google Map mash-up since we saw them go live. They’ve done everything from mapping the T onto surface streets, telling us about our local sex offender, and brought that fleeting thing called memory maps when Flickr met Google (maybe they frown on it now that Flickr is Yahoo’s). Recently Bostonist stumbled upon a map mash-up that combines a bunch of mashes onto whichever map you prefer, Yahoo, MSN, or the wicked Google format. more ›

One last reminder for those people who can't remember what they had for dinner last night, nevermind something like a Happy Hour announced last week. more ›

Start off the upcoming holiday weekend early on Thursday night at the first (of many, hopefully) Bostonist Happy Hour at the Beantown Pub. Put it in your Blackberry so you won't forget (or just write it on your good ol' desk calendar like the technologically savvy Bostonist). We hope to see you all there! more ›

Now that summer is officially here, Bostonist has decided to celebrate with a beer. We'd like to invite you out there to join us for a few drinks at the very first Bostonist Happy Hour next week. Stop by and say hello, give us feedback/ideas, and of course inform us of the grammatical errors you've come across on the site during our first few months. We might have to call into work sick Friday if you come out and give us good reason. We hope you will come out and kick off the Independence Day weekend right, on Thursday! more ›
