Cupcake Camp Boston is not a camp, as far as we can tell, so don't bring your sleeping bag or mosquito repellent, and check your hopes for lanyard-making at the door. It's not technically in Boston, either, so that's two strikes for inaccuracy right there. But Cupcake Camp Boston does offer the opportunity to sample cupcakes from some of the Boston area's most delectable bakeries free of charge, so we'll cut the event a little slack. more ›

If prancing around 19th century style isn't your thing, maybe rocking out is. Tonight is the Johnny Cash Tribute night at PA's Lounge in Somerville's Union Square, featuring 10 bands interpreting the master's tunes. It's been six and a half years since Cash died, but his songs still resonate with many, for both musical and emotional qualities. If you're at all a fan, tonight's diverse performances will be worth checking out. Participating bands have sounds that range from droney buzz to rollicking Americana to all-out rock, promising a multifaceted experience. The show celebrates the opening of a Johnny Cash—themed exhibit at the Nave Gallery. more ›

Bostonist had the good fortune to see Canadian blues/rock duo the Pack AD live at PA's Lounge last Wednesday. We were so floored by the experience that a) we missed our bus home to catch the last song and b) it took us a while to write about the show, but we've recovered now and are ready to relate—if we can. more ›

Bostonist had a sudden urge to saunter over to PA's Lounge tonight, and we're so glad we did. Not only did they have the Pats game on in the bar side, so we could stay updated on the football front, but they also had an evening of sweet (mostly) local sounds on the music side of the venue. Though we (sadly) missed opener Elizabeth Butters, we were able to catch The Battle of Land and Sea, Baba Yaga, and Tiger Saw, all of which put on remarkably simple yet compelling sets that restored our faith in seeing music. more ›

Monster Mash Halloween Benefit PA's Lounge, Union Square (356 Somerville Ave) October 29, 2007, 8:00 pm, 21+ $10 suggested donation Somerville's got good claim to the "Monster Mash" label. Bobby Pickett, responsible for penning the perennial Halloween hit (which is one of only three records to hit the Billboard Top 100 three separate times), was a Somerville native. Pickett passed away in April of this year, so this will be the world's first Halloween without... more ›

The April rain is seemingly behind us, the flowers are springing, but we're not yet upon summer festival season. Soon enough we won't be able to go a weekend without a sleepless night with ringing in our ears as we spent too many hours in the heat a little too close to a bank of speakers broadcasting to the masses. Well, that or a sweet show at Harbor Lights The Pavilion. Tuesday, 5/8 Grant-Lee... more ›

The temperature heats up a little this week. There will be a bit more humidity in the air. But unlike last week we're not going to be engaged in the same mad-dash around the city every night to catch all the good music. This week we can take our pick, settle in with a pint, and catch the good tunes at a single venue. Fantastic line-ups mark this weeks picks. From the opening band... more ›

Now that we're on this eight days a week kick for doing these picks it seems like it might be time for a new graphic. We'll give you a cookie if you design us a new one. Or maybe a Newcastle next time you catch us at the Middle East. Promise. Monday 8/7 The Roots with Talib Kweli It may not be a Brooklyn block party hosted by Dave Chappelle, but it will be... more ›

The season finale has just aired for your favorite TV show. NBC hasn't run Must See TV on Thursdays for a decade. The sun is shining and temperatures will be perfect for showing up jacketless to the next performance. Something to do every night this week – and rock it out for free with the pop tunes from WBOS' EarthFest line up on Saturday, starting at noon. All this and we're tivo-ing the Sox/Yanks games... more ›

We’re working for the weekend and it's only Monday. Rainy day outside and the sun is reported MIA until Wednesday. Despite the current gloom, things are looking mighty green outside - a good sign of spring. Flowering trees have done their thing and soon we’ll be smelling the lilacs. For now we’re settling for another cup of Stella while we soak up the tunes and the increasing temperatures. Monday 4/24: John Vanderslice mk Ultra... more ›

Admittedly we’re a little low on the Saturday evening picks for this week. Mostly because we know we’ll still be swigging green beer by the pint – or at least too hung-over from Friday night to make it out to a show. Again this week we’ve put a little classical music for those of you that feel a little culture is good for the soul. Monday 3/13: Dilated Peoples and Little Brother Rakaa, Evidence... more ›

This week we're trying hard to think about something other than how hard it is out here to be a pimp. Well, ok, maybe Bostonist is looking at the Oscars and just scratching our heads. We didn't know Jon Stewart could be that bland. We're still waiting to hear what Three 6 Mafia were wearing that made the camera all jakey last night. Now that we're done with the Academy we're looking back to Grammy.... more ›

Lent, what a time to give something up. Over here at Bostonist Headquarters we're thinking hard what we're going to drop come Wednesday. It won't be our MP3 player and it won't be live music. Maybe with this, week four of the now weekly music pick running on Monday we're going to be able to give up our lack of coverage of the local music scene. With fingers crossed we're raising a pint to forty days and forty nights with local music somewhere on the agenda. more ›

There are all sorts of celebrations going on this week. One year anniversaries, EP releases and, well, we threw in some alt-country just to spice it up a little bit. Bostonist is looking forward to to warmer weather, but until then we know where they might be heating things up on stages around the Hub. Some of the great shows you might find a pair or two of Bostonist's ears this week. Monday 2/20: The... more ›

Sunday--end your week with Leslie Hall. She's playing the Milky Way in a super-stacked Truth Serum show with Cassette, Robo Sapien, and PAL. Bostonist wants to see Leslie and the LYs live becaue dang, their myspace page is both intriguing and confusing. Who is this hip hop lady? What are these "gold pants" and "gem sweaters"? Oh man. more ›
