Boston's favorite holiday, Patriots' Day celebrates the first battles of the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Lexington and the Battle of Concord, the site of that "shot heard round the world." Today, April 19, is the "official" Patriots' Day (and the day on which the battles were fought in 1775), but the holiday is officially celebrated on the third Monday in April. Aside from the Boston Marathon and Sox game Monday, this weekend brings us......

This year the 111th Boston Marathon will be run, as usual, on Patriots Day. April 16th. The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) will be producing the event with over 500,000 spectators, as they have since the Marathon began in 1897. The Boston Marathon is the oldest annual marathon in the world - the modern marathon was revived by the Olympics in 1896, but is only run once every four years. As we were looking to......

..Running the Marathon on the International Space Station. Apparently you don't have to be in Boston on Patriots Day to run in the Marathon. For the last three years the Marathon has been run in Iraq with support from the Boston Athletic Association (or the BAA - the organization that runs the marathon). This year they'll be sending trophies and a finish line tape to Kosovo for a similar endeavor. The furthest competitor this year*......

It will be a busy weekend here in Boston. Many of our colleagues have the day off for Good Friday or are just looking forward to Patriots Day on Monday that has seemingly been renamed to Marathon Monday. Between the these two holidays, which don’t often coincide with each other, is Easter Sunday. Many in Boston will attend mass as usual, others will make one of their two appearances at church (the other being Christmas),......

Unless they look down at the sidewalk and realize you are on the Freedom Trail or their heel gets caught in one of those damn cobblestones downtown, Boston residents can often overlook the history right around them. Well, when the Fourth of July rolls into the city, residents are almost slapped in the face with a six-day-long historical celebration for Independence Day. Boston Harborfest kicks off today at noon in Faneuil Hall with a 500......

Today Massachusetts observes Patriots Day, memorializing the shots heard around the world in the battle at Lexington. Last night in the Providence, R.I. police headquarters Detective James Allen was shot and killed by his own weapon. A Boston man has been blamed for the crime. Bostonist sends our sympathy to the Providence police force even if we’re still mad for that speeding ticket we got last September. Esteban Carpio who doesn’t seem to have a......

With a three day weekend on tap, Bostonist took a minute to give out the choicest selections (and some free tickets!!). So after enjoying the weather all day, there will be no reason to stay in at night. If your planning to drink yourself into oblivion on Monday, Bostonist salutes you. Boston metal/hardcore stalwards, Converge play Harpers Ferry on Saturday and Sunday, should be a head walking good time. On Monday, Great Scott is......

Monday is Patriots Day, another one of those Massachusetts-only holidays that Bostonist adores. Some cynics suggest that it is no accident that two of our unique holidays, Evacuation Day and Patriots Day, fall on occasions usually celebrated with hearty amounts of drink (St. Patrick's Day and the Boston Marathon), and the third, Bunker Hill Day, saves June from being a month without time off and falls conveniently half-way between Memorial Day and July 4th. Bostonist......
