When it comes to the battle of Boston's daily papers, we didn't think that the Metro was in trouble. Sure, the daily papers aren't meaty, but they help while wile away the time on a subway ride. Boston NOW has also had some problems with getting the little things right, such as an unfortunate boo-boo on its front page after the New Hampshire primaries. But the Metro's parent company wants to sell Metro Boston. That......

SFist saw Christmas Day turn tragic after a Siberian tiger escaped from her pen at the San Francisco Zoo, killing a visitor and mauling two others. Phillyist counted down the top ten items on Philadelphia's New Year's wish list. Gothamist looked at the wooden bikes being offered for NYC's first bike share program on Governors Island. LAist received a Christmas present in the form of a drunk Santa Claus in a g-string. Bostonist launched......

Mike of The Food Monkey has joined Bostonist to share his thoughts about cooking, food history, restaurant trends, and any other Epicurean issues. He promises to discuss what tastes good, but not always what is in good taste. For more on consuming the opponents and other food news, go to the Food Monkey website. To contact Mike, go to the Food Monkey's contact page. Two weeks ago I began an experiment. I started the The......

Where do you start when giving Thanks to everyone in the local sports scene who's made the past eight months or so almost perfect? Not to beat a dead turkey, but the Red Sox are world champs, the Celtics are rejuvenated and playing great basketball, the Revolution made the Finals again, BC is headed for a bowl game you've actually heard of, the Bruins are playing better than expected and are fun to watch, and......

--Early this morning, a 22-year-old man was found shot in the head on Bowdoin Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene. --Last night, the Codman Square Safe Street Team heard shots fired at Dunlap and Washington. They soon found the alleged shooter, Oscar Mohamed, 19, of Jamaica Plain. Mohamed had shot two men. Both sustained non-life-threatening injuries. One of them didn't waste any time and took a cab to the hospital before emergency reinforcements......

We thought it was weird when a former Nader advisor filed suit against Bill Belichick for Videotapegate. But Paul Flannery at the Boston Magazine blog came across what may be the weirdest lawsuit of all time. Jonathan Lee Riches is a convicted felon who likes to file lawsuits. Flannery writes that Riches filed 36 of them in September. In the Pats-related suit, according to the Smoking Gun, Richman hand-writes, "Defendants cheated in the 2005 Superbowl......

Showtime is promoting the new season of its show Dexter, which is about a serial killer (Michael C. Hall), by dyeing water in city fountains blood-red. In some cities, residents couldn't miss the promotion. Philadelphia's Love Park Fountain bubbled up good and bloody if you're into that sort of thing. Bostonist was skeptical because, as we all know, the city is sensitive, quakes at the phrase "viral marketing," and doesn't like anything that might freak......

A survey was released saying that Bostonians aren't very good about washing their hands after blowing their nose or taking out the garbage. Now, we've seen some shameful displays of hygiene (or the lack thereof) on the T during cold season, but we've assumed that these noseblowers aren't representative of Boston in general. Boston ranked 21st out of 25 cities when it came to hand-washing frequency, with only St. Louis, Philadelphia, Portland (OR), and Denver......

There was very little else for Londonist to be concerned with when the threat of a Tube strike became a very unpleasant reality. The inconvenience was extreme: there aren't many alternatives to the Tube in London despite the best efforts of the Londonist team to get everyone from A to B. Brighter news came in the form of the first ever female Yeoman Warder, or Beefeater as the position is more commonly known, and......

Happy first weekend of September - and happy Labor Day weekend, too, for our American cities! Let's take a look at what's been happening around the Ist-a-verse. The deaths of two firefighters shook Bostonist this week. Boston's firefighters bent over backwards all week long - first, they fought flames pouring from the Boston Tea Party museum, and then a restaurant fire killed two and injured many more. Their efforts make everything else - like Tom......

With unseasonable weather descending upon much of North America, schools getting ready to reconvene, and sports seasons getting exciting, it's a busy time of year for us here in the Ist-A-Verse. Luckily, even with all the things we have to do, we still managed to get together to let you know what we've all been up to. After cooling down from a hot weekend of many badass Sunset Junction Street Fair photo dispatches, LAist asked......

Chicagoist is gearing up for this weekend's annual Air & Water Show along the lakefront. In what's becoming an annual tradition around there, staff member Todd McClamroch even got to fly with one of the participants. Chicagoist's decidedly opinionated readership was also appalled that one of their staffers found a popular local brewpub to be a great place to bring a kid. They also think that an unlikely activist for immigration rights should just take......

What with Paris Hilton's release earlier this week and the upcoming celebration of American Independence (sorry, Londonist!), we've been thinking a lot about freedom. Freedom to vote, freedom to choose, and most importantly, freedom to blog. Here are a few things we're happy we've been free to blog about this week. Being the nation's capital, DCist felt especially proud to let freedom ring this week by exposing the really important issues, like how sad they......

Sure, it's Memorial Day weekend, and it's 90 degrees out. But it's not too early to start thinking about this fall, specifically Patriots football. A limited number of single-game and standing-room tickets are on sale today. There aren't going to be many out there, so act quickly. Which games might you actually have a chance at getting to go to? Preseason (2) vs. Tennessee, NY Giants. Preseason football, combining the high prices and long......

Massachusetts might make it illegal to discriminate against heavy people and short people. The AP interviewed two women - one short, one large - about what they go through each day. And, if the measure passes, they'll have some legal ammunition if anyone gives them a hard time. Representative Byron Rushing is the force behind the proposed legislation. He tried it 10 years ago, but it didn't work out. Studies show that people who are......

Spring is when we get busy here in the Ist-A-Verse. Very busy. But, after staying bundled-up indoors all winter, it's nice for us to be out, about, and collecting things to write about for you. Here's a glimpse at what's been keeping your favorite citybloggers busily away from home and out of bed. For LAist, strong winds attacked LA on the same day the Feds raided the Crips. Not to fear, though: the Japanese version......

It seems like just yesterday that we were reading articles about the Sox home-field advantage, the way the team lights up the ballpark when they make it home to Yawkey Way. After Tuesday's 14-3 slaughter of the Mariners, Sox fans made their way into Fenway Park with cameras (lots and LOTS of cameras with very bright flashes) and the hopes that that advantage and the much-hyped Matsuzaka/Ichiro showdown would make for memorable baseball. It was......

We Boston sports fans are a funny bunch. While we cheer on the Patriots' hard play through those cold winter months, we're busy dishing, dissecting and debating the Red Sox hot stove season. And yet today, as we count down the hours until Dice-K takes the mound at Fenway, we can't get the Pats off our minds. Why? The new season's schedule is out, friends. New schedule. While we know that many will want to......

It seems like, all across the network, folks were up to no good. Maybe it was all the green beer from last weekend... Gothamist spent the week writing about New Yorkers behaving badly: at the post office, at the Garden, and at the fertility clinic. Calvin Klein may not be misbehaving, but he's just a little dirty, and in a completely different way than some NYC kitchens. SFist had its share of misbehave-rs, too, like......

The buzz began during today's Red Sox-Philadelphia spring training game: expect an announcement about a closer after the game. OR...just head on over to Curt Schillings' blog. As the Sox continued to battle the Phillies, Schill had already begun to spread the word through his latest post, "Paps to the Pen." "This wasn’t done because we have ‘too much starting pitching’, or because anyone was panicked about who would do what in the pen," Curt......

The brackets are here. Get it, and hide it from your boss! On second thought, your boss probably has one, too. The No. 1 seeds are Florida, North Carolina, Kansas, and Ohio State. Boston College is a seventh seed and will play against 10th seeded Texas Tech. At least they know what they'll be getting into with coach/professional nutter Bobby Knight. The Patriots buying frenzy continues, and they may have acquired a player who will......

The Bruins seem to have rolled over and played dead. Only a short time ago, they had a shot at the playoffs, and now it seems as if they just don't want to deal with the pressure. Or they couldn't take the pressure. Yesterday, they lost to the Philadelphia Flyers 4 to 1. And the Flyers are in the NHL basement, which says way too much about how the Bruins are playing. In baseball, spring......

We are loving us some Tim Thomas. The Bruins' goalie saved the day and helped the Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 6 to 3. Keep playing like that, fellas, and we can start entertaining hopes that one of our pro sports teams will wind up in a playoff. Maybe? It's time for the Bruins to get serious with the trade deadline coming up in a week. The Globe's Fluto Shinzawa is speculating that Marco Sturm......

The Celtics have a chance to make history tonight, but it's not the kind of history that will make anyone proud. As you're probably aware, if the Celtics lose to the Clippers tonight (completing the L.A. Sweep), they will be the owners of the longest losing streak in franchise history. 14 in a row. How...Clipper-esque. But the C's will make their presence felt at the All-Star Game; there are rumors that Gerald Green may......

Could you rank sports cities — objectively, now — by the number of MVP seasons that city has witnessed? The above is the question asked by Curtis Edmonds on his Northbound blog in response to a recent WaPo article. The Brattle will be screening four of the Marx Brothers classics all day New Year's Day. A Marx Brothers marathon isn't the same as a fistful of painkillers, an ice pack, or a Bloody Mary, but some laughs might make for the best hangover cure of all. Once upon a time in a land far, far…oh. No. It was Brockton. Back in 1890 James Edgar of Edgar's Department Store in Brockton sported a white beard and a belly laugh, he suited up as Santa Claus for an appearance in his Brockton Store. It wasn't Macy's, it wasn't Coke, it was a store in "The City of Champions" where the department store Santa was born. In the interest of full disclosure it appears......
