The Boston Globe has a stunning gallery of tuberculosis patients photographed by James Nachtwey, winner of a TED prize in 2007. The images are extraordinary not only for their stark depiction of illness, but also for how far removed they seem from everyday life--yet this disease is a reality for millions across the globe (1.7 million people died of TB last year). We may not think of tuberculosis as a big deal in the developed world, but it is the number one killer of people with HIV, and drug-resistant strains pose a huge problem to everyone.
