Maybe the Celtics took a page from the Bruins, who fell way behind Buffalo and then blew them out on Wednesday. Maybe KG was rusty after missing a game. Whatever happened, the C's dug themselves a quick 13-2 hole, then spent the rest of the night pounding a ragged-looking Detroit team for a 98-80 win that (as they say) wasn't nearly that close.

It won’t be a series; it’s going to be a spectacle. Last night, the Celtics beat then Pistons and will move on to face the Los Angeles Lakers. It will be the C’s first time at the finals since 1987; the Celtics faced off against the Lakers and came up short in the series 4 - 2. The two teams have met 11 times in the finals; the Celtics lead that with 8 wins.

All right, guys. You've done this 77 times this year, in every corner of the country, against everyone that's come to the other side of the court. Play your game, find your shots, play defense, don't be shy, and the Pistons will be nothing more than a series of bruises and a memory. We love going to games at the Garden, but we're happy to wait a week to see you again. Seal the deal in Auburn Hills tonight. Kthxbye.

"> Sox beat the Mariners, 5 -3, ending their seven away game losing streak. The 22 year old ace, Felix Hernandez was visibly frustrated last night going 7.2 innings with seven hits, five strike outs, five walks, one balk and gave up a homerun in the top of the 4th to David Ortiz.

Outnumbered? Well, if you count Motown Steve Javie as wearing a Detroit jersey over his referee's uniform. Endless moaning about the refs is for losers and Spurs, so we'll keep it brief. We'll just say that if you have the desire to send Richard Hamilton any fan mail, just address it to the free throw line at the Garden; it's the one place he's sure to be found.

Last night will go down in history. Jon Lester, who in the last two years has battled cancer and pitched the clinching game in the World Series, threw his first complete game, and, by the way, it was a no hitter. Last night’s historic event was the first no hitter thrown since September 1st of last year. In case you forgot, that was thrown by Clay Buchholz against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway. Lester threw the 18th no hitter in Sox history and was first Sox lefty to throw a no hitter in over 50 years.

Movie mogul Samuel Goldwyn once famously said of preachy movies, "If you want to send a message, call Western Union.". Well, Western Union is now out of the telegram business, so the Celtics had to send a message to Detroit some other way, playing stifling defense, fundamental offense, and grinding out a win that - well, that sends the message - that they just might actually be the best team in the East.

You know the old saying: you can't win 'em all. There are some gentlemen in Foxboro who may disagree, but the theory holds up for the most part. Which the Celtics and their eager fans learned last night at the Garden, as the battle-tested Pistons came in and outlasted the C's for the first home loss of the season.
