The Lakers may have played like an Eastern team on Thursday, but Ray Allen played like a record-breaker tonight. Not only were Allen's eight 3-pointers an NBA record for a finals game (breaking a record previously held by himself, Scottie Pippen, and Kenny Smith), but he also broke the record for most threes in a half with seven in the first. Not to be outdone, Rajon Rondo ramped it up with 19 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. We'll have more tomorrow, but we can go to bed happy tonight. [NYT]
It was the word heard 'round Boston on Monday. You heard it confidently predicted during the pregame TV coverage. You saw it on the faces of the Celtics as they faced down the Magic for the fourth time this series.
Monday truly was a golden day in the Boston sports scene. We'd go so far as to say that it's one of the top three sports days you're going to experience all year. And while we'd happily return to the those hallowed days of old (read: 2007) when Boston truly was Sports City, USA, part of what made Monday's Bruins/Red Sox/Celtics victories so sweet was that we now appreciate it more. We are delighted by such wonderful events, rather than feel entitled to them.
Jack Edwards put it succinctly. "Snowball 1, hell 0." The 2009-2010 Boston Bruins - the team that has battled injury, listlessness, and a frequently maddening inability to put a puck into the opposition's net - are going to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
There was rain. There was volcanic ash. There were jitters, fears, and crossed fingers. And then there was Marathon Monday, a picture perfect April day that featured some of the most thrilling area sports action we've seen in quite some time.
After all those years of wishing and hoping, Minnesota Twins fans finally took in the sight of their team running onto the stunning, brand new Target Field on Monday afternoon. Cheers rained down upon the smiling face of Joe Mauer. The sun was shining, it was warm in Minneapolis--it seemed a perfect day for Minnesota baseball.
Your 2009 Boston Red Sox clearly don't like to make anything easy. They hit losing skids, slugging droughts and pitching woes. They load the bases before settling in to retire the batters. They fall into deficits before they creep back to make the game thrilling.
We already knew that tonight was going to be intense, given that the Celts, Bruins and Red Sox again find themselves playing on the same night. Monday surprised us, however, by successfully upping the drama surrounding most of these matchups. In one of those "only in Boston sports" setups, tonight has the potential of becoming another one of those nights that we discuss in the years to come.
We could talk about Boston playoff sports, but who really wants to do that today? The Bruins played. The Celtics played. Both wound up on the losing end of the spectrum (and we'll talk about both in a minute).
If you thought that the Celtics were somehow going to overcome a 28-point deficit to defeat the Magic during their second-round showdown on Monday night, you weren't alone. It was clear that just about every single green- and white-clad soul inside the Garden on Monday and many of those watching at home thought that this team is the one team that could pull off such a comeback.
Smell that? That's the scent of blood in the air. The Bruins have a chance to notch their first playoff series win in a decade. And all they need to do is win one more game - but for the psyche of their fans and the region in general, we recommend they win tonight and end any suspense.
Today will require coordination. Planning. Drive and passion. But, if you've set things up properly, you will be fully prepared to enjoy all that Boston sports have to offer today. You'll need two TVs or at least some really great picture-in-picture, but it can happen. It can be done.

If last night left Red Sox fans feeling punchdrunk, this morning we're nursing the hangover. Last night's game would, if possible, be best left unspoken of, unremembered and, if we could figure out how to work that time machine we've been working on, unplayed.
The Red Sox began a crucial three-game stint against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night with the kind of subtlety taught in the Tony Montana School of Thought: guns blazing, eyes a little crazy-like, bodies falling to the wayside. Sure, the Boston weapon of choice was bats, rather than guns, but Scott Kazmir will be the first to tell you that they are just as brutal and deadly.
It won’t be a series; it’s going to be a spectacle. Last night, the Celtics beat then Pistons and will move on to face the Los Angeles Lakers. It will be the C’s first time at the finals since 1987; the Celtics faced off against the Lakers and came up short in the series 4 - 2. The two teams have met 11 times in the finals; the Celtics lead that with 8 wins.

In a way, it doesn't feel right; the Colts should perhaps be in town today. They are(were) the defending champs, after all. They gave the Patriots the first in a long stretch of runs for their money that the Pats survived. The Dungy-Belichick and Manning-Brady rivalries are about the biggest stories in sports in this young century.
Ask Bill Belichick about last week's game, and you may as well be asking him about the Treaty of Ghent. Ask him about the 14-point-underdog Chargers, and you may as well be asking him about an All-Star team composed of the '85 Bears, '89 49ers and the Justice League of America. You know what you get from Coach Bill when you ask about football. But apparently, ask him about team fight songs and you hit a nerve.
