Via Wicked Local, Newsday reports that a Somerville woman gave birth yesterday at the Port Authority bus station in New York. We can't imagine a worse place to give birth, except perhaps on a Fung Wah bus that's in motion. The family was apparently en route to Oklahoma City for some inexplicable reason--we recommend avoiding all bus travel when 9 months pregnant. Despite his strange beginnings, the baby (born at around 6:00 p.m. Tuesday near Gate 24), is apparently doing just fine. We expect he'll be really into that "Wheels on the Bus" song when he grows up.

Last week's Project Runway teamwork challenge brought out some drama, and this week continued to spice things up with a field trip to the Port Authority. The designers had to grab as much denim as possible (in the form of Levi's jeans) out of a giant warehouse and use it to create an original design going along with the Levi's spirit. At the start of the show, we weren't really sure what the Levi's spirit was, but boy, did those designers show us.
--King Downing, the ACLU coordinator for the Campaign Against Racial Profiling, won his case against the Massachusetts Port Authority and the State Police. He sued because he felt that he was illegally detained at Logan Airport in 2003, and a jury agreed with him. [Boston Herald, WCVB] --City officials in Everett plan to develop an emergency plan to improve response to disasters following last week's tanker explosion. [WBZ] --The Boston Society of Film Critics gathered...
--Deval Patrick boosted the payroll for his own staff by $1.1 million. The Herald is not amused. [Boston Herald] --Speaking of not being amused, Outraged Liberal is appropriately outraged at the Herald for some fuzzy math regarding the news bit mentioned above. [Massachusetts Liberal] --King Downing, an official with the ACLU who specializes in fighting racial profiling, suing the Massachusetts Port Authority and the Massachusetts State Police. He was hassled while leaving the airport, and...
As expected, Mayor Menino is following up after toxicology results showed that late firefighters Paul Cahill and Warren Payne had alcohol and drugs in their bodies. He's put together a three-person panel to review the fire department's policies. The panel consists of "a national fire-code specialist, a doctor who specializes in substance abuse treatment, and the former head of the Massachusetts Port Authority." That in itself is no big surprise, but Bostonist couldn't help noticing...
--Yesterday, authorities thwarted a terror plot that targeted a jet fuel pipeline at New York's JFK airport. There's no sign of a link between the JFK Plot and Logan, but Boston displayed its usual swift response to the slightest whiff of terror. So we're not surprised that Logan boosted security. Here's what's changing: "The stepped-up patrols were inside airport facilities as well as outside gates, said [the director of corporate security for the Massachusetts Port...
The Massachusetts Port Authority board voted on some new policies and benefit packages yesterday. The group approved changes in the sick leave accrual policy and reduced the medical benefit for new employees. Until now MassPort paid 100% of the healthcare premium for their employees, the new policy will require new employees to pay 20% of the policy's premium. On July 1 this year current employees will start paying 5% of the premium, a year from then 10%, and 15% after another year.
As fall settles in and another calendar page gets turned, thoughts turn from bbqs and vacations to holidays and the realization that '06 is coming to an end. With all that going on, with change in the air, we wonder what is it that made that makes the -ists ponder? Phillyist is concerned that the war on Trans fats could affect it's beloved cheese steak sandwiches, something for which we should all be concerned....
Recently Bostonist noticed the influx of JetBlue ads around the MBTA stations in Boston. We also observed the changes that are set to take place at Logan Airport in the coming months when Terminal A, finally, comes online. Delta will move operations over to Terminal A and JetBlue will take on many of the gates currently occupied by Delta in Terminal C. JetBlue has been sparking some rumors for the last couple of days about...
