In a shocking turn of events, something unfortunate occurred at the MBTA today, and nobody had a good plan for dealing with it! Oh wait: that kind of thing happens all the time. Anyway, today's unfortunate event was a massive system-wide MBTA power outage that left folks stranded underground all over town for 20 minutes or more. Some power has been restored, but signals are not working and trains are operating slowly. The Red Line is still stuck. The MBTA's website describes the mishap as a "power problem." It may have been concentrated between Kenmore and Park Street as that's where crews are working, creating "10-15 delays" for Green Line commuters. We're going to go with much more than 15 delays caused by this incident. The police say all power has been restored but that service is not back in business yet. Alternate transportation is suggested.

Despite what Bostonist is now calling "The Debacle" of last night, other stuff happened today.

If the amount of T alerts entering our inbox is any indication, the new T Alert system appears to be working just fine. In fact, it proves what we already knew--that the green line is a sluggish nightmare thanks to disabled trains. An alert appears when a 15-20 delay happens. But one commenter, boston_sean, left us a note that the T Alert system needs a little work when it comes to the commuter rail: I...

While you, and we, have been fixated on the Red Sox and the Patriots and the Celtics, the Revolution have quietly made their way back to the MLS Cup. And it's time attention is paid. The Revs are in the Finals for the third straight year, and fourth since 2002. They got there by outlasting Chicago 1-0, with Taylor Twellman scoring his second goal of the playoffs. Which was also the team's second goal of...

It's Miller Time, but you might not be getting to the bar as quickly as you'd like. We heard from a tipper at 4:45 pm that trains were dumping all their passengers off at Park Street and that it was mighty hot and mighty crowded. In a Boston Community Live Journal post that appeared at noon, littlestarletta noted that a communications center at High Street lost the ability to communicate with all trains and buses....

Finally, the city has some good news about crime. While a steady stream of shootings have taken place, statistics are out showing that nonfatal shootings are down by 33 percent compared to last year. The Globe lists many possible reasons for why shootings are down - more patrols, cold temperatures, gang truces, better moods. What's important is that the shootings are down, and we hope it stays that way. The Globe also had a nifty...

Brockton, the city of champions, was in the dark yesterday. A squirrel hit the National Grid substation and was electrocuted yesterday causing a power outage for 13,000 electric customers which lasted for nearly two hours. The Boston Herald reports that in 2004 the same scenario caused a power outage at the same substation. One might suggest that they put up a fence or netting around the area to prevent squirrel infiltration. It's fall and the acorns have been hitting the ground. Squirrels are hording them away for the winter before they hibernate for the cold months – but apparently one was looking for a little warmth a little early. It is surprising that such a small animal can cause such a problem for electricity customers, but perhaps even more surprising that it doesn't happen more often.
