It was about a week ago when we noted that the Bruins were in 6th place in the Prince of Wales Eastern Conference, which was a decent place to be, thus drawing the winner of the weak-sister Southeast Division. In that week, the B's have solidified the 6th spot, but are now officially in spittin' distance of bigger and better things. They've won blowouts this week, they've won shootouts, they've won at home, they've won on the road. They've done everything but beat Montreal. Now we see 6th place as little more than a nice springboard. more ›

--Looking for a good Super Bowl party? Bring your favorite beer mug to the Milky Way, where the big game will screen, and then you can celebrate with some candlepin bowling. Sponsored by the Mug Project, which wants people to use a mug instead of guzzling their way through disposable cups, and Neighbors for Neighbors. 6:00 pm. more ›

Never has a matchup between the best team in football and the worst team in football had this much riding on it. The Patriots, as we all know, have clinched the division, home-field advantage, and everything that matters in a typical season. The Miami Dolphins are God-awful, zooming towards the #1 draft pick, and would be in line for a season of historic ineptitude except that the stupid Ravens were worse last week. Should be a gimme, right? more ›

You know the old saying: you can't win 'em all. There are some gentlemen in Foxboro who may disagree, but the theory holds up for the most part. Which the Celtics and their eager fans learned last night at the Garden, as the battle-tested Pistons came in and outlasted the C's for the first home loss of the season. more ›

Hope you sports fans were able to relax yesterday. The disappointing non-slaughter of the Jets is in the rear view mirror, the Dolphins game isn't quite as exciting since the stupid Ravens ended Miami's bid for a winless season, everything is sewn up in the AFC, and the Monday Night game wasn't that exciting. Plus, the Celtics and Bruins were off. more ›

The Celtics are pleased to announce that they've added an extra level to the bandwagon, and it's poised to start its run tonight at the Garden against Washington. This is the original bandwagon, mind you; not the auxiliary bandwagons the team expects to roll out over the course of the season. Naysayers (and there are some) point out that the supporting cast around Ghidorah is untested and unreliable. OK, whatever. So their starting point guard,... more ›

The Purple Rain sing-a-long will start at Coolidge Corner tonight, July 20, and tomorrow night, July 21, at midnight. Wait. That title sounds kinda dirty. But, then again, so is Prince - or The Artist, The Artist Formerly Known As Prince, or whatever he calls himself. The lyrics to "Darling Nikki" could send Tipper Gore into fits, but he's even more scandalous to so-called important people because he gave his latest album away for free.... more ›

Ball, Called Strike, Swinging Strike, Ball, Ball. Full Count to Ortiz at his first at bat in the MLB All-Star Game. Crappy little fizzle out to short right field just behind the dirt gives us this result on the Gameday tracker: "David Ortiz reaches on missed catch error by first baseman Prince Fielder, assist to second baseman Chase Utley." We've never fancied Papi a big runner, a big hitter for sure, but he's not likely to beat the ball to first when his hit dinks just outside of the infield (Lugo, Youk, Pedroia, oh there are lots of guys who might do it, Papi is way down on that list). more ›

We have a confession to make: we didn't pay a lot of attention to last night's Home Run Derby. Our tolerance for Chris Berman yelling "back back back" is low. Our desire to see kayakers crashing into each other in San Francisco Bay was present, but not overwhelming. And without Papi, what's the point? So congratulations to Anaheim's Vlad Guerrero, who won the Derby, despite the fact that no home runs landed in the huge... more ›

From the tallest skyscraper in the City of Brotherly Love to Canadian tourism copywriting brilliance, here's what you should know from our -ist cities: This week, Phillyist took a gleeful listen to the White Stripes' exciting new release, watched in awe as their new tallest skyscraper was finally completed, found a cheaper way to get to Gothamist, invented a tasty new dessert, and brought back their Craigslist Round-Up feature with a bang. Bostonist watches... more ›

Curt Schilling got a hit! After bunting into a strikeout in the second, Schill hit a bleeder in the fourth that rolled right past second base into center field for a single. Maybe we should focus on that, since Curt's pitching was...well...bad. Two starts after his Flirt with Destiny, Schilling got rocked again, by Atlanta's bats, giving up six runs on ten hits in less than five innings. His fastball doesn't seem to be fast... more ›

Seattlest has a talk with the photographer from last week's "Segway Mom" and then experiences some dissension in the ranks over the question of wine vs. beer. It's not West Side Story, but about as close as they'll get. They're also still waiting on some inbox relief after a spammer is arrested. As Chicagoist counts down the days to its third anniversary party, they found all-organic pizza to be underwhelming amidst the hoopla, tried... more ›

Twins ace Johan Santana only made it five innings, but that was more than enough to send the Red Sox bats into a tizzy from which they never recovered. The Minnesota bullpen, if anything, was sharper than the starter, and the result was a 2-1 loss and the waste of a very good outing from Sox starter Julian Tavarez. more ›

Despite all our lovin' of Lovie, what was supposed to be the Bears' next Super Bowl Shuffle turned into the Rex Grossman Stumble as the Colts defeated the Bears 29-17. more ›

Between fake terrorist alerts and scandals big and small, this just might be the Best Best of the -ists ever. We're exhausted just thinking about it. First up, SFist, who saw their little 'ole site be the center of what was a nice little scandal (even getting their editor on TV) only to find their scandal dwarfed by the even bigger scandal caused by their Mayor boffing one of his aides' wife. We're not... more ›

As the world holds its breath, teetering precariously on the cusp of the Super Bowl (well, at least in America), the wheels of the -ists keep on turning. more ›

There must be calm before the storm this week. We can only imagine that our favorite local folks are saving up their energy so they can rock it big into the new year. There are certainly a few great shows on this week's agenda, don't get us wrong. But since we have a minute to take a moment to look at Gridskipper's post they tacked to the bathroom wall last week: "The Mighty Mighty... more ›

One of the delights of being married (aside from companionship, tax benefits, etc.) is to hear about all the details and silliness of the dating game without suffering any emotional ups and downs. So it was that Bostonist was recently regaled by a friend with the tale of her date with one James Mitchell, a middle-aged gentleman who throws fabulous parties around town, and apparently fancies himself quite the catch (a notion with which our... more ›

The debacle that was Hot Stove, Cool Music last week has made us ready for a week of good music. The debacle in that it poured so hard they had to move the whole thing under the bleachers (inside). The sound quality was poor and James Taylor pulled a rock star move and only made the stage for a single song because he didn't have enough space. This week we're looking forward to cooler... more ›

While we don’t long for the days of having a required summer reading list, Bostonist has been feeling a bit inspired to pick up a book and actually start reading something not on a computer screen. Since we’re going to be “vacationing” in the city this year, we might as well read some books that are set here in our fair state. Here are some of our Bostonist staff picks for your reading enjoyment. History... more ›

Another rainy day. Ugh. Sometimes the rain really needs to be met with nothing better than a little bit of silliness. The new mash-up video trend that's rolling around the Internets can often be quite amusing. But, to be honest, the Brokeback trailer parodies have seen their day and might not be cool to blog about anymore. Today's video isn't really Boston related other than the fact that the music it's set to is Boston's More than a Feeling. The band came out of Boston, but the visual subject, Anne of Green Gables, was set in Prince Edward Island. The rock video remake will make you cherish the bosom friendship of Anne Shirley, the kindness and love of Matthew and Marilla, and fall in love with that crush of crushes, Gilbert Blythe, once again. more ›

We live in an iTunes nation. It's easy to pull a track down to your pod for under a buck. Bostonist still longs for cover art, liner notes, and that masterwork that is a multi-track collection of songs we call an album. Listed here is our much discussed, unbiased by payola, top 25 albums of 2005. After the jump you'll find where some of us stand individually on the subject of the years best. (Apparently... more ›

. We’re happy to see that the Gothamist network is also ready to make the leap from Philly (launched only hours before our youngest sibling, Parisist) to Miami. more ›

And finally, on Sunday, there is The Friends Of Lady K Benefit at Great Scott with USAISAMONSTER. So go out and have fun! more ›

We consider ourselves a fairly cultured group here at Bostonist, but we still squirm at the word "opera". It envokes images of yawning, uncomfortable shoes, and not knowing when to clap. Until now. Our favorite children's book, "The Little Prince," has been transformed into an opera and opens tonight at the Shubert Theater. more ›

It seems like Boston has been having weather more like londonist is used to experiencing. The promise of 50 or 60 degree weather hasn’t materialized as of yet, though it’s rumored to roll in around midnight. The fog and rain we’ve seen is a little better than the frigid temps we saw last year at this time. We have the fog but no Prince Harry scandal. What is a “Fancy-Dress” party anyway, is it a costume ball with British twang? more ›
