Bravo's had a rough time recently: the complete FAIL that is The Fashion Show and far too much Real Housewives of Wherever made us wonder how the network that brought us The Rachel Zoe Project, Project Runway, and perennial favorite Top Chef could fall so low, so fast. Things (maybe) change this week! Make sure to catch the premiere of Bostonist favorite, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List tonight at 10 PM. Stay tuned for our Top Chef Masters rundown on Wednesday.

We spoke too soon last week. Mass. man Wesley was cut from Project Runway Season 5 for an icky, uncomfortable-looking brown dress. The challenge was for contestants to make a cocktail dress from "green" (i.e., environmentally friendly) fabric. Wes may not have come out on top on the show, but he can take solace on the shoulder of Daniel, the other PR contestant from Massachusetts. The two are rumored to be dating. The idea first came to folks who noticed that both were listed as in a relationship on MySpace, where they also picked each other as top friends. On the internet, nothing is secret (including runway results).
Season 5 of Project Runway premiered last night, with two Massachusets contestants. Great Barrington boy Daniel and Wesley from Blackstone both averted auf'ing to remain on the catwalk. From the Berkshires to Pratt to PR, Daniel looks to have had some fine life experiences. He once aspired to be a zoologist, but now uses animal and nature inspirations in his fashion designs. Wesley studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology and interned with Marc Jacobs and Levi.
A couple of weeks ago, we posed the question, ‘What happened to Jay McCarroll?’ We found out he that he had produced his first line and had a few other projects in the works. One of which, the documentary "Eleven Minutes," debuts tonight at the Boston Independent Film Festival. We got a chance to speak to Jay about the movie, fashion and what we can expect in the near future.
Rami, Christian, and Jillian are all designer--and now household--names. But which one will prevail in this week's Project Runway fashion finale? Who will special guest judge Posh Spice deem most worthy of her fashion favor? Will knits prevail over feathers? Intricate weaving over knits? Floppy hats over Grecian dresses? Read on after the jump to find out!
This week's Project Runway made us think one thing and one thing only: Britney Spears totally has a career in professional wrestling if she makes it out of the hospital (which, apparently, she just did). The runway challenge this week was to design an outfit for a female professional wrestler in the WWE. Some designers took the challenge to heart and ran with the campy sexuality of it all, while others were blinded by the sequins and rhinestones and came up with poor imitations of real wrestling outfits.
The exhibit Rhythms of Modern Life: British Prints 1914–1939 shows the sharp, mechanical-feeling prints that set the artistic tone for the future. Museum of Fine Arts. Read Bostonist's preview of the show. Runs through June 1.
Last week's Project Runway teamwork challenge brought out some drama, and this week continued to spice things up with a field trip to the Port Authority. The designers had to grab as much denim as possible (in the form of Levi's jeans) out of a giant warehouse and use it to create an original design going along with the Levi's spirit. At the start of the show, we weren't really sure what the Levi's spirit was, but boy, did those designers show us.
This season of Project Runway is going well--maybe a little too well. Where's a Santino or a Jeffrey when you need one? Watching people competently make acceptable designs week after week is interesting from a fashion perspective, but it's not getting us our trashy reality TV fix. Why can't Christian and Sweet P get in a fistfight? Why isn't Chris dressing up in drag on set? Why do we still get Ricky and Rami confused sometimes? The designers are keeping a focus on design, which is great, but not really dramatic enough. And even the judges aren't being nitpicky enough to keep things interesting. Here's hoping some drama surfaces in the next few weeks, or this will be a real yawn of a season. There isn't even anybody on the show we want to see kicked out! How can you run a reality show like this? It's just one big happy family of pretty swell designers.
This week's latest episode of Project Runway started off with one of those "judge not, lest ye be judged" moments, wherein the fashion-designin' contestants got to pick their own models. Some chose to stay with the models they'd worked with for weeks, while others dissed their old clotheshorses in favor of greener pastures. In contrast to last week's episode, which required designers to create looks for women who'd lost lots of weight, this week had the contestants create outfits from items they snagged from the Hershey's Store in Times Square. Instead of a budget, the contestants got time--five minutes to grab as much candy-related crap as possible to use to make a gorgeous garment. We've been resisting the temptation to make a remark about the sweet character of this challenge, but the owner of the Reese's store took care of that for us by telling the PR contestants to "have a sweet day" when they left. It was almost too much!
This week, Project Runway's fashionista fantasyland featured some actual "real people"--if by "real people" you mean "real people who've already lost 40-70+ pounds of their hideous real people weight." But that kind of weight loss is commendable, and deserves some recognition--and for a few lucky ladies, it came in the form of a professionally designed outfit and an appearance on Project Runway Season 4, Episode 5!
The Holiday season is in full swing in NYC, with holiday lights in Brooklyn, a giant snow globe in Bryant Park and Chanukah specials for ham. One citizen decided to go vigilante on annoying car alarms, a murder suspect used a fake Asian accent on the stand and a video of a man being beaten up by teenage girls on a subway shocked the city. And we interviewed soon-to-be-leaving-Gawker editor Choire Sicha, who said,...
"Bostonist" and "Fashion" are words that rarely go together, but we've been recapping the latest Project Runway, and we know what looks bad. Sports fan gear isn't the best-looking stuff in the world, but it serves a purpose. People love the Patriots, and they love to show their New England Patriots pride with jerseys, hats, and the occasional body paint. That said, whoever thought to combine a purse with Patriot Pride created a monstrous fashion...
This week's episode of Project Runway Season 4 brought us all sorts of drama. From forcing the competitors to ::gasp:: work together to create a cohesive set of outfits to having them use ::gasp:: outdated materials to make their looks, Heidi & Co. (TM) challenged designers to the max. Accustomed to working on their own with only the latest materials, some designers reacted negatively and picked unnecessarily melodramatic fights with one another. Still, a few...
Thanks to a glut of turkey and leftovers, Bostonist has been unable to fit into our fancy clothes--or our Project Runway review schedule--for the past few weeks. But thanks to some long sessions on the elliptical, we're all zipped up and back on track to follow Heidi's proteges all the way down the catwalk. Last week, Sarah Jessica Parker showed up--graciously refraining from grossing us out with an overly Carrie outfit--and asked the designers to...
In Los Angeles, LAist most definitely celebrated Thanksgiving like no other. After all, one has to keep up all the energy to keep on walking the line at the Writers Strike and fighting the unfortunate return of the wildfires in Malibu, which single handedly destroyed over fifty homes within the first 24 hours. National outlets may be covering the fires, but CNN also found it is easier to buy a gun than fruit and...
Beauty and the Geek: This week, the geeks pick up flair bartending skills, while the beauties attempt to learn zoology, which is a thinly veiled ruse to give the beauties a chance to scream at animals. Yet again, Sam, the male beauty and Tufts Nicole's partner, dominated the competition, and Jasmine, David the Somerville LARPer's partner, freaked out at holding the icky animals. To make Jasmine feel better after bungling the beauty challenge, David made...
Not only does Project Runway Season 4 feature a contestant named Sweet P (was the "ea" part of "pea" that intrusive?), it also has the requisite dude with whack hair, dude with whack facial hair, and a fabulous first episode title: "Sew Me What You Got." Sweet! None of the designers appear to have Massachusetts connections, but models Lauren, Marcia, and Wendi are all from the Bay State. Lauren started modeling in Boston, and Marcia...
Professional Bruin and full-time Iron Man Phil Kessel scored the winning goal in a shootout against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Elsewhere, say what you will about the Celtics, but at least they know how to dress. Well, maybe only one of the Celtics knows how to dress. The Globe took a peek inside Sebastian Telfair's closets and found some seriously high-end merchandise, with an emphasis on Louis Vuitton. This news led Bostonist to what might be...
Sometimes you need to clean yourself up, get serious, and move in with daddie for a few months before you head to Latin America for a new gig. The District bid's Jenna Bush adios. D.C.-based television shows have an elderly audience and DCist has some suggestions to fix that. They're also throwing Butterstick the panda bear a birthday bash. Yeah, we may have a few issues with our World Cup broadcasters here, but this...
