This weekend's Hollywood blockbuster openings are even more depressing than usual, with an ancient Stallone (looking like "an overcooked Ball Park frank," according to E), a cybercrime flick, and a take on a decade-old SNL skit "leading" the pack. Rambo, Untraceable, and Meet the Spartans (which currently has a negative rating at Rotten Tomatoes, something we haven't seen very often, if ever!) will open this weekend, most likely to some box office clamor despite the high probability that all these films will send discerning viewers clamoring for the exits. more ›

The Wet Spots With the Boston Babydolls Coolidge Corner Theatre Saturday, October 13, midnight, $16.50 Official site The Wet Spots are a self-proclaimed "kinky" musical duo that claims to be the "product of a foursome between Cole Porter, Annie Sprinkle, Ira Gershwin, and Dr. Ruth." Frankly, that offspring sounds scary as hell, and the Wet Spots are actually a duo--Cass King and John Woods. The pair specializes in bawdy songs with titles such as "Labia... more ›

For a brief moment at Avalon Monday night, Bostonist felt like we'd been transported to 1964. Flanked on both sides by an eight piece, horn-fueled band, a young woman and her towering bee hive took the mic in front of a simple back drop strung with twinkling lights. Two male back-up singers, elegantly suited-up, began moving in unison. more ›

Yeah, it was inevitable. The backlash, that is. When the turbo-hype visited upon soul sensation Amy Winehouse in the UK started to pick-up steam stateside, it was only a matter of time before the chorus of praise would be matched by a groundswell of derision -- or what's the BFD questioning (at least one gawker simply can't understand what all the fuss is about). more ›

Fall seems to have set in, at least for now. the temperatures are dropping and people all over the metro have been forced to put their flip-flops away for some more sensible footwear. At least until it gets warm again in another week. Or so we hope. Music abounds again this week and we're listening. Tuesday, 9/12 Branford Marsalis Quartet Braggtown CD Release Concert Berklee alum Branford Marsalis created Cambridge-based (and Rounder distributed) Marsalis... more ›

Usually we try to wax poetic about some sort of relevant piece of information. This week we're dropping all that fluff and jumping right into this week's set of picks – lots of good shows on tap for this week. Zydeco to classical, hip hop to electronica, and Bon Jovi. Monday 7/24: Wattstax with Eli "Paperboy" Reed & the True Loves Allston's Paperboy plays an opening revue for a screening of Wattstax, a film... more ›

The debacle that was Hot Stove, Cool Music last week has made us ready for a week of good music. The debacle in that it poured so hard they had to move the whole thing under the bleachers (inside). The sound quality was poor and James Taylor pulled a rock star move and only made the stage for a single song because he didn't have enough space. This week we're looking forward to cooler... more ›

We tired of celebrity sightings that involve Matt Damon and Ben Affleck – their celebrity news has been decidedly boring as of late. So we’ve turned our attention to another Boston native, the wonderfully colorful character known as “King of R&B Bobby Brown” (thank Tyra Banks for bringing his monarchy to our attention). Last summer we were a bit skeptical as Being Bobby Brown was set to come on the air, but it’s been a... more ›

R. Kelly's Trapped In The Closet is the story of Sylvester, a hapless philanderer whose simple one-night stand with a preacher's wife leads him into a tangled and ever more preposterous web of lies, betrayal, asthmatic midgets, and telenovela-quality cliffhangers. Lauded by some (notably R. Kelly himself) as a work of genius and enjoyed by many as "the Plan 9 of music videos," this shamelessly operatic R&B melodrama has spawned its own Wikipedia entry, an Upright Citizens Brigade symposium, and a great many parodies: one of them a South Park episode involving a certain totally not gay Scientologist, but none of them funnier than the thing itself. more ›

We'll call it hit or miss. Some weeks are totally on and our agenda's are filled to the brim with great stuff. Some weeks we're pulling together a bunch of shows and thinking that the list of "go see" music is surprisingly spare. Just like the weather is wonderful an warm some weeks and gloomy others. This week we've collected a number of selections that will bring some sunshine to your gloomy day - or... more ›

Bostonist crossed over to the other side of the river, also known as Cambridge, this past weekend and came across a Central Square legend at the Cantab Lounge. While many of you are probably aware of this dive bar, the Cantab is always featuring some sort of entertainment to enjoy with your beer. Besides their Singer-Songwriter Open Mike nights and Bluegrass nights, the weekend features the Peanut Man himself, Little Joe Cook and the Thrillers, who hits the stage on Friday and Saturday with his own R&B songs as well as any requests the crowd might have. Clad in a golden peanut medallion and matching ring, Joe has been around in the music scene since the 1950s when he hit it big with the song, "Peanut" as well as appearing on American Bandstand and The Apollo. He's been at the Cantab since the late 1960s, and this 82-year-old singer can still attract a young crowd. Joe welcomes all the "hamburgers and cheeseburgers" to the Cantab and starts off the show with a group prayer, and then leaps right into his favorites, including "The Department Store" complete with sexual inneuendos and "Bibbity Bop" with the crowd singing along. Performing three sets each night, the Peanut Man is a classic himself and definitely worth checking out. A cover charge of $8 is expected at the door and The Peanut Man goes on at 9 p.m. more ›

The 47th GRAMMY Awards aired last night on CBS and while Bostonist was hoping for something exciting to happen, like a wardrobe malfunction for example, nothing out of the ordinary really occured. Ray Charles was the big winner with the his collection of duets (completed a few months before his death), "Genius Loves Company" winning Best Album and "Here We Go Again," a duet with songstress Norah Jones, picking up Record of the Year. Charles... more ›
