Patriots owner Robert Kraft is ready for some football. “Thank God for NFL football," he said after a tumultuous offseason in which his beloved wife, Myra Kraft, died. The entirety of Patriots fandom might say the same thing without having as significant a reason why. We have another matter of hours until the Pats open the season tonight in Miami so the anticipation has more time to build on already high expectations after another unsatisfying playoff exit earlier this year followed a 14-2 regular season. Bill Belichick reloaded with two high-profile players, Chad Ochocinco and Albert Haynesworth, who you'd think didn't fit with his style. He did manage to keep 18 undrafted players on the 53-man roster, the third most in the NFL. more ›

The NFL's lockout is over after 4.5 months as players voted to approve a 10-year deal on Monday, the same pact owners agreed on Sunday. Each side admitted to having to compromise. Both sides consider it a fair deal that will start the game again. Unsigned players and draft picks can sign as early as tomorrow; all training camps will open between Wednesday and Sunday. more ›

While Wes Welker visited a North Attleboro school with a real hero, a bunch of Patriots, including Tom Brady, visited Henry Grew Elementary School in Hyde Park. Brady brought Robert Kraft, Deion Branch, Patrick Chung, Brandon Merriweather and Zoltan Mesko with him. We don't know who drove. The Pats visited the school to promote the NFL's Play 60 program to get kids to exercise for at least 60 minutes of a day. The school got a $10,000 grant to buy gym or recess equipment. The highlight was Brady showing off his now controversial hair. more ›

The Randy Moss saga continued to unfold on Monday and Tuesday. Despite Sunday's controversial comments from #81, the New England Patriots have gone completely vanilla. Gillette Stadium has turned into a love shack, baby. Moss loves New England, his coach, Tom Brady, and team owner Robert Kraft. Brady loves Moss. Kraft loves Moss, but not Logan Mankins. Bill Belichick loves Moss. more ›

Peter King reported on NBC that the Patriots have "finalized" a contract with Tom Brady that signs him through 2014. King cited Robert Kraft as his source and said the deal won't become official until it's filed with the NFL tomorrow. King said Kraft wouldn't discuss specifics. King said he expected the deal would make Brady the highest-paid player in league history at a cool $19 million. Nobody negotiates like Tom Brady. [SI.com] more ›

Fans of American Football in London won't see a textbook example of the sport when the New England Patriots play the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. If the game on display isn't something the league really wants on display - unless the NFL loves potentially one-sided games - then that leaves this year's London game as a means to promote the league through its stars. In other words, Tom Brady. That's what Mike Reiss theory is, and he believes Brady has embraced that theory, too. That would explain the sight of Brady in a suit surrounded by teammates in their casual team gear. It might explain more detailed, emphatic answers to media inquiries instead of the usual Belichick-speak we are treated to. more ›

When Josh Beckett stomped off the mound after the fourth inning, he sure looked mad about something. Perhaps Beckett was realizing that he is done pitching against Atlanta for the balance of the 2009 season. Beckett (9-3) stopped the Braves cold, again, this time with seven shutout innings, six hits and six strikeouts as the Red Sox beat the Braves, 8-2. Beckett pitched 16 scoreless innings against Atlanta this year. Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Paplebon closed the game out. Both were adequate, at best, as Paplebon served up a home run to someone named David Ross, who exists and played eight games for Boston in 2008. more ›

Let's give a hand to the Boston Red Sox: they're on the cutting edge. During a late (to us, anyway) Friday night game in Seattle, the team continued to show fans the new dance craze that's poised to sweep the (Red Sox) Nation: the Third Base Shuffle. It's easier than the Frug, more athletic than the Lean Back and only slightly more annoying to witness than the Macarena. All you have to do is wind... more ›

Today it seems like anyone can get an honorary degree. Even Pats owner Robert Kraft got one at this year's UMass-Boston graduation. But some honorary degrees get sticky. For example, twenty years ago, Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe received an honorary degree at UMass. Today, UMass trustees are reconsidering their decision today. According to the Globe, "the Undergraduate Student Senate at UMass-Boston unanimously passed a request to retract the degree." And for good reason. Although he... more ›

--New England Patriots player Marquise Hill died last night after a jet ski accident. While jet skiing in Lake Ponchartrain, Louisiana, he and a woman "hit a wave and fell off." Hill, a defensive end, rescued the woman, who couldn't swim. He got her to a pylon, but then he vanished as a boat tried to reach him. Numerous agencies tried to find him, but, unfortunately, the Coast Guard called off the search for Hill... more ›

Bostonist was walking past the hustle and bustle of Fenway Park on Friday afternoon when we finally identified that nagging feeling that had been with us ever since the Park Street station. We had seen more Baltimore Orioles jerseys, hats and T-shirts in an hour than we saw all day when we traveled to Camden Yards last season! What was going on? Everyone knows that the orange-accented Baltimore ballpark is known fondly in Red Sox... more ›

Bostonist knows... Bostonist knows... Spring Training is wrapping up, and the boys of summer are due north in a couple weeks time, so most of this space will be dedicated to our beloved Red Sox over the next few months. But, Bostonist has some unfinished business with the New England Patriots organization, Head Coach Bill Belichick, and owner Robert Kraft. As all Bostonists are now aware, the Pats lost some pretty large parts this... more ›

Ever since Patriots owner Robert Kraft gave Russian President Vladimir Putin his Super Bowl Championship Ring, to look at, Bostonist has been resorting to our childhood phrase: "see with your eyes not with your hands." Kraft made a statement on patriots.com yesterday afternoon that the ring was, in fact, a gift to the Russian President, and not a misinterpreted gesture. No word from Vladi on how he might return the favor to Kraft. Perhaps with... more ›

Every time he’s out in public the Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft has one of those blue button down shirts with the white collar and cuffs. Bostonist appreciates this look only on men who have grey or white hair. Tom Brokaw was able to pull this look off, but we wouldn’t think of asking Matt Lauer or Brian Williams to attempt it. Anyone under 50 looks a little funny in these shirts. Bostonist doesn’t really... more ›
