Bye-Bye 'BCN: 104.1's Last Gasp of Rock

WBCN (104.1FM) is concluding their four-day farewell as a rock radio station. Technically a sports station will appear tomorrow at 98.5 as WBZ on the FM dial (while music will still be heard on the web and as a secondary HD-radio channel), but it is truly the final day for this radio institution after more than 40 years.

A year ago, at a benefit for T.T. the Bear's bartender Jeanne Sheehy, the members of Letters to Cleo took the stage for an impromptu reunion, and they could tell from the reaction of the crowd that people were happy to see them. This year, they're back for a real reunion, playing 4 gigs in 3 cities.

--Adam Gaffin of Universal Hub was on NPR this week to discuss Boston Crime, which tracks violent crime on a Google map and allows people to comment on cases. A must-listen. They describe him as a "computer guy by day, crime chronicler by night." [NPR]

There are some bands that you can go years listening to their studio albums, but you will never understand the very essence of their existence until you see the live show. It sounds a bit dramatic, but is entirely true of Liars, who've continued to garner either high praise or loathe from the entire scale of music critics - Rolling Stone magazine to the adolescent consumer on a message board. Now stationed in Los Angeles, the Australian foursome released their fourth and eponymous LP, and have arguably collected more acclaim than their well-received debut, They Threw Us All In A Trench And Stuck A Mountain On Top from 2002.

Obama? Clinton? Romney? Huckabee? Are you getting them all mixed up right about now? Try to get untangled because today is Super Tuesday and the Massachusetts Presidential Primary. Vote so you can at least weed a few of these candidates out.

--Haven't you always wanted to go to an event called HARVAPALOOZA? Well, now you can. Local band The Franklin Kite bring a special combination of musical prowess and astrophysics knowledge to Tommy Doyle's, where they'll play alongside Maya and The Trolleys to commemorate the palooza that is Harvard. Or something like that? Anyway, the show starts at 9 and it's totally free. A dance party will follow, so put your best foot forward. Hopefully it's not the left.

Victoria Beckham is a style icon with Hermes bag collection that would make most women green with envy. It’s also fitting that she would make an appearance on Wednesday promoting her jeans & sunglasses collection right before her other gig that night. For those of you who don’t know, she sometimes sings with this pop group from the UK, ever hear of them? Spice something?

--In a show rescheduled from September, Blonde Redhead will provide art-damage rock, and maybe some literal damage. Really. The last time Bostonist saw this band, they were crashing into each other onstage. DCist spoke to Kazu Makino about their album's name (23) and a few other things. The Paradise Rock Club, 7:00 pm, $20.

If Elvis Presley were still alive, he’d be turning 73 today. In honor of the King, one of J.P. Licks' flavors of the month is banana ice cream with hand-swirled peanut butter, inspired by the ingredients in his favorite deep-fried sandwich. Never ones to turn down an excuse to eat ice cream, even in January, Bostonist tried out "Elvis’ Favorite." We have to hand it to J.P. Licks: Their ice cream impersonations are always dead on. (Sometimes with frightening results.) The banana flavor is strong, and perfectly complimented by the sweet, salty, smooth ribbons of peanut butter. The only way it could be closer to Elvis’ famous sandwich is if it was deep fried. But it’s great as it is, a perfect high-calorie tribute to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Photo by Lisa Scanlon.

The King's birthday is today! All hail Elvis! Dick's Last Resort, where they tend to celebrate everything Elvis, will be hosting a birthday bash including an Elvis Impersonator contest and a jelly-donut eating contest. Faneuil Hall. 6:00 pm.

Update: The Glock-toter will be arraigned this morning in East Boston District Court. The DA's Office said his case was "admittedly banal" compared to all the other cases going on.

Christopher Guest - actor, director, writer, musician, and Grammy-winning composer - stood solemn in his academic regalia on Friday night as a packed Berklee Performance Center crowd gave him a standing ovation. Guest told a story of a young boy, one who grew up in...

The Globe reports that the Milky Way will remain open through Monday, pending a court hearing. The Jamaica Plain bar and night club, one of three in Boston closed for failing to install fire sprinklers, won an injunction from Suffolk Superior Court last night. It reportedly came too late to prevent the cancellation of one event, the Rock 'N' Roll Fashion Show. The bar has requested a one-year extension from state fire officials for installing...

Few things in this state offer so much buildup with so little payoff as Plymouth Rock. It's famous, it's historic (well, kind of), it's enclosed in a grand and stately pavilion, and people run towards it with eyes aglow and camera readied, and...it's a rock. In some sand. It's not even a particularly big rock.
