Remember that so-called "Super Committee" Congress created when the debt ceiling was raised, the one designed to come up with a plan to cut the deficit? Senator John Kerry is allegedly one of three Democratic Senators on the committee. Majority leader Harry Reid (D-NV) apparently picked Kerry and Senators Patty Murray of Washington state and Max Baucus of Montana. The committee will include six Democrats and six Republican, three Senators and Congressme from each party. The committee must recommend at least $1.5 trillion worth of deficit reduction to Congress for an up-or-down vote or steep spending cuts will automatically take effect.

Four Massachusetts residents died yesterday after a series of storms suddenly spawned tornadoes that swept through the state on Wednesday. The four deaths were in West Springfield (two), one in Springfield, and one in Brimfield. The killer storms took place in a 3-4 hour span and the entire state faced the threat of a tornado. A surprising amount of damage was spread around in 19 cities and towns in Western and Central Massachusetts as trees and buildings and cars were thrown every direction and, in cases, destroyed.

Senator John Kerry can't get out of his own. The stupid yacht/tax controversy he created was just the latest gaffe that obscured his legislative work.
When Bostonist heard about Senator John Kerry's tax flap with his yacht, we laughed. Who didn't?
Senator John Kerry won't be getting a tax break from his new $7 million yacht, unless he deserves one. Kerry planned to stash Isabel in Rhode Island, a state with no sales and excise taxes since 1993, and cited "long-term maintenance, upkeep and charter purposes" as the reason to do so. Tonight, the Globe reports Kerry said he'll pay all taxes he owes to Massachusetts. We need a press statement for this? Apparently. We are thrilled that Kerry will do what we all have to do. It's hard to imagine he, or someone else he pays, didn't know the applicable tax rules in this case. [Globe]
People, so many people, mostly young people, people everywhere. There were so many people waiting in line for Senator Barack Obama's rally at the Seaport World Trade Center last night that the campaign turned the queue into a phone bank, handing out lists of voters and asking people to use their cell phones to plead for support. There were so many people waiting in the cold that a nearby Dunkin' Donuts had to prematurely close its doors after it sold every ounce of coffee in stock. So many people.

But not everyone will be able to see it.

The Globe published a long piece about the mystery still surrounding Army specialist Ciara Durkin's death in Afghanistan in late September. Durkin, who was from Quincy, was shot in the head, although the Army called it a "non-combat-related incident." Her family is not satisfied with that explanation, and the Globe report provides evidence that someone on the base may have had it out for Durkin. In one event, Durkin wrote an e-mail saying, "Ok. so...
The death of Ciara Durkin, Quincy resident and member of the National Guard in Afghanistan, is gaining widespread attention because of questions surrounding her death. After saying that Durkin died in combat, the Pentagon has said that she did not die in combat, but she was actually shot in the head while on a secure base. Her family announced yesterday that Army investigators met with them for four hours on Wednesday to reassure them that...

Democrats seem to be coming out of the woodwork to announce their plans to be contenders in the 2008 presidential election. Senator John Kerry made a different step today and announced that he'll be seeking re-election to his senate seat rather than a shot at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. It was a positive, politically crafted message. He's running for re-election, it wasn't an announcement that he would not be running for President. In his missive to...

Sure a bit of a stretch for a rhyme, but Bostonist thought it prudent put something up here about the latest union news. Anecdotal evidence suggests that unions are quite popular in Boston. Many of Bostonist’s friends are in several different unions in the area, a couple are even those crazy union organizers. Chicagoist writes today that the Teamsters, the United Food and Commercial Workers, and UNITE HERE are boycotting the organized labor conglomerate AFL-CIO. The boycott threatens to partition the united front of the AFL-CIO. Nearly 14 million workers in the United States and Canada in the AFL-CIO have banded together and provide endorsement support to local causes as well as Massachusetts Senator John Kerry last year in his bid for President. With the boycott, a third of the membership will be dropping out of the largest union.
