Gothamist learned about the craziest urban nightmare come true: A huge python found in the bathroom pipes. It was also a nightmare for some Yankees fans, as manger Joe Torre declined to come back and manage the Bronx Bombers. At least the city's attempt to give some direction to subway riders was interesting, pranksters went shirtless at the Fifth Avenue Abercrombie & Fitch and the I Heart Brooklyn Girls calendars came out. And just... more ›

As it gets closer to Halloween for LAist, a contributer recollects her tale of staring down the serial killer, Richard Ramirez, otherwise known as the Night Stalker. Must think happy thoughts -- okay, free organic chocolate chip cookies for Los Angeles -- now that's a happy thought. Other happy Los Angeles thoughts include an interview with Jack Kehler of The Big Lebowski (he was the Dude's landlord), a beautiful and magical photographic moment in Venice... more ›

LAist began the month with a new food series exploring the popular and unknown late-night eats around town. If a Top Chef winner opened up a late-night spot in Los Angeles, denizens would flock to it, yet the LA Times and other media might be wary. Turning to sports, the Dodger season was quite memorable in the way that it imploded and the LA County Sheriff's Department made some games of their own such as... more ›

This week, Phillyist saw the waters of a landmark fountain run red for a Showtime marketing stunt, the Phils pull ahead, and some serious nostalgia. They also got a chance to review an awesome tribute album, reminded folks to see the King and appreciated their beautiful skyline. Chicagoist knows what it's like to like the Cubs. But naming your kid Wrigley Fields? At least they can breathe a little easier now that Grossman's out and... more ›

Happy first weekend of September - and happy Labor Day weekend, too, for our American cities! Let's take a look at what's been happening around the Ist-a-verse. The deaths of two firefighters shook Bostonist this week. Boston's firefighters bent over backwards all week long - first, they fought flames pouring from the Boston Tea Party museum, and then a restaurant fire killed two and injured many more. Their efforts make everything else - like Tom... more ›

We at the Gothamist network would like to express our heartfelt wishes to the people of Minnesota in the days after their tragic bridge collapse. We're not trying to discount the severity of the accident by making note of it in opposition to our usual -Ist lightheartedness - we just wanted to take a moment and recognize those affected last week. After the Minneapolis bridge collapse, Bostonist did some research and found that Massachusetts bridges... more ›

While SFist cringed at the fatal dose of crime littering the Bay Area, it found solace in Hillary Clinton's San Francisco campaign headquarters opening, which featured loads of exposed mammary glands. In other news, SF Taxi Commission ruled that Satan's cab must keep its (in)famous medallion number, 666; and in an un-fashion-forward frenzy, San Francisco Fashion Week (chortle) bars bloggers from covering and getting smashed at their shows and parties, respectively. Also, they found a... more ›

This week ended with the launch of the seventh and final Harry Potter installation. But while the world was consumed with Pottermania, it's important to remember that there were more serious things going on in the world, too - two of them in -Ist cities. Sampaist was shocked when a passenger jet crashed into the center of Sao Paulo, killing at least 200 people. The airplane, an Airbus A320, skidded off the runway at the... more ›

Banner week for SFist as the site's new editor introduced himself -- hooray for Brock! While the NY Times weighed in on SF's mayoral race, only SFist had the (insert tongue firmly into cheek) hard-hitting latest on candidate/activist Josh Wolf. Coverage of a protest vs. gentrification spawned a fantastic debate amongst SFist's readers. Finally, from the sublime to the ridiculous: video of a man that confused a Board of Supes meeting with "open mic... more ›

LAist was comped front row seats by the Dodgers due to Malingering being struck by a foul ball last week, and she came back with some great photos, and earlier made fun of 4th of July on Venice Beach. But the biggest stories of the week was that the Mayor's Hot Tamale was revealed, and that a Kwik-E-Mart was erected in Burbank. Phillyist was busy doing the Fourth of July up right, exercising their... more ›

Once upon a time, in a land that was starting to feel far, far away, Manny Ramierez used to hit home runs. Big, deep, towering shots that left Red Sox fans cheering like mad and opposing pitchers more than a little nervous when #24 stepped up to the plate. more ›

Happy Father's Day! For those of you who have dads, are dads, or know dads, this one's for you, from all of us at the Gothamist network. It was a week of bizarre, embarassing headlines at DCist. The trial of the local administrative law judge who sued his cleaners for $54 million over a pair of missing pants left everyone shaking their heads. Then the capital city was nearly brought to its knees, twice, by... more ›

For the Super Bowl, this Bostonist is going with Da Bears, just because they're the ones who didn't knock us out of the game. And Bears coach Lovie Smith has a name custom-made for punny headlines. The -Ist-a-Verse, when not busy with other important issues, such as the sex life of the mayor (no, not Mayor Menino, SF mayor Newsom!) or that danged ATHF "meat wad," has been gearing up for the Super Bowl. Of... more ›

Bruins 4, NY Islanders 5 - The Islanders won in a shootout. Bostonist knows it's not the guy's fault, but it's pretty funny that the Islanders have a player whose last name is Satan. There's nothing like scanning the morning headlines and seeing the words "Satan scored …" underneath last night's hockey news. more ›

Let's take a look back at a week that raised this Zen koan: if Kevin Federline got into a wrestling ring with a wrestler, who would you root for? Austinist was in an entertainment state of mind as they covered the dickens out of the Austin Film Festival, depicted all the Big 12 football coaches as South Park characters, and interviewed Jose Gonzalez. Chicagoist talked about the passion as they bid adieu to Bell's... more ›

As we sat down to write this week's Best of the -ists post, a car blaring "21 Questions'" passed by our house. And that started us thinking about how some of the best -ist posts out there have at their hearts questions, some of which are answered, and some of which are left open. Check out the Best of the -ists from this week, and see if you agree. more ›

The collegiate population may deem Thursdays "Thirsty Thursdays", but as a majority of them have departed our fine city for internships in New York, jobs back home, or foreign lands - we here at Bostonist HQ have come to view Thursday as dance night. As such, here is a brief rundown of just a few of your Thursday night options. Bostonist favorites, Next Generation Productions, are holding it down at their usual Thursday night... more ›

So after we walked by the store, we recalled hearing about this local designer that was recently copied by the hipster mega-chain, Urban Outfitters. It seems that Johnny Cupcakes approached Urban about carrying some of their tees in their stores. Urban passed on the offer and instead used the design for their own t-shirt. The proof is in the pudding...or cupcake for that matter. more ›

We'll call it hit or miss. Some weeks are totally on and our agenda's are filled to the brim with great stuff. Some weeks we're pulling together a bunch of shows and thinking that the list of "go see" music is surprisingly spare. Just like the weather is wonderful an warm some weeks and gloomy others. This week we've collected a number of selections that will bring some sunshine to your gloomy day - or... more ›

Seattlest saw a house party get senselessly attacked with a shotgun and end in seven dead. A local senator is debated and their version of the big dig is investigated. To truly get to the bottom of it they interview the writer Jonathan Raban. Bostonist has its first birthday party and investigates how to attach more gambling dollars to the Red Sox. Benjamin Franklin is celebrated and Johnny Damon is not. Image by Ethan Bagley... more ›

Since limited edition t-shirts are "so hot right now", Bostonist can think of nothing better to take our minds off that post-St. Patty's Day hangover than checking out the Legends of Style: ICONS event at the BCA this Saturday, March 18 from 8 pm - 1 am. "ICONS will showcase artwork from more than 30 artists and designers from across the country. This time around, Future Classic [the event's host,] decided to add a... more ›

Is it too weird for Bostonist to report the doings of other -ists? Perhaps, but we noticed something unsettling about SFist and Seattlest today, and thought we'd share: SFist yesterday ran a lengthy news story about a developing case of sex slavery in Berkeley involving a wealthy SF real estate tycoon. The previous day, Seattlest ran a story about how bad the Mariners are (Bostonist likes that sort of story). But here's what's strange: Sfist's picture of the sex-slaver and the picture accompanying Seattlest's baseball story, purportedly depicting Mariners reliever Julio Mateo, ARE CLEARLY PICTURES OF THE SAME PERSON. Stranger still, the authors of the two stories, SFist editor Jackson West and Seattlest sports nerd Seth Kolloen, ARE FRIENDS FROM COLLEGE! (That's true - we went to school with them.) Bostonist doesn't know what to make of all this, but we are definitely suspicious. more ›
