The whole season is on the line today for the Celtics. After losing 98-90 in overtime to the Heat on Wednesday to fall behind 3-1 in the series, Boston is in Miami tonight and faces the first of three elimination games.
As Shaquille O'Neal allegedly readies to play Saturday night - Celtics coach Doc Rivers says the Big DNP is playing; we'll believe it when we see it - in game three of the Eastern Conference semifinals against Miami, Channel 5 and JC Monahan brought us a glimpse into his home life.
Bostonist has a confession. We wanted to see the Celtics play the Heat in the playoffs. It goes without saying that we hope/expect that the Celtics beat Miami, too. Rajon Rondo is quite possibly the key player in the series. As for Shaquille O'Neal, well, when Celtics president Danny Ainge says he can't go "12 minutes," how much can be expected?
A day after Tim Thomas was named a finalist for the 2010-11 Vezina Trophy, he went out and proved why he's up for the title of top NHL goalie. Thomas held off Montreal into a second overtime until Nathan Horton's score lifted Boston to a 2-1 victory and a 3-2 series lead that was highly improbable a few days ago.
After losing seven straight road games, the Red Sox beat Oakland, 5-3, yesterday for the team's first road win. Kevin Youkilis, Jed Lowrie, and J.D. Drew each homered in the win. Sox starter Clay Buchholz gave up one run, in the first, and six hits in 5.1 innings for his first win of the season. Red Sox relievers Bobby Jenks and Jonathan Papelbon each allowed one run. Papelbon had his third save. Daniel Bard allowed one hit in 1.2 innings.
There are many questions about the 3-10 Red Sox of 2011. One of them isn't Josh Beckett, who earned his second win this season with a dominating performance in a 4-1 win over Toronto on Saturday. Beckett (2-1) struck out nine and allowed just three hits and one run in seven innings.
Rajon Rondo's #9 jersey ranks as the third-best selling National Basketball Association game shirt. Of course, Miami's LeBron James has the top spot wrapped up, and Kobe Bryant is second.

Depite losing Shaquille O'Neal to a calf injury in the first half, the Celtics crushed Detroit in the second half for a 101-90 decision over the Pistons. The Green led 49-48 at the half and put the game away in the third by outscoring Detroit 33-18.
If Bostonist had said an April game against the Pistons would be a "must win" for the Celtics, nobody would have believed us. The Celtics coasted through March and are now looking up at Miami for the #2 playoff seed in the East. They need to win to close in on the Heat. However, with a 2-4 mark in their last six games, they simply need to play better regardless of their playoff seed.
The Spurs and the Celtics face each other tonight and each team is in much the same place. Both teams have struggled lately and look a bit ragged heading into the playoffs. There's an O'Neal in the Celtics lineup tonight! Jermaine O'Neal hasn't played since January and had knee surgery in February, and will give it a go tonight. Doc Rivers is glad to have another player back. "I think getting any guy back helps," said Rivers. "Especially a guy with size, that always helps." Danny Ainge said Shaquille O'Neal could play Sunday or Tuesday.
The Celtics (50-21) gave up a 66-53 third-quarter lead and lost to the Chalotte Bobcats by an 83-81 score, the team's sixth loss in their last 10 games. Paul Pierce scored 18 points to lead all scorers. Kevin Garnett scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Ray Allen finished with 14. Allen and Garnett both missed late shots to seal Charlotte's win.
We last saw the Celtics in Milwaukee where they won, barely, 89-83. Boston put the game away, despite a shorthanded roster, with a 46-33 surge in the second half. Paul Pierce scored 23 points. New guy Nenad Rstic added 17 and Kevin Garnett finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Bruins tangle with Montreal tonight in Canada with an eye on first place. They're in a three-way tie for second place with 84 points with Washington and Pittsburgh. A win today and a Flyers loss to Edmonton in regulation puts Boston in first place.
Shaquille O'Neal, the Big DNP, hasn't played for 12 games due to his inflamed right Achilles and is out at least one more game. Dustin Pedroia came out of Saturday's game against the Florida Marlins, changed and bought three hot dogs at a concession stand.
Danny Ainge strikes again with some unexpected trading of Celtics players. The biggest deal involved sending Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson to Oklahoma City for Jeff Green, Nenad Krstic and a first-round draft choice in 2012. Green was chosen with the pick traded to Seattle in the Ray Allen deal.
Shaq revealed to Emily Rooney - really, the "Emily Rooney Show" on WGBH - that he wants to be levitated over the TD Garden and asked Criss Angel to help pull the trick off. It was really an interview with girlfriend Nicole “Hoopz” Alexander to promote her new reality show.
Shaquille O'Neal was 20-year old rookie in 1992-93. He's a month shy of his 39th birthday and knows his career has transitioned to a role player as he enters the final stages of a Hall-of-Fame career. Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports writes that Shaq has long since cemented his legacy and accepts what Doc Rivers and the Celtics want from him. Shaq is quite comfortable in Boston, too. He's ensconsed in Sudbury with girlfriend Nikki "Hoopz" Alexander.
Bostonist considers today's Celtics-Lakers game to be appointment basketball. We don't buy that there's a revenge factor for Boston after losing in the 2010 NBA Finals. But, losing that game forced the team to add to their bench - Shaquille O'Neal - and that is a factor today.
The 2011 agrees with the Boston Celtics. The guys in green are 9-2 in January after taking their fifth straight win last night from the Utah Jazz, 110-86.
The Celtics host the Orlando Magic in short order tonight and they're going for their third straight win. Kevin Garnett returns after a leg injury benched him since December 29. After nine games out, Doc Rivers says KG will start and has no restrictions. Orlando beat Boston on Christmas Day, 86-78, and is 9-2 in their last 11 games. Shaquille O'Neal starts, too.

Nashoba Valley probably thought all of that snow was the best thing for their business this winter. And then Shaquille O'Neal walked through the door with his tube. Shaq knows sledding, or tubing. Shaq took his kids sledding at Nashoba Valley with his friend Nicole "Hoopz" Alexander for some festive snow frolics. Shaq refused to let Nashoba Valley pay for the snacks. Shaq on a tube must be the greatest PR photo in the history of Nashoba Valley.
Bostonist loves animals. And 2010 was filled with the creatures we share the planet with making news. Three stood out above the rest.
But, the Patriots defense stood tall in Buffalo by forcing seven turnovers in Sunday's 34-3 win, a decision that wrapped up the AFC East title and delivered home-field advantage to the 13-2 squad.
Shaquille O'Neal conducted the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall tonight. Shaq took Keith Lockhart's baton for three songs: "Sleigh Ride," "Can You Feel It," and "We Are The Champions." Shaq dressed in tails for the performance and said it was tougher than dancing against Justin Bieber on "Shaq Vs." [Globe], [WCVB]
