The MBTA has released crime statistics for the first half of the year. Violent crime is slightly down, but crime rates are up when theft is taken into account. From the report: "There were a reported 154 incidents of violent crime, which includes robberies, rapes, and aggravated assaults, on MBTA property from January to June 2008 compared to 174 incidents for 2007, representing an 11% drop in violent crimes. Aggravated assaults alone were down 31%. There have been no homicides this year. [No homicides--but at least four deaths. -Ed.] ...there was an increase in the crime of larceny from 229 incidents in 2007 to 305 incidents for the six month period in 2008... Part I crime, which includes aggravated assaults, auto theft, burglary, homicide, rape, larceny, and robbery has risen by 8%. 37% of the robberies involved the theft of Sidekicks... reported incidents of people being touched inappropriately also climbed. There were 38 such incidents reported for the first six months of this year compared to 17 incidents during the same time period last year... There have been 12 arrests or court action taken thus far in 2008 compared with 5 in 2007." Several hundred incidents and 12 arrests--that's a little worrying.
