Bite Size News, October 16: Scary Fiscal News Edition

A $600 million budget gap could lead to trimming 2,000 state jobs, not to mention other cost-cutting measures. [Boston Globe]...The Mass. unemployment rate jumped to 9.2% in September, which might mean the Bay State is still in a recession. [Boston Herald]...Potential amendments to the state's transportation reform bill could eliminate some of the saving that was the purpose of the reforms. [Boston Herald]

Photo of the Day, March 10, 2009: State

Streetsim has given us this photo of a snowy day on Boston Common. We like the strong foreground feature of the fountain, and the way the snow obscures the State House gives added depth to the photo.

Photo of the Day, March 02, 2009: Snow on the Zakim

With the current snow emergency we decided to bring you a shot from erinhart00 who gives us this beautiful black and white. We love the way the curves of the foreground contrast against the straight lines of the background. Add to that the softness of the snow and water against the hard steel and concrete and we think this is just wonderful.

Photo of the Day, February 25, 2009: Bridge over Water

Frequent contributor The.D80.project did a great job on this photograph taken in the Boston Public Garden. Normally we see pictures of this area filled with swan boats and people lounging in the summer sun, but this symmetrical piece reminds us of how beautiful our city is even in the middle of winter.

Photo of the Day, February 04, 2009: 6 more weeks..

If you ask Bostonist reader Teenytinyturkey whether or not the Marmota monax groundhog known as Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, we believe you'd get an astounding yes. This photo, with its classical style, is the perfect capture of a scene that occurs daily throughout New England this time of year.

Terrifying Precipitation Now Even More Terrifying

The Globe alerted us to the terror of snow last week. Now, the paper has discovered yet another way in which snow threatens us all: sledding.

Photo of the Day, January 15: Snow Bites Dog

Well, not really, but this is a nicely framed photo by primefocus of two friends enjoying the snow together—and the dog's expression is priceless. More snow is on its way, so get your cameras ready.

Each week Boston is dedicated to bringing you the most viral Boston-based videos.

  • White flakes are falling from the sky. They are wet and cold. What is this strange substance, surely never before seen in New England? One theory: "snow." And we might get 10 inches of it. [Globe]
  • James Aloisi is our new transportation secretary. [Herald]
  • Sovereign Bank, recently bought by Banco Santander, is going to cut over 100 jobs. [WBZTV]

We mentioned the tweets. Now, the websites. If the snow outside (which has actually started now) isn't enough for you, you can make it snow on your computer, too, with SNOWPOCALYPSE. Refresh the site for other fun ways to refer to today's flurries. Our favorite so far may be SNOWNAMI. If that becomes tiring, go the Barack Obama route. Barack Obama... dug you out of the snow? Maybe tomorrow. (Thanks to commenter/Flickrer iMatthew for the tip.)

Well, it was inevitable. A Twitter group has been set up to tweet about today's (as-yet nonexistent) snow. If you're stuck in the house with nothing better to do, or if you're out and about and looking for updates, check the group for the latest snow scoop. Want to participate? Add #snow1219 to your twits—er, tweets. UHub has coined the phenomenon Snowtweeting. There are also Utterli and Flickr groups, as well as a snow poll for those who can't get enough snow-based internet action. That's a lot of stuff about very little snow (so far), and there have already been blog post cancellations to boot.

--Snow? Tomorrow morning? Surely you jest. We were hoping this long winter was over. Silly us. [WBZ]

--The state owes snow plow operators $69 million for their work. Now that's a way to thank them for keeping our roads clean. The state has already--ahem--plowed through its snow-plow budget due to the abundance of snow this year. Sorry. Couldn't resist. [Boston Globe]

--More fire department turmoil: A panel of union firefighters determined that the alcohol and drugs found in the bodies of firefighters Paul Cahill and Warren Payne in August's Tai Ho Restaurant blaze did not cause their deaths. But the fire commissioner begs to differ. [Boston Globe, background: Bostonist]

Much to the dismay of many of us out there, we can thank that overgrown rat from Pennsylvania for six more weeks of winter. Now while this might prove many people’s point that nothing good comes out of that state, Punxsutawney Phil's response means four more weeks of bad weather and dry indoor heating that will take a toll on your skin. But the Bostonist is here to help. We know your pain, so we did some research and found some of the best products to help you combat the winter elements.

--The State Supreme Judicial Court just overturned the conviction of a Methuen ex-police officer accused of raping a woman in 2000. The case hinged on whether or not lawyers could prove the woman was "too intoxicated to consent, not that she was merely high and drunk." However, the SJC felt that the trial judge didn't give proper instructions to the jurors. The ex-officer will get a new trial. [Boston Globe]

--Another "wintry mix" is already heading into town this evening to smack you in the face and mess up your drive home. Whoopee. [WBZ]

--The city of Boston is lawyering up big-time for an expected suit from Shawn Drumgold, a man wrongly convicted of the 1989 murder of a 12-year-old. Drumgold spent 15 years behind bars. [Boston Globe]

We love this great birds-eye view shot from walknboston. This is a view of downtown not often seen (anyone know where it could be from?), and the snow cover over the city really adds a layer of beauty. The over-all green tones are fantastic and the light at the base of the Hancock perfectly completes the scene.

--Yet another explanation for why you should have a sinking feeling in your tummy any time you go over a bridge in Massachusetts. [Boston Herald]

--Dr. Judah Folkman, who found a new way of fighting cancer by cutting off blood supply to tumors, died yesterday. [Boston Globe]
