Bostonist Interviews Mason Jennings, Scheduled to Play Somerville Theatre Thursday

Tomorrow night, hippie-folk rocker Mason Jennings will grace the stage at the Somerville Theater with indie songstress Anni Rossi. Shockingly, there are still tickets available, so take advantage of this opportunity. Dubbed “one of the best acoustic-based singer-songwriters you’ve never heard” by Rolling Stone, Jennings most recently released Blood of Man. On this, his eighth album, Jennings takes a new direction by incorporating electric guitar, drums, and distortion. Mason took some time while touring for a phone conversation with Bostonist, talking about our great city, his doodles, and his favorite psychic waitress. He was beyond polite, calling five minutes early and telling his sick interviewer to feel better.

A New Alchemy: Os Mutantes at Somerville Theater

Onstage last night at the Somerville Theater, Os Mutantes looked remarkably young for a 40-year-old band. The Brazilian pop alchemists, who were at the center of Brazil's Tropicália cultural uprising, had performed a new transmutation—this time, on themselves.

What would you expect a St. Vincent show to be like? If last time was any indication, we could've anticipated a "sweet-tart voice" interspersed with "accomplished freakouts" on guitar. As Pitchfork put it, St. Vincent (real name: Annie Clark) projects "an aura of eerie perfection"; she's "beautiful, poised, good-humored, and well-adjusted to a degree uncommon for rock performers." And Clark's impeccable persona isn't limited to the music. She's as beautiful as her voice would lead you to expect. The name of her website is impossibly precious: http://www.ilovestvincent.com/. She even tweets about Barthes. Come on!

Before U2 and their army of fans annexed Davis Square, a quieter sect made its pilgrimage to the Somerville Theatre. Just thawed from a five-year hibernation and scarcely sighted in North America, Tindersticks played songs from last year's The Hungry Saw and a smattering of older material, hungrily lapped up by Saturday evening's crowd. (At one point, we're pretty sure we heard audience members shushing each other like cartoon librarians.)

U2 is in Davis Square. God Save Us All.

U2 is now in the Somerville Theatre, having received a warm welcome from Somerville residents and gawkers gathered to watch the Irish band arrive.

The U2 411: Bono and Company in Davis Square

The crews setting up for tonight's U2 performance at the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square arrived early Tuesday morning and probably won't be loading out until late tonight. If you are one of those wondering how the arrival of U2 in Davis is going to affect things - and whether you're going to be able to get into this no longer even remotely secret show - here's the information you're going to need.

The Letter U and the Numeral 2 in Davis Square

After weeks of ridiculous silence, the Irish band U2 has finally let people know where it will be playing tomorrow. It's the Somerville Theatre, as many have suspected all along. Bostonist reader Ben Privett caught a glimpse of the crew loading in to the theater.

Ben Kweller's mama is among a growing number of mothers who did not heed the advice made famous by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings back in 1978: don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys.

You could always shell out 90 smackers for a front row seat to Boston Ballet's annual production of Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker." You'll get a nice plushy red seat at the Opera House, and be treated to the usual saccharine parade of sugar plum fairies, mouse soldiers, and marzipan shepherds.

Tonight, 8pm

As mentioned in today's Happenings, Jonathan Richman's show at the Somerville Theatre is sold out tonight, but a little bird told us that a dozen or so standing-room tickets will be made available today. The Somerville Theatre box office opens at 4:00 pm, and the tickets probably won't last long.

Bad art is great... for you to poop near! It seems one Museum of Bad Art isn't enough to meet Massachusetts' demand for the utterly artless, so the Somerville Theatre is adding an installation of bad art near its downstairs restrooms. The next time you need to pee during a movie, take solace in the fact that even though you'll probably be missing the best part of the film, at least you'll have the chance to experience some remarkable artwork. Those who don't order large sodas and/or have bladders of steel will have something fascinating to look at while waiting in line for the facilities after the show.

The last word that should be used to describe Boston is "cheap," but housing prices compared to New York City's are a steal. The cellist for the Magnetic Fields, Sam Davol, has moved his family up to a new pad in Boston's Chinatown above Jumbo Seafood Restaurant. Of course, "cheap" is relative. The New York Times did a piece on how Davol and his spouse decided a move to Boston would allow them to quit...

Cult classic Road House, featuring Patrick Swayze as a philosophy-spouting bouncer, is running at the Somerville Theater this weekend.
