Lawrence police arrested two men who staged a five-hour standoff after allegedly robbing a liquor store, attempting to flee, and taking hostages. Police responded to McCann’s Liquors on South Union Street around noon on Sunday after a 911 call reported seeing people running from the store. Seeing police, SWAT, and K-9 officers, the suspects tried to flee but were blocked by a locked gate and returned to the store. They ended up in a crawlspace where police captured them, money, possibly stolen from the store, and guns. Four customers were trapped in the store for hours. Store owner Arturo Taveras, 67, suffered head injuries, and needed 37 stitches, after he was hit in the head with a gun. An assembled crowd cheered as the suspects were led away by police. The suspects, both of Dorchester, are charged with armed robbery and kidnapping, and other charges, and are held without bail until a March 16 court date. [MyFoxBoston.com], [Globe], [WCVB]
