St. Patrick's day is upon us and as they say; today everyone is Irish. Apparently that also extends far beyond the reaches of earth and on to such places as Tatooine, Coruscant, Polis Massa, and maybe even a Death Star or two. As is tradition, the Galactic Empire sent down some stormtrooper, snowtroopers, and biker scouts to help South Boston celebrate this holiday. We appreciate Darth Sidious allowing his fun side to show, and we're glad that gnarayan was there to capture it.

--Now that Spatch has been rooming with a CW celebrity, perhaps he thought that another CW reality show, the mother-daughter beauty pageant extravaganza Crowned, might be as good. He was wrong. [Derspatchel]
Get 'em in. American Idol is over for this season, but the Popsearch is just beginning. The Boston Pops PopSearch2007 has extended the deadline until midnight tonight. In case you forgot to mail your entry into the talent competition, or you just now realize that you really want your moment in the spotlight, you've got about eleven hours to get it in. As we've mentioned before the ages old organization of the Boston Pops has...
With the sun out, the temperatures high, one can only think of one thing-- what's going on in the World of the -ist's? Bostonist dug deep to uncover Barack Obama's unpaid parking tickets, their Governor's latest ethical lapse, and a plagarizing sports writer. Chicagoist had everything in twos: two views on having the Olympics, losing two members of their Super Bowl team, and two music festivals. DCist put their noses in legal books as...
The Host will screen at Remis Auditorium at the MFA at 7:45 pm. The jewel in the crown of the MFA's Korean Film Festival is – surprise! – a monster movie. The plot reads like a standard monster mash in which a Seoul family must save a little girl from a mutant beast. However, the story starts when an American military officer dumps formaldehyde into the water supply, and political satire unfolds. The Globe raved...
We know that Franklin’s birthday was back in January. One of the founding fathers and the portrait on our favorite currency the Boston born Ben has been lost to our love of Star Wars. Bostonist feels like we need to take any opportunity to make good in remembering the electrifying, bifocal sporting, French-ambassadoring founding father in the year of the tercentennial anniversary of his birth her in the Hub. Today we take a ride with Enoty Prishli downtown to salute Franklin.
“I am your father,” a motion-sensing robot told Bostonist the other day. That bot and the rest of the Star Wars exhibit makes the jump from the Museum of Science into hyperspace on April 30th. Sure the Storm Troopers marching through Southie last weekend were great, we thought a day at the MoS would be better - and really let us experience the movies. Beyond motion-sensing, talking robots were models and costumes from the prequel and original trilogies, hands-on activities demonstrating principles behind hovercrafts and robot design, and, of course, an abundance of C-3PO muttering silly British things. While Bostonist has been a bit of a Star Wars geek for ages, the experience on the whole was a little underwhelming. The behind-the-scenes parts were swell, we marveled how actors must have all been sporting the Mick Jagger skinny in the late 70’s, judging from the costumes. “Technology” from Star Wars as current-day innovations was good in theory but robot displays left something to be desired. For example, Bostonist was wowed by a video clip of two teams of little dog robots playing soccer, but the real-life dog robot that followed the clip let out two pitiful barks and pushed a ball with its paw – it was nothing short of lame.
While some Bostonians get excited about Star Wars, there are others of us who would rather spend our hard-earned cash on something really important, like something from a big Swedish retailer. A few months ago, Bostonist was psyched that the Swedish retail powerhouse, IKEA, was opening in Stoughton this fall. Well, Wednesday, November 9 marks the opening day of our very own Massachusetts' IKEA. In order to draw a crowd, the store is promising $5,000 to the first person in line at 9:00a.m. opening day. Bostonist has only seen the truly devoted wait in line for days for Sox playoff tickets, but perhaps there is some cash-strapped person who will fight for the first place finish.
When Bostonist went through grade school Ben Franklin was the gold standard of inventor/kite-flyer, revolutionary, patriot, journalist, abolitionist and all-around model American. Born on Milk Street here in Boston in 1706, affection for Franklin and the many accomplishments in his life have long been used as a teaching tool for the Bay State chillins. Major news media is reporting today that Star Wars may usurp Franklin’s position. “Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination'' which will open tomorrow at the Museum of Science has been touted not only as a Star Wars fan’s wet dream but also a teaching tool about modern science. The $5 million exhibit displays parts of sets and costumes used in the six movies, the original trilogy and the more recent prequel trilogy. In the hands-on fashion that the Museum of Science uses in may of their exhibits people can build their own simple ‘Maglev’ trains which use magnetic propulsion while looking at some of the wicked cool space ships and hovercraft used in the Star Wars series.
The news of a massive movie house merger got Bostonist all worked up. Where will we go? How much will we pay? We’re already paying $15 to go see a movie at the MFA on opening night, and the Loews Boston Common gets close with their $10.25 weekend admission. The announcement today that AMC plans to acquire the Loews Cineplex theatres reminded us of when Shaw's and Star merged. Bostonist can’t really tell the theatres apart when we’re inside. It’s dark, the seats sit on an impressive rake, the sound is loud. Same with Shaws and Star, except they're well lit and flat floors. No word yet on potential name changes to the Loews and AMC complex, perhaps AMC will leave a couple Loews just to make us feel comfortable.
Last week the Imperial March and Star Wars Themes were at audible hum all around the hub as movie goers watched the final installment of the Star Wars prequel series. Rumors have been floating around about Lucas’ possible intentions to develop the prequel’s prequel. The buzz this week has shifted (or taken the ferry) to another John Williams score: the theme to Jaws. JawsFest was hosted by Martha’s Vineyard over the weekend celebrated the 30th anniversary of the release of Jaws, the movie which made the Vineyard into Amity Island and home to Bruce, the mechanical great white. Following around a replica of the mechanical shark were not only fans but rumors. Today Bostonist has heard not only about a Lucas prequel but a Speilberg sequel. Bostonist doesn’t usually listen to Hollywood gossip. In the rare case movie gossip involves the Bay State we like to think it might be true. We’re really looking forward to a Jaws 5, though we could just be dissapointed to learn that we saw it last year.
Bostonist went down to the Loews Boston Common last night to catch that space odyssey film that everyone has been talking about. Yeah, that’s right Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Much to our dismay the show had been cancelled in lieu of the little known Lucas film Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Honestly we really did go hoping to catch Hitchhiker, we even checked Fandango. Seeing as they still had a couple thousand seats left for the 8:40 p.m. show, five digital screenings ran all day, we thought we might check it out rather than wait for the overpriced DVD bundle to hit shelves in the trilogy form.
Sunday--end your week with Leslie Hall. She's playing the Milky Way in a super-stacked Truth Serum show with Cassette, Robo Sapien, and PAL. Bostonist wants to see Leslie and the LYs live becaue dang, their myspace page is both intriguing and confusing. Who is this hip hop lady? What are these "gold pants" and "gem sweaters"? Oh man.
Obviously the $250 ticket option is a stretch for Bostonist and friends, but we're sure some of you who have been pining for years over the whole "how did Darth Vader become a bad guy?" will get your answer one week before the rest of the galaxy on the 17th.
The other day, Bostonist walked by the Loew's theater on Tremont and did a double take. The Dark Side had commandeered the sidewalk and were freaking out little kids. They were there to promote the charity premiere of Episode III to benefit City Year Boston. The movie hits theaters on May 12th in 10 U.S. cities. The costumed folks are part of the 501st New England Garrison part of a Star Wars costuming fan club that currently holds a 2900+ membership. Aside from the pictures above there were Snowtroopers, Sith Lords, and Imperial Guards on the street.
