The newest of Boston's starters salvaged the Red Sox only win in their last five starts as Sunday's game in Pittsburgh went in the visitors favor by a 4-2 score. Andrew Miller (1-0) pitched six innings and allowed two runs on five hits for his first win in a Red Sox uniform. The Red Sox bullpen held the Pirates scoreless for three innings. Alfredo Aceves, Daniel Bard, and Jonathan Papelbon also didn't allow a hit. Paplebon eared his 14th save.
Nearly flawless pitching was necessary as Boston's offense was unproductive once more. They mustered six hits, but benefited from four Pittsburgh errors and two sacrifice flies.

Nothing lasts forever, certainly not an unbeaten NBA season. The Boston Celtics lost for the first time this season on Friday, dropping a 110-103 decision to the Phoenix Suns, who lost their first game on Wednesday. For a close game, the Suns were in control most of the way. The NBA's top two shooting teams didn't disappoint the crowd. The Celtics shot 51.7% from the field. Phoenix finished 13-24, or 54.2%, on three-pointers.
The Celtics are beating good teams by double digits. They're ticking off All-Star opponents. They're 4-0 after dispatching the Hornets last night at the Garden. And most importantly, they seem to have locked up their point guard for a few more years.
Amidst all the sogginess, crankiness, and uncertainty of this weekend's "series" with the Yankees, we're forgetting one silver lining. Scalpers must be getting their butts kicked, after probably paying high prices for tickets that now nobody wants. They surely had visions of hundreds of dollars for a season-ending showdown, little realizing that it would be a messy, rainy matchup of Pawtucket vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre that nobody really wants to go see, and the players probably don't really want to play. But at least tickets will be reasonably priced.
We honestly don't have much new to say about this afternoon's game. Win, and everything's forgotten and it's 0-0 against Cleveland. Lose - the unthinkable - and God only knows how ugly it's going to get in this town. Doc needs to coach like he's NOT being mugged, coaching a playoff game and watching his house burn down at the same time. Pierce needs to be smart and not give the refs a reason/chance to monitor him closely. Sam Cassell needs to play like home Sam and not Road Sam. The fans need to make Atlanta feel as welcome as the Soviets in Lake Placid. And KG needs to step up big and banish the doubters once and for all.
