Attention Stop & Shop shoppers! You can now use your iPhones at Stop & Shop stores at 65 Newport Ave., Quincy; 300 Grove St., Braintree; and 129 Samoset St., Plymouth to scan your groceries. There's an app called Scan It! Mobile that was developed by Modiv Media of Quincy that Stop & Shop will evaluate for 18 months at those three stores. You know the statistic: Each of Boston's four major sports teams has won a championship in the last six years thanks to the Boston Bruins Stanley Cup victory on Wednesday. It's now part of the state's tourism pitch now. Betsy Wall, the executive director of the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism, invited people to the Bay State to experience any of the local teams. Despite evidence that shows the cost of basic food items has decreased recently in Massachusetts, Hub shoppers say they spend more on groceries now. Nationally, 9 out of 10 Americans say they spend more at the grocery store now than in 2010. The Boston Herald's Inflation Watch surveyed the cost of a dozen staples - bread, milk, eggs, chicken and coffee, etc. - at four local supermarkets and found the price dropped $0.96 to $34.98 last month. The sample includes Stop & Shop, Shaw’s and Roche Brothers in Boston and Market Basket in Somerville.
The inflatable rats are on the move, but they aren't heading toward Stop & Shop, as this Bostonist and his entourage feared. As the Globe reported yesterday, Stop & Shop's grocery worker strike was averted when the union and the company came to a last minute deal. Instead, it's Shaw's workers who are striking, a situation that's a lot less inconvenient for us.
The Onion has already brought us a local story in 2010, covering the heartwrenching story of a Somerville cat's brushes with death. Now, the satirical publication brings us a new tale of freezing weather and intrepid bravery.
