. . . she looks at maps and sees people waving! And now, Google Maps brings that same effect to all of us. Bostonist, along with everyone else in the world who likes cool stuff, has told you lots of times about how Google Maps it the hottest thing since Susan Orlean's upstate New York weekend palace. Now we learn that it is even hotter than ever, because a couple new levels of zoom have been added to the satellite view (at least in cities, which is where it matters). Why is this so great? Well, to start with, we're pretty sure we can see our car, since it's pretty much always parked in the same place. We can also see with more vivd detail than ever before a B-line train, people playing basketball, and our old friend, the above-ground central artery. Lamentably, the satellite photos were taken on a day when the Sox were not at home (or maybe playing a night game), but there do appear to be people in the stands and cars in lot at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket. If only we didn't have an actual day job and this blogging to do, Bostonist would spend all day combing the satellite pics for unusual stuff. That said, we'll buy a beer for the first person (of legal drinking age, of course) who can find us a Google Maps picture of a car crash anywhere in the Commonwealth. more ›

When her fancy vacation home is featured in the New York Times, and she's pilloried on Slate.com for having the gumption to show off that home, of course. Susan Orlean, New Yorker regular and a Boston resident since 1982 (and former Globe and Phoenix staffer), lately had her upstate New York weekend pad featured in the Times's impossibly bourgie "House Proud" section (in which people much richer than Bostonist demurely share details about their palatial abodes). OK, whatever - a Boston writer had the good fortune to gain wide acclaim (bringing considerable riches, we imagine) and marry a rich guy to boot - big deal. This would have eluded our notice were it not for the fact that Timothy Noah at Slate thinks there is something terribly untoward about journalists (even softer-side-of, human-interest-book-writin' journalists) showing off their riches. more ›

Touching me, touching youBostonist had a little fling with Neil Diamond this summer, but in her investigation Susan didn’t ask us. After interviewing fans, tour guides and the current Fenway DJ, Megan Kaiser, Bostonist was sure we’d heard the truth to the origins of the Sweet Caroline rendition at Fenway. Alas, we were wrong. The theories about JFK’s daughter, daughters of Fenway Park DJ’s past, and existential explanations the truth came from the originator. Amy, the Fenway DJ before Megan Kaiser took over, put on Sweet Caroline 8 years ago at a game. The crowd loved it. That's it, Amy liked it and Red Sox Nation just happen to like it too. Now Megan plays it every game, eighth inning, and all Bostonist can say is:

sweet Caroline, good times never seem so good (so good, so good, so good...)
