It's been a Fenway fixture for years, but rumors out of RedSoxLand indicate the days when "Sweet Caroline" pumps up Sox crowds in the eighth inning may be over.

We wondered for a bit whether the Brooklyn born Neil Diamond had a problem with the fact that "Sweet Caroline" now has a permanent place in the Boston scene. But when Diamond performed at Fenway Park last year, playing the song three times over the course of the evening, we figured that he'd finally accepted his honorary Bostonian status.
Each week Bostonist brings you the most viral of Boston-based videos. Ah... ahhhh... ahhhhhh...CHOOO!
Above: Kelly Clarkson (or Rachael Ray?) at a Red Sox game with Jill and Kate, who apparently served as her backup singers at some point in time. (More details on the girls.)
Well, Bostonist was thinking Bon Jovi, but Fenway Park delivered something quite different, smooth crooner Neil Diamond.
The feud between Red Sox ownership and Hank "Spaulding Smails" Steinbrenner is escalating. After Hank moaned, "Red Sox Nation? What a bunch of [expletive] that is.", John Henry responded by sending Hank an honorary RSN membership card.
Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline," the song near and dear to any Red Sox fan's heart, always sounded like a love song. Diamond certainly sang it like a love song, and it was easy to imagine a mystery Caroline who made Diamond's blood run hot. Imagine our surprise when Diamond revealed the inspiration behind his classic--an image of Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg. A very young Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg. Diamond said, "It was a picture of a little...
The Boston Globe assembled yet another online photo album that is custom-made for workers to peruse during lunch break. Only this time around, the Globe tackled a touchy subject - "What makes a true Bostonian?" As opposed to what? A false one? And how long do you have to live here to get your credentials? Not to pick on the Globe, but any kind of list such as this is going to have its problems,...
We don't need to tell you what happened. The Red Sox blew the White Sox off the face of the earth, then arrived in New York and started playing like a bunch of corpses. At least yesterday was an afternoon game, so we could do other things with our evening. Amid the carnage, we have to salute Curt Schilling, who pitched pretty well, considering he really looks like he's going on fumes these days. He...
The good news is, they got some hits.
Take us to DEFCON 3. The Red Sox were pasted at Fenway last night. Somehow (we can't explain it), the game seemed closer than the 12-2 final score indicated, but you can't really find a silver lining in a cloud this dark. Curt Schilling and the bullpen kept giving up big hits, and the Red Sox kept not getting big hits, which has become a troubling leitmotif all month long. Two runs a game generally...
The Red Sox are back in action. Fenway Park is only days away from the home opener (and scratch tickets) for the 2006 season. What’s it all mean? Time for some Neil Diamond. It’s the eighth inning and the music comes up, the crowd is engaged, Sweet Caroline comes back for a visit – each and every time. We’re not sure but we think that pretty soon this might take over as the song kids think of when they’re singing songs of Baseball. We know Neil Diamond is cool and we’re going to keep singing along each and every time we hear the song, especially on our next trip to Fenway.
Touching me, touching youBostonist had a little fling with Neil Diamond this summer, but in her investigation Susan didn’t ask us. After interviewing fans, tour guides and the current Fenway DJ, Megan Kaiser, Bostonist was sure we’d heard the truth to the origins of the Sweet Caroline rendition at Fenway. Alas, we were wrong. The theories about JFK’s daughter, daughters of Fenway Park DJ’s past, and existential explanations the truth came from the originator. Amy, the Fenway DJ before Megan Kaiser took over, put on Sweet Caroline 8 years ago at a game. The crowd loved it. That's it, Amy liked it and Red Sox Nation just happen to like it too. Now Megan plays it every game, eighth inning, and all Bostonist can say is:
sweet Caroline, good times never seem so good (so good, so good, so good...)
