Last time we checked in, Boston bands weren't exactly dominating the SXSW music festival. Fortunately, the final list now includes Apollo Sunshine, Arms and Sleepers, Sarah Borges, The Downbeat 5, Melissa Ferrick, Muck and the Mires, Passion Pit, Eli Reed, Eileen Rose, Mean Creek, Tulsa, Westbound Train, Wheat, and Who Shot Hollywood from Massachusetts; Deer Tick, B. Dolan, Howl, The Low Anthem, Jared Paul, and Prolyphic from Rhode Island; plus Pictures and Sound from VT and the Queers from NH. It's a much more robust New England lineup than before.

Or... sorta the opposite of that. There is only one Boston group on the current list of SXSW Showcasing Bands, compared to 10 bands from New York (including Brooklyn) and 10 from Austin. This probably reflects more on the general trend of Bands Must Be From Brooklyn Or Austin Or No One Will Like Them than on the Boston music scene, and hundreds of bands will be added to the festival before March. Still, it might've been nice to see a few more area folks on the bill by now.

2008 wasn't the biggest year ever for Boston music. Our biggest success might have been our oldest, as the New Kids on the Block got back together for a (misogynistic?) record and tour; we called their performance "a polished show infused with moments of giddiness—a lovefest between four guys from Dorchester, one JP product and a screaming hometown crowd." Apollo Sunshine, whose August live show felt like "stumbling upon a drum circle in the field of a music festival," made a couple of best-of lists, as did the Hold Steady, fronted by BC grad Craig Finn. "Bostonians of the Week" Broken River Prophet released an exciting new album that we really dug. Local singer Jess Tardy's work was featured on the TV show Lipstick Jungle. But for the most part, 2008 was just not a Boston-heavy music year.

This week the music world turns its gaze to the party they call SXSW. A number of local bands are hitting the scene in hopes that it will propel them to some worldwide tour – or at least help them get out of that "garden level" apartment in Medford. While some eyes turn south to Texas where an immigration debate runs wild the US immigration policy has taken a toll on the local concert...

This was not a very happy week for the -ist network as one of our own, Phillyist co-editor Star C. Foster, passed away early in the week. Her wit, intelligence, and good nature shone through the site, making Phillyist an immensely fun read. She was loved by many and will be missed by all. Some of the coolest stuff at South By Southwest Interactive takes place after the convention center's shut tight. One of the most interesting things this week was 20x2, an annual get-together where 20 speakers, from all corners of the Web and the tech world, get two minutes each to answer one very open-ended question. This year, "What's The Secret?"

Sure, it doesn't have the glitz or glamour of the Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, Golden Globes, or any of the countless other Hollywood award ceremonies. After all, people who spend their days pecking away at a keyboard may not all be ready for a shindig with tuxedos, red carpets, and Joan Rivers (well, is anyone ready for Rivers? - times two).

The South By Southwest Festival in Austin has three components: Music, Film, and Interactive. And probably nobody navigates their way between these three worlds as well as Henry Rollins. Best known for his musical career (Black Flag, Rollins Band), Rollins has parlayed that into a career as a "jackass of all tirades" - actor, author, corporate speaker, unflinching social critic. He gave a freewheeling, honest talk at a one-on-one interview session with Esquire journalist Andy Langer.
