The Bruins won! Sure, they gave up a 2-0 first-period lead, and they allowed Atlanta to tie the game again, 3-3, in the final minute. But Patrice Bergeron beat Ondrej Pavelec in the shootout to give the B's their first win in like forever.

Sports Redux: Where Are They Now Edition

As we get back into the grind after a holiday weekend, let's catch up with some famous names in Boston sports. There's been so much coming and going and retiring going on as of late, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and uncertain about who is doing what where. Leave it to your friendly neighborhood Bostonist to sort it all out.

Sports Redux: Full-Tilt Edition

With the Sox traveling down to Florida, Tedy Bruschi was given a place squarely in the spotlight on Monday.

A Perfect Player: Bruschi Announces Retirement

Tedy Bruschi, the beloved New England Patriots linebacker who has served as the team's heart and backbone over the course of 13 seasons, announced his retirement from football during a Gillette Stadium press conference a short time ago.

On the outside looking in. After losing two out of three in Texas, the Red Sox are out of the playoff picture for the moment. It's a troubling time. Out batting is ineffective, our pitching (beyond Beckett and Lester) is shaky, and by our unofficial count, the Sox are 2-75 on the road this season. Not counting Baltimore.

- The Bobcats are to the Celtics what the Giants were to the Patriots: confident, strong, capable of making a game of it (although we'd like to think that we won't see Jason Richardson celebrating a championship for at least another couple of years). The Celts barely beat the 'Cats in November, lost (embarrassingly) in January, and were challenged up until the end on Friday night, when Boston won, 108-100, at TD Banknorth Garden.

The Bruins' win over Pittsburgh had a little something for everybody. It had scoring (including two by Marco Sturm), goaltending (Tim Thomas came one shot away from two straight shutouts), fighting (Milan Lucic exchanged pleasantries with Jarkko Ruutu for a good long satisfying while), and most importantly a win, which pulled the scorching-hot B's within four points of the Northeast Division lead. Kevin Paul Dupont analyzes why doing nothing might have been the best move at the trade deadline.

Super Bowl Media Day is the professional football equivalent of the annual family reunion. A bunch of people get together, often traveling long distances, for the purpose of catching up. There's little that they have in common, but since they sort of fall under the same name, everyone has to make nice. The hijinks on display makes for a hilarious time for those not directly involved. People make nice and dumb down the stories of what they do and who they are in order to appease the extended family, and the whole thing would be much more enjoyable for all involved if alcohol was part of the equation. Someone (or, rather, many someones) wind up doing something dumb that seemed like a really good idea at the time, but is really foolish in retrospect.

Never has a matchup between the best team in football and the worst team in football had this much riding on it. The Patriots, as we all know, have clinched the division, home-field advantage, and everything that matters in a typical season. The Miami Dolphins are God-awful, zooming towards the #1 draft pick, and would be in line for a season of historic ineptitude except that the stupid Ravens were worse last week. Should be a gimme, right?

Survivor: China: This week marked the all-important tribal merger, not to mention heaps of shenanigans involving the Immunity Idol. Yet Denise, our beloved Denise, barely spoke. What is with all this drama drama drama and no Denise? Is this a subtle hint that she may have won the whole thing? Since no one is letting Denise talk, we decided to check out her bio over at the official Survivor: China site. She's a badass. She...

Now that the trophy has been shown off and the Duck Boats have moved through Boston's streets, Patriots fans out there are psyched. Baseball's over! Time to devote the sports news hole to the pigskin! Almost. We want to give patient Pats fans their due, so we'll breeze through the baseball news nice and quickly: - There was a victory celebration on Tuesday. Many people attended. - Joe Torre: out of New York, into Los...

The Globe put out a brief little story announcing that some lackey for the New England Patriots football team inserted the wrong DVD into the players' screening equipment on a flight to Cincinnati. That DVD was for the movie The Recruit, which happened to star--but of course!--Tom Brady's babymama Bridget Moynahan. "Someone" (the Globe didn't say who) quickly popped out the movie. We'd like to think some prankster decided to ruffle Brady's feathers a bit...

Tedy Bruschi will be signing books at Brookline Booksmith on Saturday, September 1, at 2:00 pm.

While SFist cringed at the fatal dose of crime littering the Bay Area, it found solace in Hillary Clinton's San Francisco campaign headquarters opening, which featured loads of exposed mammary glands. In other news, SF Taxi Commission ruled that Satan's cab must keep its (in)famous medallion number, 666; and in an un-fashion-forward frenzy, San Francisco Fashion Week (chortle) bars bloggers from covering and getting smashed at their shows and parties, respectively. Also, they found a...

OK, Tedy Bruschi is not dead. Our Redux has it covered. But how on earth did this Bruschi-Is-Dead mess get started?

What a weird night at Jacobs Field on Tuesday - one that proves that no matter how much we can complain about the Red Sox offense over the course of the season, the team has a defense in place to win a 1-0 ballgame. Cleveland's C.C. Sabathia (you might know him as "that really big, scary pitcher for the Indians") limited the Red Sox offense to one run but still managed to walk away with...

After what seemed like a 3 month lay-off, the Patriots were back in action Sunday afternoon, this time facing rival Buffalo in up-state New York to kick around the Bills, 28-6. The Patriots showed no signs of rust on Sunday, coming off their bye week, as they took it to the hometown Bills in front of their home crowd right from the starting gun. The Pats jumped out to an early lead by scoring...

The rumors of the death of the Patriots have been greatly exaggerated. That paraphrase couldn’t be more true to Bostonians after the Pats dismantled the Cincinnati Bengals 38-13, in Cincy (they did not PROTECT THEIR HOUSE; that Under Armour guy would be heated with them), no less.

Early in the third quarter, this one looked like it was about to get really ugly, as the Pats had jumped out to what looked like an insurmountable 24-0 lead over the Jets at the Meadowlands in New Jersey last night. But the Jets made it more than a game, but in the end, Tom Brady and the Patriots were up to the task, winning their 7th consecutive game against the hated Jets. This...

Well well well... reports of the death of the New England Patriots' dynasty were greatly exaggerated. It looks like the champs will have a bit more than a cursory title defense this year, come January, and hopefully, February.

While Tom Brady was hardly the focus of Sunday night's contest, the Patriots were able to overcome a 16-7 4th quarter deficit and rally to overcome the visiting Buffalo Bills 21-16. The minions of "the Krafty one" were able to pull of an inspiring comeback that began with a meager 10:37 remaining in the contest. After a penalty-filled lackluster contest in the first half that ended 3-0 in favor of the visiting Bills, the Pats...

Tedy Bruschi announced yesterday at a press conference that he will be returning to the Patriots' practice tomorrow after getting the okay from numerous doctors. After consulting with many specialists about his physical condition and whether or not he should ever play football again, Bruschi says that he has decided to come back. This past February, #54 suffered from a stroke caused by a small hole in his heart, leaving him blind and unable to even walk. He spent months in rehabiliation and now his doctors assure us that since fixing his heart, he is all set. While he first opted out of playing in the 2005 season, Bruschi has been sitting on the Pats bench watching his team get off to a mediocre 3-3 start this year. Bruschi claims that it's not his team's injuries or playing that is getting back on the field. As quoted in the press conference: ''I'm a football player. Playing the game is the most fun thing about it. There's meetings, practices, and training sessions you have to go through, but playing football and being part of this team - this New England Patriot team - is something I feel really special about. The game. The game is what I missed."

Hi Bostonist,

After bringing home a Superbowl title and a Worlds Series win, Boston sports teams have had an excellent year. As we grow closer to the one-year anniversary of the Reverse of the Curse, Boston sports players have been confusing the hell out of Bostonist this past week. The Patriots training camp started up today with some big gapping holes in their defensive lineup. Last week, Tedy Bruschi decided to opt out of this season...

No way in hell was there going to be a celebration like this without Bostonist being on hand to witness it. By this point, a full day after the celebration and game has gone by and there's nothing that can be said or written that wasn't already put to paper, or typed on a keyboard. For an entire afternoon the masses at Fenway basked in the air of an absolutely perfect day for both reflection, and baseball.

Rumors are swirling regarding Tedy Bruschi's status for next season after suffering a mild stroke and heart surgery. After the much publicized stroke, sources told Bostonist that Bruschi had lost peripheral vision in his left eye. Soon after, Bruschi was back at MGH for surgery to repair a hole in his heart.

The World Champion New England Patriots have lost two players in the past two days. Troy Brown, a wide receiver who has spent all 12 years of his NFL career with the Pats, has not been offered an option year by New England. This now places Brown as a free agent as of yesterday; by not picking up Brown for another year, the team saves $5 million. Brown was an offensive captain for this...

Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi was released from Mass General Hospital yesterday afternoon after what doctors have diagnosed as mild stroke. He was admitted on Wednesday after complaining of headaches, blurred vision, as well as being numb on one side of his body; tests were able to show that he suffered a mild form of a stroke. While the people of Boston are happy to see him healthy enough to walk out of the hospital on...

This Pats favorite is still at Mass General undergoing tests today. Bostonist will keep you posted on any new developments.
