There are few places that will serve you a literal platter of food for under $10, but at Dok Bua, a feast is available every night of the week. Their nightly dinner special offers some of their most popular dishes, served with jasmine rice, tom yum soup, two spring rolls, and two pork dumplings, all for the low price of $9.95. It may not look like a ton of food, especially with the spring......

When Bostonist heard that J.P. Licks’ October flavors include not just predictable seasonal favorites like pumpkin and caramel apple, but also a whole series of Thai-food-inspired ice creams, we had to give them a try. The Thai iced tea had a nice consistency—perhaps from the addition of condensed milk—but it had a milder tea flavor than we hoped for. If you hadn’t told us it was Thai iced tea, we might have mistaken it for......

There was very little else for Londonist to be concerned with when the threat of a Tube strike became a very unpleasant reality. The inconvenience was extreme: there aren't many alternatives to the Tube in London despite the best efforts of the Londonist team to get everyone from A to B. Brighter news came in the form of the first ever female Yeoman Warder, or Beefeater as the position is more commonly known, and......

It's official - Brookline will purge trans fats, which increase bad cholesterol, from all foods made within its restaurants and schools. Per the ban, restaurants must "stop using trans fats for frying by Nov. 30, 2008, and to end their use in baked goods by April 30, 2009." The ban proposal enjoyed overwhelming approval, and, since more and more food products are phasing out trans fats, these bans don't seem that ridiculous after all. "Trans......

Via Universal Hub - Earlier this week, the Herald wrote what they probably intended to be a thoughtful editorial on the stem cell debate. But all that changed once they kicked off the piece with the following sentence: There is a story going around town - one now verging on urban myth - that somewhere in the basement of a Thai restaurant in Allston is a refrigerator that is home to a number of newly......

Jagshemash! Borat is a hit. It's getting rave reviews, grossing millions, and definitely the most quotable thing we've seen in ages. But Borat seems to have missed most of the -ist cities, and we were all wondering how the film would have been different if he'd made his way around the world on the -ist tour. In Shanghai, Borat would be observing Inane Learnings of Penis Photos for Make Benefit Glorious Flat World of......

This has been a rough week for your -ist pals, though you wouldn't know it from the great posts all over the network. Plagued with server problems, our tech team (led by the great Neil Epstein) toiled around the clock to solve the glitches as they arose. Seriously, we've said, typed, and thought the phrase "server problems" more in the past week than we have for the last 35 years combined. Why not say it......

Baby its cold outside. The weather has brought us temperatures that we’re not quite ready to handle. Bostonist doesn’t want to go outside and find our next meal. Sitting in our apartment we’re deciding if we’re going to venture out and sit in a toasty restaurant to dig up dinner or if take out or, better yet, delivery is in our future. Where do we turn? The internets of course. Two new services have made......

Just north on Route 1 in Saugus lays Kowloon Restaurant, a gaudy landmark entertaining people with Asian cuisine for years. Primarily filled with an Polynesian/Easter Island look, Kowloon is best described as eclectic. The front lobby is filled with pictures of past celebrities that have visited Kowloon over the years, most of who are no longer celebrities. Bostonist didn't really pay any mind to that though since we were craving some Chinese food. Luckily Bostonist......

Bostonist got up extra early this morning to tell our dear readers about the many fantastic events happening this evening, but then we turned on the news. Now, we’d really rather just go back to bed for awhile, but here’s a few suggestions that may be close to home, in case you don’t feel like traveling. Over in Allston, at Great Scott, great bands are rocking socks off tonight. The Constantines are teaming up with......

Chinatown has always been a haven for cheap fare. Imported DVDs, CDs, slippers, designer knock-offs, and all kinds of food. One of the best kept secrets: Vietnamese sandwiches (or Banh Mi). Once upon a time Bostonist could go to Lu’s Sandwich shop, formerly Thai Binh) and score a tasty Vietnamese coldcut or beef sandwich for only $2.25, and formerly $2. With the MBTA fare to get there and back it would still be under......
