We received such a great reaction to our Vegan Thanksgiving post we wanted to offer a sweet treat for the Christmas holiday. This Bostonist made these cookies last weekend and they were a big hit - the omission of eggs/milk, etc certainly didn't hurt their taste or consistency...these were gooey and delicious. The addition of chocolate chips makes them just a bit more naughty, but since they're so healthy otherwise you can munch away guilt......

--The Mattapan teenager who was shot in the jaw yesterday has not been named but was a student and basketball player at Charlestown High. Also yesterday, a man was stabbed last night on Cambridge Street, and he is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. --An armed robbery happened at the Au Bon Pain at Harvard Square the night of November 19. Matt Dunning Erin Smith at the Cambridge Chronicle reports that three masked robbers "tied......

--The violence that has plagued the city all last week will not stop. A 17-year-old was shot early this morning in Mattapan, according to the Globe. He was shot in the jaw. And it could have been worse. He was shot in front of his home, where a daycare is located. He hasn't been named, but WCVB is reporting that neighbors said he was a "star athlete." --The DA's Office sent out a release announcing......

The Globe got misty-eyed today over the closing of Liquor Land in Roxbury, which will soon become a CVS. Liquor Land's demise is a plus-minus kind of story. The people who actually live in the neighborhood might be happy at the thought of one less liquor store and the arrival of a pharmacy. Others are saying it's gentrification. Alas, the liquor store's neighbors never get to decide what they want within walking distance, do......

One of the best things about Thanksgiving is the leftovers, no doubt. But this year, Bostonist roasted its own 19 pounder, leaving, oh, about 10 pounds of turkey left over. There are only so many gobbler sandwiches we can stuff into our maw, so we started to look for other ways to make sure we left no bird behind. Turkey pot pie seemed to fit the bill—we could put just about any leftovers in......

In Los Angeles, LAist most definitely celebrated Thanksgiving like no other. After all, one has to keep up all the energy to keep on walking the line at the Writers Strike and fighting the unfortunate return of the wildfires in Malibu, which single handedly destroyed over fifty homes within the first 24 hours. National outlets may be covering the fires, but CNN also found it is easier to buy a gun than fruit and......

The wife of Marquis Barker, the corrections officer who stole a police cruiser and was shot by police Wednesday, wants to know what happened. She said to reporters, "Eighteen years in law enforcement, and this is what he gets? Shot in the head?… Taser the man. Handcuff him, and put him down on the ground. Get him to a medical facility." Evidence discussed so far indicates that Barker's behavior that night is baffling. He had......

Too bad that people can't sleep off their turkey comas after Thanksgiving. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving in which people are encouraged to shop, shop, shop, drives people out of their comfy homes and into the malls. Black Friday divides the holiday crowd into two--those who are disgusted with the consumer culture and those who are willing to get up at ungodly hours for the best deal. If you aren't feeling the deals, boycott......

-- The Mashpee Wampanoag celebrated federal recognition yesterday. "We are not celebrating Thanksgiving," said Shawn Hendricks, president of the tribal council. "It's not one of the better holidays for us. Columbus Day, that's not our top holiday, either." -- The sprinkler law is full of holes. Only 22 Boston bars have installed sprinkler systems. The rest remain as flammable as before. -- Pot advocates gathered 105,000 signatures, enough to get a decriminalization initiative on......

It's not a Thanksgiving story, but it does concern a couple of turkeys. Superior Court Judge Ernest Murphy, who successfully sued the Boston Herald in 2005 for libel, received a recommendation for public reprimand yesterday for "conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice and unbecoming of a judicial officer." The recommendation came from a report prepared by retired judge Peter W. Kilborn. Following his libel suit, Murphy had sent two crazy, handwritten letters, one on......

Organization is everything: Pick up a pill box and the drug store, and count out your Xanax, Ativan, or Valium ahead of time. Determine how many pills you will need for certain situation. Label one box of pills "EMERGENCY." Fill it. You can use that one when your cousin Rooster, who spent a few years in juvie, shows up at festivities looking for money, or when your uncle pats your butt and calls you "pleasingly......

A fried turkey is a delicious turkey because the skin is ever-so-crispy and the flesh is meltingly moist. But Bostonist would like to issue a public-service announcement--turkey-frying is dangerous. You best know your way around propane because 'tis the season for turkey-fry fires. Be sure to take the turkey fryer outside before you start. Essentially, you will be hooking up a vat of oil to a propane tank and dipping a whole turkey into the......

Attention, Cambridge citizens--there is a hungry burglar in your midst, and you should protect your Thanksgiving foodstuffs. Erin Smith reports that a Berkshire Street resident thought a thief broke into his apartment on November 14. The evidence showed that "The burglar ate some leftover Shepherd’s Pie in the refrigerator, but was considerate enough to place the dirty Pyrex pie pan in the sink before leaving, according to police reports. However, the pie thief did forget......

With Thanksgiving and the holiday season approaching, the time has come to focus on travel options. Vamoose buses now offer WiFi access and guaranteed seating, but perhaps it is time to take another look at its oft-maligned competitor, the Fung Wah Bus. Established ten years ago, Fung Wah, which is Cantonese for “magnificent wind,” has gained notoriety for buses slamming into guard rails and getting stuck in a toll booth. But even with these occasional......

For those who will be entertaining vegetarians or vegans this Turkey Day, or for anyone looking for healthier meal options, Bostonist wanted to show that a delicious and animal-friendly feast is easier to prepare than you may think. By substituting plain soymilk for regular milk, and non-dairy margarine for butter, traditional dishes such as mashed potatoes can be made easily vegan. Oh, and if you don't tell your guests you made the switch we......

No Christmas shopping today. No Thanksgiving shopping, either. Get your remote control warmed up and tell the family they're on their own for dinner, because there's a lot of sports to be watchin' today. The fun starts at 2:00, when the Revolution try to get from "happy to be in the championship game", which is old hat, to actually winning the thing. They're matched up against Houston for all the marbles again; goalie Matt Reis......

Creamed onions are a Thanksgiving favorite at Bostonist’s house (except for the year we accidentally bought cocktail onions instead of boiled onions—bygones). So when we saw a recipe for gratinéed mustard creamed onions in this month’s Gourmet, we thought we’d do a side-by-side comparison of Grandma’s way (below) versus Gourmet (left). In the end, Gourmet’s onions were a bigger hit than our usual onions. The onions were bigger and firmer than the usual bottled......

Oldies station WODS (103.3 FM) is already playing holiday music. Laurel Sweet at the Herald wrote, "Admit it: You love it." No, we do not love it! At least it's easy to turn the FM dial away from the Trans-Siberan Orchestra's "What Is Christmas?" But what about the sudden appearance of Starbucks holiday cups? And what about Rachael Ray's uber-perky Dunkies ad? Amy at Boston Daily is already feeling irritated by Ray's self-proclaimed "million pounds"......

Halloween's over, Thanksgiving's not for a few weeks, and you don't even want to think about Christmas shopping yet (even though the store displays are already urging you to). So what's a Bostonian to do for the first 2/3rds of November? Easy: grow a moustache. For those not in the know, November is now officially Movember, a time for shaving one's face clean on the first of the month and growing the most glorious moustache......

Bostonist's Turkey Correspondent sent us the following photo indicating that the turkeys are moving close to home--right on his doorstep, actually. It's one thing to see a turkey on your Thanksgiving table, but quite another to see one at your front door. Maybe the turkeys are growing bolder in the face of the media glare. Various outlets have caught turkey fever, and the turkeys are lapping up the attention like a celebutante. But who wants......

If what they say is true, and Curt Schilling truly pitched his last game as a member of the Boston Red Sox last night... Let there be no mistake. The dividing line between the Sox' Era of Perpetual Failure and the current Golden Years can easily be geotagged; it's somewhere between Theo Epstein's Thanksgiving dinner in Arizona and the first time Curt posted on the SOSH message board. Somewhere in that stretch, the Red Sox......

Turkeys have been terrorizing Brookline for some time, but a Bostonist reader happened to catch one in the act, just waiting to strike on Washington Square. In September, the other BPD, the Brookline Police Department, warned residents about turkey trouble and what to do in case you are faced with the kind of wild turkey that doesn't come in a bottle. Our favorite tip from them is "Don’t let turkeys intimidate you — Don’t......

We’ve long been fans of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, enough so that we’ve got two nicknames for it – ISGM when writing and “da gadnah” when speaking. The museum has been doing a lot in recent months to re-energize their image, though they’ll never lose sight of their founder (and Red Sox fanatic) Isabella, new programs are putting a new life into ISGM. Tonight marks the first in their new series, Gardner After Hours,......

Caldor, Bradlees, Ames, and Zayres - bygone discount department stores which elicit fond childhood memories of shopping with grandma and an occasional ride on the quarter op machines sitting out front.
