We’ve always had this weird love/hate relationship with instrumental music and the bands who play it. One the one hand, instrumentals are transcendentally personal, evoking a different image or concept in every listener. What’s sad to one person might be peaceful to another. There’s no singer telling us exactly what the piece is about. Also, instrumentals require a certain technical mastery on the part of the musicians that songs with vocalists can slide on, less than perfect chops can be covered up by a good singer.

Cat Power will be at the Orpheum. Last time Bostonist saw her, she seemed a little plowed and, with her dark glasses, she resembled country singer Ronnie Milsap. Since then, she's been hanging out with Karl Lagerfeld. She's different every time, but the music is always memorable. 7:30 pm.

Tuesday was supposed to be a glorious day. A crowd was to stand in the rain, braving the elements to cheer for the football heroes ambling down roads lined in blue and red. And after the last bits of confetti were cleaned up, the celebratory mass of people would tune in to cheer for their basketball team's winning ways.

Super Bowl Media Day is the professional football equivalent of the annual family reunion. A bunch of people get together, often traveling long distances, for the purpose of catching up. There's little that they have in common, but since they sort of fall under the same name, everyone has to make nice. The hijinks on display makes for a hilarious time for those not directly involved. People make nice and dumb down the stories of what they do and who they are in order to appease the extended family, and the whole thing would be much more enjoyable for all involved if alcohol was part of the equation. Someone (or, rather, many someones) wind up doing something dumb that seemed like a really good idea at the time, but is really foolish in retrospect.

--In a show rescheduled from September, Blonde Redhead will provide art-damage rock, and maybe some literal damage. Really. The last time Bostonist saw this band, they were crashing into each other onstage. DCist spoke to Kazu Makino about their album's name (23) and a few other things. The Track Girls are spreading the word from Us Magazine that Katie Holmes has received a special exemption to run this year's Boston Marathon, which will be on April 21.

--The Boston Police Department and the DA's Office are investigating the death of an inmate at the Suffolk County House of Correction. 41-year-old Darryl Lee Leslie died on New Year's Eve while being moved to maximum security because he was, according to a jail spokesman, "planning a violent attack." All right. Let's dispense with the false modesty and ersatz humility. The Boston sports scene was AWESOME in 2007. So many great moments, and so many great stretches that can't be summed up in a single moment. How do you make a top-ten list of near perfection? Well, we tried.

Continuing our list of list series, Bostonist slugged through all the best and worst of lists for the albums of 2007.

Let's be honest. We've long known that Boston is at least on the short list for Sports City of the United States. The passion felt by Boston sports fans has long been either heralded or chastised, depending on your point of view. But if you'd told us at the dawn of 2007 that we were entering one of the best years Boston sports teams and fans would ever experience, we would have laughed. Long. Hard. With some bitter remarks about a couple of our teams.

Bostonist finds that food makes a great gift for even the most difficult to shop for. Some of our favorite local food purveyors have made it easy for us with food-of-the-month clubs. We’d be thrilled to receive the gift of pork from Savenor’s, which has a bacon-of-the-month club. For something sweet, Pemberton Farms of Cambridge has a coffee-cake-of-the-month club and plenty of locally themed gift baskets. Formaggio Kitchen, famous for having its own cheese cave, has a cheese-of-the-month club. If that’s too pricey, we recommend just stopping in at either their Cambridge or South End location, and picking out a few choice items yourself. For your tea-loving grannie, a gift set from Tea Luxe might be a good idea (the $19.95 “Christmas mailbox” gift set caught our eye: it comes with a glass mug, mesh tea ball, jar of sugar cubes, and 100 grams of gingerbread tea).

--King Downing, the ACLU coordinator for the Campaign Against Racial Profiling, won his case against the Massachusetts Port Authority and the State Police. He sued because he felt that he was illegally detained at Logan Airport in 2003, and a jury agreed with him.
