Mistakenly regarded as a Pixies spin-off band, the Breeders have always been an entity to themselves. Sure, the band is helmed by Pixies bassist Kim Deal started the Breeders with (Throwing Muse) Tanya Donelly when the Pixies were in a tailspin and headed for a breakup way back in the early '90s. The Breeders released the excellent Pod (still a fave of ours and Kurt Cobain's) in 1990 and followed it with their platinum album, Last Splash in '93 - but they have consistently released excellent music since their inception.

FNX has been on a roll lately, hosting two of the biggest indie bands on the scene right now, Band of Horses and Vampire Weekend. Both bands have a reputation for appealing to a hipster crowd, and while tight jeans, ironic T-shirts, and beards (oh-so many beards) were indeed prevalent at both shows, the main focus has been on the unique sound of both acts.
Bostonist didn't suspect at the time that Rhett Miller's Saturday show would be the weekend's high point, but it would have been a night well spent despite whatever happened on Sunday. The Old 97s gained national attention around the time of the "No Depression" Americana/alt-country scene, which was spearheaded by Uncle Tupelo and which also launched the career of Ryan Adams in Whiskeytown. Hailing from Dallas, Old 97s definitely have a helping of twang in their rock; but they straddle folk, country, cow-punk, and power-pop.
--In a show rescheduled from September, Blonde Redhead will provide art-damage rock, and maybe some literal damage. Really. The last time Bostonist saw this band, they were crashing into each other onstage. DCist spoke to Kazu Makino about their album's name (23) and a few other things. Rodfest is held each year to support the Greg "Rodney" Moynahan Memorial Scholarship. Moynahan, a musician who used to host "Rodfests" to celebrate his birthday, died in a car crash in 2004. Kier Byrnes, Moynahan's cousin and a member of Three Day Threshold, has continued the "Rodfest" tradition, and the money goes to Moynahan's alma mater, Stonehill College. Bands this year include Three Day Threshold, Girls Guns & Glory, Rogue Heroes, Cassavetes, and the Bowen Street Band. The Paradise, 8:00 pm.

Exploit Boston has toyed with the format of Game Night they began collecting games to play. It was in Ball Square for a little while, The Paradise Lounge on occasion, then camped out at Common Ground in Allston for a while. But the Common Ground just didn't seem to be the right fit for Game Night. So Sooz ventured out down Harvard Ave and found a new soul for the more-or-less monthly get together. Tonight the games will be played at Soul Fire at 182 Harvard Ave in Allston (b-line and 66 bus accessible) for the second month in a row (and it could be the new home). Last month was a full house in the new venue.
