Oh, you know the Oscar drill already: Marion Cotillard surprised everyone by winning Best Actress for La Vie en Rose, further proving the rule that if you go ugly for a movie role, you will win. Poor Julie Christie just looked too beautiful. Otherwise, Tilda Swinton delivered the best speech for winning Best Supporting Actress for Michael Clayton. The men's races were yawners. Of course, Javier Bardem won Best Supporting Actor for No Country for Old Men, and Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor for There Will Be Blood. No Country for Old Men was picture of the year. This Bostonist finally got around to seeing There Will Be Blood last night, so we're prepared to concede that the West can be a harsh and pitiless place. Until this week, the West had been very good to the Celtics.
">The Bucket List won this weekend's box office.
Bostonist heard the hype about There Will Be Blood, but we didn't really believe it until we saw it for ourselves. We expected it to be just another violent, manly epic about the American west and dreams of success. And then... we saw it. In a post-cinematic fit of confused depression, which didn't cease without the help of several beers, we realized: this is the best damn film we've seen in years. Not because of the blood, not because of the violence, but because of its basic truths about human nature, and the way it speaks strongly to current events. There Will Be Blood says a lot about America--both how it is, how it has been, and how we can affect how it could be--and is a definite must-see for 2008. More about this remarkable film after the jump.
Nicolas Cage mopped up the competition this weekend with the National Treasure sequel, which looked a lot like a remake of the first one. It's basically expensive kids' movie stuff. However, a friend of ours who paid to see it pointed out that those who like the ladies will see a lot of Diane Kruger in skimpy, damp clothes.
As Bostonist did with books, we've tackled best of/worst of lists for movies. Not only are we including the latest best of/worst of lists, but we dug through each list to find which movies impressed every single critic and which ones were absolutely appalling.
