  • Tim Cahill doesn't want to be a Senator. He wants to be Governor, though. [Boston Globe]
  • John McCain can't vote in our special election to replace Senator Kennedy. That fact didn't stop him from butting into the Bay State's business by tying to get Curt Schilling to run. [CNN]

Looney Pike Lawsuit a Loser, No Comment from Cahill

The looney lawsuit brought against the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority by celebrity lawyer Jan R. Schlichtmann no longer looks so promising after a Superior Court Justice denied, in no uncertain terms, the plaintiffs' motion for an injunction against the Pike. Justice H. J. Smith, Jr. wrote, "At this juncture, the court finds that the plaintiffs have not demonstrated that they are likely to prevail on the merits of their contention that the MTA's tolls are unconstitutional taxes." (Hat tip to BlueMassGroup for hosting the order.)

State Treasurer Tim Cahill is leaving the Democratic party, step number one on the way to a possible gubernatorial run next year. Cahill's excuse for the transition is an opposition to tax and spend policy, something you'd think he might have objected to a while ago as, y'know, treasurer. Cahill had previously claimed he would run as a Democrat if he ran for governor, which already instills confidence in his integrity and ability to keep promises.

In part due to gas tax anger and folks bristling over his appointments of personal friends like Marian Walsh, Deval Patrick's approval ratings are heading to the toilet. If a gubernatorial (love that word!) election were held today, 35% would vote for Tim Cahill (though the state treasurer hasn't even officially declared a campaign) and 30% for Patrick. These numbers are from a poll conducted by Suffolk University, which also found that 47% of respondents felt it was time for a glowing new governor. Patrick's approval is pretty split, with 43% assessing him unfavorably and 44% favorably. The Phoenix is mostly okay with Patrick's policy, but criticizes his political skills (or lack thereof), particularly his willingness to snub the media.

Got the feeling, power steering, Pistons popping, aint no stopping now! Panama, panama Panama, panama Now that the movie Superbad has revived Van Halen's song "Panama," it might be appropriate for Mayor Menino to upload the track to his iPod for his upcoming trip to Central America. The Mayor has managed to finagle his way into a trip with Carlos Gutierrez, the nation's secretary of commerce, to explore business opportunities in the region. He will...

Massachusetts State Treasurer Tim Cahill thinks he got a raw deal from customs officials at Logan when his family returned to the country from a trip to Italy. Customs was not amused when they found Cahill's daughter with three peaches, and these three little peaches have grown into a large dispute. Cahill told the media, "If this is the way the federal government treats people when they come into this country, it’s distressing." Has this...

Massachusetts loves the Lottery - and the Red Sox. The two will now live together in scratch ticket form. Sales of the Red Sox branded $5 instant win tickets begin on April 11, 2006, the same day as the home opener at Fenway. The $2 games are about as high as Bostonist will reach when dropping some cash on a lottery ticket, but we may be alone in this. Back in January we remember reading about a report by Christiansen Capital Advisors Massachusetts, which quantified the love for the Lottery - residents spend an average of $681 per person yearly on lottery games, ahead of every other state by some $250. Keno and scratch tickets lead lottery sales in 2005 and with the introduction of a Red Sox branded ticket it’s certain the Commonwealth is hoping for some increased revenues.
