-- The staff at a Roxbury Head Start program found 17 bags of crack cocaine in the shoe of a 3-year old girl on Monday. The father of the girl's infant sibling reportedly confessed the crack was his. The girl allegedly told police, "My mommy put it in my shoes and said it was candy.'' The suspect pleaded not guilty to child endangerment and drug trafficking charges and was held $2,000 cash bail. This week's latest episode of Project Runway started off with one of those "judge not, lest ye be judged" moments, wherein the fashion-designin' contestants got to pick their own models. Some chose to stay with the models they'd worked with for weeks, while others dissed their old clotheshorses in favor of greener pastures. In contrast to last week's episode, which required designers to create looks for women who'd lost lots of weight, this week had the contestants create outfits from items they snagged from the Hershey's Store in Times Square. Instead of a budget, the contestants got time--five minutes to grab as much candy-related crap as possible to use to make a gorgeous garment. We've been resisting the temptation to make a remark about the sweet character of this challenge, but the owner of the Reese's store took care of that for us by telling the PR contestants to "have a sweet day" when they left. It was almost too much!
The cold weather - and holiday festivities - descended upon Gothamist. The Rockefeller Christmas tree was lit, Broadway stagehand finally ended their strike, and NASCAR decided to run their victory lap through Times Square. There were disturbing photographs revealing the working conditions in which many city manholes are produced and ninjas were also a hot topic, either robbing homes or entering into alibis. But the city was really rocked by how Rudy Giuliani's visits...
Between fake terrorist alerts and scandals big and small, this just might be the Best Best of the -ists ever. We're exhausted just thinking about it. First up, SFist, who saw their little 'ole site be the center of what was a nice little scandal (even getting their editor on TV) only to find their scandal dwarfed by the even bigger scandal caused by their Mayor boffing one of his aides' wife. We're not...
Not feeling up for First Nighting? Unable to get to New York City to watch the ball drop in person? As usual, the TV networks are more than willing to provide you with the kind of entertainment that will drive you to drink. Here's the lineup: WGBH 2 (PBS): Garrison Keillor's New Year's Eve Special. 10 pm. This one's for those of you who are feeling civilized. WBZ 4 (CBS): Local First Night Special. The...
Halloween is Tuesday, which means this weekend is really the time for all of the –ists to celebrate. And whether they’re designing super-spooky costumes or talking about the super-spooky upcoming elections, we’d say that they’re doing a fine job of it.
Since it was introduced in 1935, Parker Brothers' Monopoly has delighted all those broke folks out there hoping that one day they could own Park Place (with hotels even). For those of us in 2006, we still dream of someday being able to afford any sort of real estate in the Boston area, so we turn to board games to make our fantasies a reality. In honor of Monopoly's 70th birthday, Parker Brothers is launching...
Houstonist reports on cross-dressing thieves and undressing educators this week. A Peeping Tom defends himself with a papaya and an outraged onlooker asks Ken Lay, "TATER TOTS OR FRIES?" Also, FEMA wants its money back.
Gothamist got us hooked on watching time-lapse videos on the Internets. The blinking lights, hordes of tourists, and just people with somewhere to go making their way through Times Square is a good watch, time-lapse or not. The best Boston time-lapse we found comes from vimeo user Dan Linfield and features a look from MIT across the Charles to Boston. You can catch the Pru on the left, off to the right the lights at Fenway inexplicably go on for the night, but after dusk, even when there is snow on the ground. Bostonist would like to see this video with a soundtrack - suggestions?
Ding dong the wicked Dawn is gone on The Apprentice: Martha Stewart this past week. After dodging a firing each week in the Conference Room with Martha, Dawn was given the boot after her team lost yet another challenge. This week, the kids had to create a "lifestyle suite" at the Westin Hotel in Times Square. Dawn chose not to join her Matchstick teammates with painting the suite through the night and to top things off, she overslept the next morning. Martha did not think Dawn was "a good thing" and she wrote her this ever touching goodbye letter.
