An Illinois man was arrested by State Troopers at Logan Airport at a Southwest Airlines security checkpoint last night for making a false bomb threat and disorderly conduct. Joseph Haynes, a 22-year old from Chicago, allegedly threatened TSA workers by claiming he had an AK-47 machine gun and hand grenades in his checked luggage. The Massachusetts State Police, including canine and bomb units, searched his checked bags and found no firearms or explosives in either. Police closed the checkpoint for almost 20 minutes as police investigated. A woman accompanying Haynes on Southwest Airlines Flight 3627 to Chicago was not charged. more ›

A pasesenger on Delta Airlines Flight 1922 from Detroit to Boston is now a guest of the State police after impersonating a federal air marshal. There happened to be an actual federal air marshal on board to secure the suspect. Ann Davis of the TSA said the impersonator was trying to impress another passenger by claiming to be a federal air marshal. She said he was detained on board by an actual federal air marshal. Logan Airport spokesman Phil Orlandella said the detainee is not a terrorist and is currently undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. [Herald], [WCVB] more ›

It's a typical busy pre-Thanksgiving travel day at Logan International Airport as the 100,000+ travelers were avoiding National Opt-Out Day's planned civil disobedience. Ever since JunkGate, there's been a growing sense of outrage over digital body scans and physical pat downs used as airport security measures by the TSA. Today was declared National Opt-Out Day by groups upset over the security measures, and travelers were encouraged to refuse to use the scanners more ›

Over 30 Brazilian nationals, allegedly in the country illegally, have been arrested since July in connection with an investigation into the TJ Aviation Flight Academy at Stow's Minute Man Air Field. This case could expose flaws in the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) procedures designed to ensure only “properly checked, legal aliens" are permitted to take flight lessons. Scrutiny increased on flight schools after the government learned several 9/11 hijackers took flight training in the United States. One person arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)was the school’s owner, Thiago DeJesus, a 26-year-old Brazilian immigrant. He told the Boston Globe he's here legally but didn't show proof of residency. He's been giving flying lessons since his arrest this week. "You think if we did something wrong, we’d still be open as a flight school?," he asked. more ›

-- Sean Shanahan, a TSA employee whose responsibilities include patting down airline passengers, was arrested yesterday on multiple charges of sex crimes against a minor, including statutory rape. The 44-year-old Winthrop man is sure to become the poster boy for privacy advocates who oppose the TSA's full-body scanners. The alleged victim, a 14-year-old girl, was reportedly a friend of Shanahan's daughter who would spend the night at their house, giving Shanahan the opportunity for the alleged rapes. Lexington native and Harvard alumna Nancy Kates had to take off her underwire bra to get through airport security on her way from Oakland to Boston on Sunday. Kates wouldn't submit to a physical search, choosing instead to remove her bra to get through the security checkpoint. Bostonist has never had a big problem with underwires at the airport, but now we're getting a little nervous about our next trip. Still, we can't imagine Kates is the only woman ever to wear an underwire to security--just one of the few to make a splash about not getting through the metal detector. Consumerist would like to see more bra removal at airports, so wear an underwire if you'd like to entertain the Gawker network (and who wouldn't?). more ›

The Globe reports that Jason Robo, a Humboldt State student from Worcester, slapped a "911 was an inside job" sticker on an airline restroom, then fled, leaving another Alex Jones' Prison Planet sticker on his seat and causing a 3-hour delay for Salt Lake City passengers. The flyers who didn't flee were taken from the plane and made to wait while it was searched thoroughly by bomb-sniffing dogs. The flight eventually left three hours behind schedule. more ›
